As far as i am concerned raaja is the best composer i have ever heard not just because of his film tunes but because of his re-recording.
have any of you heard the background score of "nenjathai killathe"(dir by mahendran).A scintillating composing in early 80's.quite amazing isn't it.he is the first one who introduced theme music.first one who used acoustical drums(mad mad fugue in "how to name it").there is a vast difference between a music director and composer.a music director just combines all the existing music but a composer
creates music which is unique and original.
that's what he is!!!.if he had born in any other country other than india he'd have been called as the fourth giant(after mozart,j.s.bach,beethoven)
some of you question about his swiftness in composing music.anybody can compose music if they sit for two days even t.rajendar can, so it is not wise to comment about his swiftness.
i am still worried about his symphony no 1 but
eventually it 'll be released may be after his period.
he is the only one who can write music without any
further improvisation which i bet nobody can.
even beethoven's symphony has many errors in it's notes.
he is a genius in music and he has nothing to prove to others that he is a genius.look at the composing of "kalapani".especially the trailor of that film.he should have been given national award but unfortunately he was not which reveals
our standard of understanding music.
when illayaraja was at his peak no music directors could survive but now when there is so much of competion he is still getting prestigious projects like "pithamagan","bharathi","hey ram".
he is a person beyond criticism cause he is an eternal composer which exceptional talents.

NAVIN, the point is a lot of the compositions are wasted on stupid films and songs sung by stupid singers (Mano, Hellllo) and not just that stupid fellows write stupid reviews, stupid audience can't enjoy and they make IR stupid in the end. and a good listener like me is converted to stupidism

sorry fellas!!!!!!!!!
i posted my response twice...
i am new to this fan club thing.
i know nothing about music, but i enjoy music of every kind.
i love mozart,beethoeven,bach,yani,antonin dvorak
fredric chopin and every one.
but the fact that i am obsessed with raaja's music
is not just because heis a world class composer
but because of his intellectual character.
i don't know about raga's but i enjoy them because of raaja.(nee pournami in "oruvar vazhum aalayam" which i enjoyed hearing recently)
i am not impressed with his music when he started
it in annakili.
what made me a crazy fan then?
Inthe 80's when he transferred his idea into western music,i simply accepted him as my godfather.
remember the guitarpiece in 'moodu pani'.
guitar conclusion in "payanangal mudivathilai"
score of "uthiripookal"
score of "moondram pirai"
discothential style in "ilamai idho"
andin "thanga magan"
have any one noticed of the score in "kadalukku
mariyadai" especially inthe climax scene.
(when shalini brings coffee to everyone)
score of "bharathi" when the poet reads the poem of P.b.shelly.
score of "azhagi"
score of "devadhai"(it's a stupid movie all right)
score of "house full","sethu","hey ram".
the no.2 in "nothing but wind"(mozart i love you)
i think that's a type of "waltz"
score of "kalapani","guna","thalapathi".
guitar piece in "valli"(dingu dongu)
i just want to make it clear to everyone that
raaja did not waste his time composing music
for stupid movies,it's those movies that brought
him the name "maestro" and an invincible image
in the heart of millions of fans.
take care everyone

A bloody review in this page. Is Illayaraja basically a musician? No, his luck only make all his fortunes. If Rahman was in 80's, No Illayaraja could even exist. Dont blow empty trumpets here after!!
Always admire the good thing bloodies.

Hey Shahul you are right,
Illayaraja reign is the blackout period of Tamil Music. After Rahman and Deva only , the whole Indian Cinema admired and respected Tamil Music

Dude: Ilayaraja was at his peak when ARR came into the industry. After ARR came, Ilayaraja started going into oblivion. Everyone knows that.
Heyram, bharathi, pithamagan... man these are albums which came years apart. If he is so good, why isnt he doing more albums? After all, he used to dish out around 20 albums a year right. What happened today? Is he looking only for prestigious projects these days? Bull!!! Most directors dont want his music thats why.
He composes the music for a film within 30 minutes. Yeah thats great!!! But out of that 5 songs, one song is very good, one song is mediocre and others are utter crap. For ex. the movie Sethu. Malai En Vedhanai and Enge
Like this he goes on to compose more than 750 movies. Only a handful of movies are there in which all songs are a hit.

Shahul,
who is Illayaraja????? we r unaware of such a person here in tamil nadu. BTW wasnt Rahman the great musician who introduced music in films. before him all movies were made without any music.

frm a list of 63 movies so far composed by ARR.the songs in other 26 movies were average hits.
While IRs history suggests only 750+ films and except his first movie annakili none of his albums were hits. but people dunno how come he composed for 750+ movies. there r rumours that he gets chance frm film producers promising not to charge any money for his compositions. as he is struggling hard and desperate for a hit he has attempted at this extrodianry feat of composing for 25+ long years and 750+ movies.

RS:
Add the BGM's what crap was that, HTNI, NBW were done by Sabesh, Murali and Deva and that totally revived the TFM. RPH mistook IR to be ARR and asked him to compose the Symphony, Since IR was so ashamed of releasing somebody else's music, he decided to keep it in his shelves as a priced possession.
IR had no talent or any music knowledge, he just gave money to the Guitar exam person and passed, he did Air-Guital, after ARR came as additional programmer, IR copied the Music, and were modified by ARR to become the gr8est hits, The only thing is If ARR came in 80's TFM would have become WFM, which is recognizing Tamizh all over the world. Shame on IR for making Tamizh music for Tamizh first and then for the world.
