I am surprised that lot of people could not appreciate the BGM of Hey Ram. It is one of the best scores of Raja. Flooded with brand new ideas.
Good effort by Shankar in quoting some of the scenes.
I rented the movie and watched some of the scenes over and over again, just for the BGM.
Can not wait to own the DVD of this movie.

one of memorable scenes in hey ram: when kamal gets back to calcutta and aparna looks through the peep-hole, there is a marvellous playful bgm for about 15sec; the piece includes, if i remember correctly, a string section, a playful flute, percussion (watch out for the triangle)... wow!

I have a question regarding "nee paarththa paarvaikku". After the inquisitive ranis' "what is kozuk mozuk ?", kamal sings the prelude of the song - I mean just the prelude (without any music) and invited her for.... (I cannot get into "details" as this posting will be declared indecent !) As per the news, IR joined the venture later. If Kamal had used live recording and IR tuned the songs for the picturization, was the tune composed by L.Subramanian originally ? Also the bengali poem recital by rani must have found a place earlier. So, IMO,the prelude was originally composed by LS and the song was extended by IR with proper orchestration ? Is this correct ?

Paamaran,
Thanks for the link.
I'm sure Raja's going to do full justice to Bharati's poetry.

MS,
They just show kamal running up and down singing "something" (in the movie it comes as "la..la..lala...la..la..lala...la..laa..lala..laaaaaaa ") . U can't make out whether he's singing the same tune or not.
I still feel it's a genuine Raja tune...

The "la..la.lala" is THE prelude of the song in piano. To me it appears that LS had earlier composed the prelude. The song had then been built from the prelude by IR.

MS,
I think u r missing my point. They show kamal singing "some" tune...not necessarily the one composed by Raja.
and Kamal has said Aparna's theme was composed by Raja. Why wud he say that if it were not Raja's tune and why would LS keep his mouth shut had his tune been used by Kamal without giving him the credit???

Regarding "Friends", it doesn't matter if he uses the same tunes that he used for the original malayalam movie or he composes new tunes. I just feel he should give something that has his stamp and also that it should be well appreciated by most of the audience (like KM or KK did, I mean it should raise curiosity among wide audience), if not all. I feel bad that many of his good tunes like Niram Pirithu, Thena Odum, etc, goes unnoticed. Basically IR should decide which will go well with the audience, at the same time do not compromise with his stamp. I know its tough, but IR has done earlier and I am very confident that he can do it. Ofcourse marketing comes into picture. On top all, recording should be very good. Lets hope for the best to come.
Enjoy your day !!!

ippO slightaa puriyuthu. Do you mean to say that the tune that kamal sang in the movie was "arbitrary" ? Raja heard it and then then built a whole song out of it ? In which case the humming was kamal's own ? (if you think I am "bulb"ing, explain)

MS,
You are right. The tune which Kamal hums is the
same as "Nee Paartha". But my guess is that he
could have dubbed it. Its a misnomer that Heyram
is 100% live sound. The scene where Delhi Ganesh
appears is dubbed in the Hindi version. Its not
his orginal voice.
There has been some patch work but majoriy seems
to be live sound.

hi,
Neepartha...is an agmark raja's tune,
I can prove this by the chord progression,
basically it starts with a 9th sus chord,.
eg :scale in c
(c+d+d# and +g)
Raja has use this chord before in Ilamai idho idho -- (no one uses this chord in tfm execpt raja, till date) this chord is played when kamals jumps around with a stationary moterbike!...:) ...also score movements are like Oh butterfly, so I also feel kamal might have overdubbed this tune!,

on: Mon Apr 3 16:02:36 EDT 2000
MS,
besides srikanth technical detail, here is another eveidence to show that it's authentic ir theme. kamal plays the theme (camera shows only his right hand) and there is a short pause (visually) and then repeats it; but, ir fills in the pause with more notes. this appears even before kamal hums the song. (i was slightly disappointed to notice that IR missed out on this, but hey, we got a fabulous song! :-) )

thats right, Srikant, however musically ignorant I am, I could tell some commonality with 'Oh butterfly. It seemed familiar but it didnt strike me until you pointed out.

Srikanth,
You are absolutely right.
The chord (c d d# g) called C minor (add 9) is favorite chord of Raja.

folks......I saw sethu ysy......I was stunned to hear mottai in full flow....tooooooooooo much..........I have never ever heard a better BGM...it was absolutely amazing......................esp the music when vikram and abita meet...more then that the second half of the film....only the BGM speaks.....infact the second half didn't have dialogues at all......guys did you notice that the last 15 mins of the film doesnot have a single proper dialogue ........ayyyyyyyyyyyooooooooooooo......kadalvulae...how can a human being create like this.....
Can someone review the BGM of sethu alone separately..........I would be really grateful......also can someone upload the 2 bit songs in the movie...the one when abita accepts sethu's proposal and the climax song sung by raaaaja.......both of them was abso marvellous.....
I just cant beleive how a man who is almost thrice my age.........I dont know what to say.......I simply love this guy......

Thx a lot folks for your help. I have a confession to make :-) I must admit that the panning I cast on Sethu is fully not substantiated. I recently watched the film Sethu and I have just one word for IR and the music in this film - "wonderful" ! The songs which sounded banal before watching the film, seem to suit every situation perfectly ! The BGM for the movie is just awesome. Especially the one which accompanies the muted proposal of Vikram to Jenisha in the library is just lovely. The song "maalai en vEthanai" has literally had a great impact on me.
For once, I take back my statements about the film which I had said earlier. (But, I do stand by my opinion that "sikkaatha sittondru"'s opening lines are indeed similar to the "khaamoshi" song - sounds like galileo's retreat, eh ? sorry :-))
