One of the important virtue's for a composer is to quit playing instruments. Else his musical work will be a resultant of that instrument. IR quit playing guitar once he got into composing.
This gave him the ability to see the big picture.
The same is also true for Bach & company.
To step out of the instrumenalist shoes and get into the composer's will definetly help the budding, so called composers(including ARR) to give more mature works.

I dont think so, playing an instrument is a skill, if they are good in that I dont know why a composer should give it away.
Can you tell me how can this improve to produce mature works?

key point to note here is a composer should have the ability to think like other instrumentalists,
regardless of he playing it or not.

Anand M,
"The same is also true for Bach & company"
dont know how true it was...as for beethoven and mozart .. they were both great pianists and continued to play for long .! i will be happy and to know (if u can provide us with some links) about the contrary. as for the wcm maesteros..most of them were violin / piano players and have come up with wonderful compositions for the orchestra..i dont see their failure to see the big picture despite being good instrumentalists ... ! i dont agree that playing an instrument for long influences one's composing !

bm,
Agreed mozart was a great painist but that was
only a manifestation of his thought process.
He did'nt use the piano for his compositions nor
did he see his work as pianist.
Mozart for most part wrote his work without an
instrument(Watch the movie Amadeus).
I guess we should open a seperate thread for this.
Lets continue discussing IR new albums.

AM,
i only responded to ur statement of being an instrumentalist doesnt help the composer see the big picture..! and never said he used the piano to compose !

Analog,
"Rahman's major chunk belongs to POP, isn't it?"
I'm not sure.It would involve the drudgery of going thro his songs and classifying and quantifying them.I'm yawning thinking about that.

Trend said: "I think this should be seen from a contextual perspective and not a absolute one.I think his thoughts seem to convey the feeling people are misusing it in a lot of instances. "
Didn't this whole digression start because Trend didn't like Kiru reading between the lines of IR's comments?
And now, Trend is reading between the lines of ARRs comment?!
yaaruppa ange,

kooththan,
Maybe you are right. But "hiding behind technology" is a hypothesis beyond intolerable degree.
If you think what I said is intolerable too,I'll take it back and sorry for hypothesising like that in the first place.

To set the record straight - I did not say 'ARR is hiding behind technology'. Interested people should read my exact comments which goes like. "Also, it is the media's responsibility to comment about the music/trend etc..Can IR say SAR's music sucks ? Deva is one hell of a copy cat ? ARR is hiding behind technology ? (okay..I made these up..I am not saying it is IR's opinion). No..it is not good thing to say. So these sort of questions should never be asked (see IR says he is an insider). "
My comment is totally different than what it is being made out to be.

Where can find Andan Adimai songs?

What ARR is doing now is what IR had done when he took over from older MSV...introducing a lot of WM and instruments like th Oboe and Horn and really giving a classy and sophisticated touch to TFM at that time...so ARR had done justice by digitizing music as it the trend today...times have changed, accept it....no point in calling "Pop" music trash or accusing ARR of "hiding beyond technology"...achievements speak louder than words and ARR's achievements prove it...u can't deny that his songs don't sound good or pull your heart strings...if you do then it is only your spite and hate speaking...
IR had previously said in a TV interview on DD in 1991 during the release of "Thalapathi" - "music is just 7 notes and their combination"...
genius lies in knowing how to combine these notes to get the effect desired (my addtion)....both IR and ARR have done it well enough and are still doing it for their respective audiences.

"hiding beyond technology"
Did you really read Kiru's posting properly? Who has told like this...that's a satire by Kiru and if some are not intelligent enough to understand...
both IR and ARR have done it well enough
I'm finding tough to identify even 15 songs in which ARR had done it "well enough" and how some people can put both of them in the same level is difficult to comprehend:-(

Probabaly, you might have heard only twenty of his songs. Try to hear more. You will still have just 5 to quote as bad ones.
Okay. I am going thru your collection of 1000 songs. I would like to send you back the same .xls file with my comments( or grade to say how much I liked it) for each songs on that. This is because, for the first 300 songs that I have heard or tried to recollect, some have impressed me , but many makes me feel that how such a song can be called a great one. Few songs I could not recollect, may be I might not have heard them at all. My source of film music over the last 18 years has largely been AIR.
Since, you have arranged them in alphabetical order of film names, I beleive that I will get many great ones as I scroll thru.
I have one complaint. In the film Anjali, you have only put four songs, if I am right. It is one of my faveroit albums and all the songs are great and well ahead of ARR time. Had Sound Engg. been that good to those songs, it would have sounded even greater.
