Geetha: Can you throw more light on layering ?

geetha,
i don't find any great resemblances between 'diana diana' and 'oru mani adithaa'. there might be a slight similiarity in notes in the opening lines but the rest is completely different. the starting piece of diana diana in sax(trumpet?) is much better than that of deva's song. even if there isa ny little similiarity in the pallavi i guess it is purely co-incidental.
regarding the ila arun song, i agree it is a bad choice of the singer. but the song itself cannot be blamed. for the given situation, which involves the heroine trying to seduce, u cannot
compose a melody in sahana can u, it would look absurd!
people have already complained before that IR should'nt have done those husky numbers with SJ in the past like 'nila kaayudhu' etc. i disagree.
that song is a fantastic composition, brings out the requires mood and fits the situation well.
thathom by ila arun is a beatsy number and the bagpiper-type starting at the beginning of the song is a novel attempt by raja. having said all this i don't like the song personally, but still can't deny IR credit for the composition.
and KR is handling the synth more nowadays for IR, and this might be one of the main reasons as to why IR's songs sound ARRish. u are right the melody is still there but the orchestration is lacking. i hope raja comes back with more numbers like 'alai meedhu'. also hariharan's voice , i believe is one one of the main factors as to why raja's songs sound ARRish and i also believe that this has invoked a lot of comparisons between diana diana and oru mani adithaal. whenever i hear a raja song by hariharan, for some reason or the other i start thinking that this song was composed by ARR. the compariosn is inevitable.
IR should give more numbers to SPB,IMO. his voice in ESK is still impeccable and smooth.

Sridhar: I think that SRIKANTH is the person to give you the best answer to this question. I'm able to recognise it as a technique and know that it involves recording 'layers' of music(e.g. Bass, Bassline, Drum Beat Sound1, Sound2...Violin 1, 2..., until the desired effect is achieved), one on top of the other, to give it a very rich sound. This is on practically all of ARR's songs and Vidhyasaagar has used it in some of his numbers, IR has used it in Alai Meedhu, you can hear the way the bass goes bnk bnk in the
background(listen to it very loud, on a good system and you will hear the various sounds blending and in separation), the instrumentation smoothly flowing one, on top of the other e.t.c.... Srikanth will be able to give more technical detail about this.

Murali Shankar:
I tried playing "Thirakaadha" on the keyboard and then "Karpoora Mullai.."
I thought that the pattern involved were very similar...and that the former was just but a modified rendition of the latter in a higher octave.
Note: I am a very amateur keyboard player and I could have goofed up...but my ears dont lie and I swear that they sounded similar :-)
Maybe it has to do with similar ragas or something, in which case, I have no clue!
And about all this furore about IR vs ARR,why dont you all give up, Pleasssse !! This is a never-ending argument and pretty boring at that!
I've been visiting this site since July 97 and I am discovering that the discussions are becoming staler and staler...It all ultimately boils down to ARR vs IR... :-)
I dont see former regulars like NOV,Kanchana,Gopal,PG around and I am not surprised!
Why dont we all restrict discussions to upcoming music and stuff?
Thanks

Geetha,
Even I am looking forward to rahmans sangamam. Given the kind of carnatic numbers (en veetu thotathil, ennavale, uyirum neeyae, narumugayae, mettu podu, kannado) he has produced in the past, it has really raised expectations.
I read somewhere nityashree is a doing a song in sangaman.
BTW, Did you listen to the adhimantaria title score? I liked it.
Any idea when sangaman is likely to be released?

Is Jodi a legitimate movie or is it just a music album. Because Doli Sajaa Ke Rakhnaa is the remake of Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai. Of course ARR is not abobe it. He composed RaakkOzhi rendu muzhichchirukku for Uzhavan, used the same track "aa siggulu.." for the Telugu movie Grandmaster. Later when Grand Master was dubbed in Tamil he used the same track for a Tamil Song (talk about coming back full circle)

RajaG that is not an unique incident in TFM. IR has done this few times('andharangam yaavumae','maasi maasam aalana ponnu','pudhiya poovidhu poothadhu' etc have 2 versions)

leena,
I appreciate your enthusiasm but did you have to end your statement with a needless slam like this?
will put all other misic directors to dust
RajaG,
Thalaiva, this is going to bring about another brawl since it begs people to show examples of other MDs who've done this and the tempers will flare up and ruin the calm that's been achieved over the past week.
Guys, can we at least keep "IR's New Albums" and "New Releases by ARR" threads as neutral zones for people who only want to keep up with the latest news, releases, etc.

Leena,
I am also one of those millions who patiently waits for the next release of ARR. But to my disappointment ARR's music in ESK is below average (whether you accept it or not).
Regarding me making music, I am not that knowledgeable enough like ARR like you to become a MD.
Regarding taking music lessions, I don't think I need any music lessions. I know carnatic music, Western Classical and I have been listening music for 30 years.

Jodi is a movie starring Aish, Prasanth and Simran. The songs are the same as DSKR because the director (or producer) bought the rights from the director (or producer) of DSRK. It is not totally ARRs fault and maybe is not his fault at all. The movie is said to have a new storyline.

Geetha: Since I had reservations about having this argument in this thread initially itself and since seniors have expressed their desire to keep this argument out of this thread, I'll mail you or you revive that "Impact oF whatever of whoever on Raja or TFM" thread. Just an aside however:I just heard Ilvenir kala panchami- it doesnt seem to be a song which I would bother to give a second heearing,BTW- and to my untrained , probably unsophisticated ears, any possible resemblance whatsoever to Musthafa on any count appear to be purely fictional:-).

Ok, I have had enough of this. This is not what this thread was meant to be. Only post messages having to do with ARRs new releases. NO MORE. Go start some futile thread for discussion about anything else, ie IRvARR. Please TFM page group correct this porblem and enforce it. Remember how digressions used to be handled? Many people have stopped posting here because of the nonsense that goes on here sometimes. Many of us are also on the verge of not visiting this site anymore. Please let us discuss ESK, Jodi and other upcoming releases. Thanks.
