Naveen,it sounds like loy...i have heard him play few times in madras, it might have been his idea but still arr should have authorized this, 70% blame goes to arrbelive it or not
Also frankly this is the first piece i am hearing a 100% verbatim lift by arr.
...Yanaikum Adi sarukum....is very true.:))

Srikanth,
Thanks for the info. The way Loy has played is really good. He must be a Good Jazz Pianist.

arun,
bingo! man. i have already said that before in this forum and i could'nt just prove it like u said because though i had the original i could'nt upload it. 'love of common people' (original version) by paul young starts off with an impressive percussion piece which has been used in 'akaadannu naanag' in indian and the same piece again in 'malargale malargale'. in fact it sounds quite awkward in malargale song. the song starts off melodiously and suddenly this percussion piece is fit into the song. it looks quite abrupt.
iam also trying to confirm another things arun. in case u have listened to this song 'puttin on the ritz' by Taco(u can find it quite easily in FTP servers) just listen to the opening lines of this song. the notes sound so similiar to 'july maadham vandhaal' prelude which is in guitar. iam going to check it out once again.

Digression:
arun, do u lsiten to 80s pop a lot? if so there is a song called 'one night in bangkok" by Murray head. deva has copied 2 different instrumental pieces from that song and used it in 2 different songs of his own. in one of the songs he has merged it with another piece from gupt;))
u can go to copied songs thread for this info.
i wish i had been a music director! big bucks, without a sweat;))
can deva be sued by an US artist if he comes to know that his song has been copied? will it be under US laws or india's? iam seriously considering whether we should form a gropu and try to dome some justice by informing the concerned artistes on how their work is being financially exploited.

Srikanth, et al,
Instead of sending the e-mail or evidence to ARR (or other copy cats) why not send the duplicate to the original creator (together with a nice-bio on 'achievements' like impending projects with ALWebber, Padmashree etc.) nannaa maattindaa thaan ivaaLukkellaam soodu soraNai irukkaa nu theriyum.
Srikanth/Arun: In the interest of genuine music, could you please follow up. Maybe we can send the message from MD -> Director -> Producer that Films should be a platform for creative art/culture and there are serious consequences for thiruttu. GOD! My blood boils!

Srikanth,
Let us not try to defend/offend AR Rahman. Let us judge a composer only by his works, objectively. Unless he talks about the composition, gives inside information on the ratio 70% his fault, 15% Loy Mendosa, 10% god, 5% keyboard programming(?), we have no basis. As long we enjoyed his works, we were willing to give 100% credit to Rahman. Now that we realized that it has been copied, let us not try to defend AR Rahman for no reason. It is our fault that we trusted his works to be original. Rahman has never claimed that all of his compositions are original. Above all this, Rahman is in music business, period.

a serious request to bb
bb, is it possible for u to start a new section on copied songs in TFM? like 'songs of the month' we can have this as a permamnent section. iam willing to donate some mp3s of originals and there are many others here who can provide the tamil duplicates. what do u think?
atleast, it would be interesting froma music listeners point of view to see how MDS have been influenced and also how their idols are not as 'clean' as they thought they were;))
iam intersted very much. Pl. let me know.
i would also like everyone else's opinion and input on this.
even if we are not able to inform the original composer about this, atleast music fane who come to this forum would be aware of this and would definitely appreciate(or criticize;)).
RajaG, srikanth, arun and others, what do u think?

on: Tue May 2 13:09:21 EDT 2000
Vijay: Good idea! I am all for calling the section "asalum nakalum". We have enough brain/music power in this forum to objectively conclude about orig/copy. A small disadvantage - I think we don't have enough server space for DEVA, so we have to exclude him:-)
Sridhar,
I echo your thoughts. God! I would pay big money to have a face to face interview on live TV and charge these guys with evidence. (OK! I confess that I am impressed with the Mudhalvan plot!)

Sridhar, yes when I heard the score this morning, i was shocked...just harini's voice was missing...
Frankly it is pakka flick., I am upset with that fact,
hey what ever crap you give, make sure it is original.,this applies to anymd deva or arr or others,
rajag, I am ready to join the league,
but will other get into the stream line regardless of who the MD is, in this process of digging we might offend popular mds from tfm.
In fact few journalist from Chennai has been talking to me on this copying issues, mp3 piracy issues, I can tie them up here.

Take it easy guys.
I repeat.
ARR never claimed that his compositions were original.
Do not blame him because you decided to make him your idol.

Sridhar,
I'm with you. Now I feel uncomfortable as this matter goes very seriously.
- From: SRK (@ icache-3.doit.wisc.edu)
on: Tue May 2 14:34:23 EDT 2000
Sridhar:
ARR never directly said his compositions are original, but he has always implied it. He claimed that he always tries to be original, but that inspirations do happen inspite of his effort. Also, when questioned about Anu Malik and Anand-Milind, he said he would never discuss copyright with them.
So, there is no excuse for ARR in this matter.
What we can say however is that he is talented inspite of all this.

Sridhar,
basically being a piano player, I was really amazed by this piece...it is not easy to play this....lot of variations...but now the cat is out the bag...a huge...disappointment...I am sure I am not over reacting.... I reacted the same way when I heard Mugam....huge...disappointment
Who ever it is they cannot do this....
- From: rajaG (@ daecfp02.sprint.com)
on: Tue May 2 15:22:01 EDT 2000
Sridhar: I am surprised at your response to the 'call for action'. I do not have any personal vengeance against any MD, and have always tried to appreciate/criticize each MD on their own merrits/demerrits. However, I believe a time has come (actually long overdue) that we (the average fans) start insisting on genuine quality and ethics in the products we buy. Tell me, is it too much to ask for? We as Indians are notorious for accepting 'less' be it bootleg camera print bad videos, bad public service, or in this case, stolen goods. Just place yourself in the shoes of the original creator. I am absolutely all for committing this surgery here and now. ARR is not my hero merely because he did NOT claim that all his pieces are original. He is supposed to be such a "nice guy" who gives credit to even back-up singers. Well how about (hypothetically) the album of Iruvar says "Opening piano piece in Hello Mr....." courtesy XYZ.
- From: rajaG (@ daecfp02.sprint.com)
on: Tue May 2 15:27:09 EDT 2000
SRK: Nobody questions ARR's talent. In fact that is precisely the reason why it is even more of a crime. Believe me, as per law it is a CRIME not just a CRITICIZABLE act.
Naveen: C'mon! don't become passive now. We need all the champions on this crusade. I don't care who gets punished or who is selected as the first target. This issue is not about ARR fans or IR fans. It is about ethics.

If it would help bring in better quality in Indian music, I can not refute your statement.

RajaG,
What do you think if Loy had played this tune for ARR without saying that it is a 100% lift from 'The Firm'? ARR had already mentioned in an interview that he'll allow his team members to play on their own style. Assume ARR is innocent.
Lot of questions arise on my mind as this piano piece is a 100% lift. :)

rajaG,
"Ethics" and film industry. Thats a far cry. You would be opening up a huge panadora's box. One can trace this bootlegging all the way to the 60's. Every music composer worth his salt has done this, including IR. So nothing new about this. This is not a national outcry here. We ape or copy the west in every walk of life and the whole movie industry revolves around this. Maddonna passed of some sanskrit sloka in her album and made money.
ARR has'nt done any crime here for him to be prosecuted. Its just that I find his compositions more of a cut and paste variety than a natural flow and arun's link revalidated my impression.
