ARR,
What happens to you? From a hard-core fan of you, I am getting continuous disappointments from you for last two years. No big hits like Gentle Man , Kaadhalan etc. Now it is time for you to spend some time and get you fame back here in TN. I was totally upset with the music in PP. Really it sucks the time. People like Bharatwaj, Yuvan , Bharani are giving good hits. You are out of picture here. Come on ARR and prove yourself. Otherwise, you will be forgetten by the time.

PP Picks:
1. Azhagae Sugama - Typical ARR stuff. Probably the best song in the first hearing
2. Nee Thaane Endhan Desiya Geetham - Reminds of some PB Srinivas song, may be because of the voice of the guy and the words 'Kaalayum Neeye, Maalayum Neeye'
3. Nathir Thinna - ?

Groovy music!. You need to listen to it from a CD and also on a good system to really appreciate all the details in the PP album.

was totally disappointed but only for a few days . the music of PP started to grow on me and like all his music some justice must be done by listening via a good cd based system. great songs and compositions!

PP was indeed a revelation. I look forward to KB's use of the songs on screen now. But considering that KB is 75+ and bordering on senility (check out Duet or his TV serial in Jaya TV - Anni, its real sad) I wonder what he has in store for us. Would it be contrived out-of-sense characterisations or a master film maker KB we know for ages - the film's release will tell us!
The songs are well, very very unique. No 'azhage sugama' isnt one of them. In fact its the most predictable song in the album - an assembly line ARR number. 'manmatha maasam' is more like it. Truly different and makes you sit up and wonder what ARR has done! The end result is very enjoyable! The singing, intermittent folkish percussion that takes you by surprise et all. Great work. 'moondrezhuthu' is fast and dancy. Hope it translates well on screen too. It did remind me a bit of Pavitra's 'coimbatore maankutty' number though, a bit!
I look forward to some spectacular work of choreograhy by Lawrence for the tracks 'Love check' and 'Nadir dhinna'. They are bound to have tremendous visual appeal. 'nee thaan en desiya geetham' was reminiscent of Sangamam, yes. But a very ear-friendly number. Something which forces you to hum just after the song ends. Such songs are rare from Rahman....most songs go above our heads when we hear them first. Balram, surprisingly sounds a bit like Ilayaraja at places!!! 'athisiya thirumanam' was very interesting. There was no particular direction this song was taking me, it went haywire, literally. But I assume the way it'd be used in the movie should make ALL the difference. The pick of the album was the title song.
Exhilarating number. Never has Rahman resorted to so much effects in one song. I really hope this is not wasted in the title sequence!
Great work by ARR. Rahman's music again proves that its radically different from mainstrem indian film music.
A very worthy addition to Rahman's repertoire!

A R Rahman's new film starring Kamal Hassan and Amitabh Bachan together in a bilingual to be directed by KS Ravikumar. The name of the movie is Naran (as reported in the Diwali special issue of Kumudam - the name is not mentioned in the Times of India article however!)

When I listended to PP songs, at first I was disappointed. As I listened to them more often, they sounded tolerably. Even so, PP is disappointing in many ways. Maybe they will sound better with visuals.

Manmatha Maasam is a classic. Another one from ARR.
BTW the lyrics in PP suck big time, except for the Suguma songs. Rahman had this problem in Hindi too where his dubbed films had horrendous lyrics. I think he should do something about it.
Lyrics too contribute to the "listenability" of the songs.

dear vinayak,
azage sugama is written by vairamuthu...the rest is all by vaalee except paravasam paravasam which is by muthukumar----speaks for itself!!
arr should once again do full and full songs with vairamuthu....(actually you can almost imagine as though vairamuthu wrote that "azage sugama" song thinking about their combo before the separation!)

After reading PP reviews and hearing songs once, I felt that the album wasa letdown. Now after hearing it for 3 days, I think it is indeed a very good album. My favourites are Manmada maasam and Nee thaan En Desiya Geetham. Naathir Dinna and Love check are cool too. As many of you have said, Azhage sugama is the "prototype" Rehman tune ..... and slightly resembles the Ratchagan song ..... overall I think the album is better than many other Rahman albums though not among his best ........

it's ratchagan's 'kayyil mithakum' u mean...
someone in another group pointed out that these 2 songs have the same raaga, but that the tune is completely different...

AR R is traveling on two boats at the same time, that's why his music is going down. Now its time to give Hits like 'Roja' 'Gentleman' 'Kadhalan' 'Indian' 'Thiruda Thiruda' etc.

Mr Coelho,
ARR will travel in two boats or three boats. Who said his music is going down.
You should listen the new albums like Lagaan, Zubaida,Rhythum, Kandu Kondein Kandu Kondein

moondrezhuthu reminded me so much of an IR song-pengaloda pooti from freinds
azhage sugama-kaiyil midhakkum from ratchagan
beginning of adhisaya thrumanam-thannamthanimaiyil iru vizhi from kadhal oviyam
needhan starts like a real oldish sounding song-wanders into varaganadhikaraioram and then when chitra comes in with that humming -duet.
I have already mentioned ALL arr songs remind me of some other songs-well this collection of songs only reinforces that argument...

ARR's PP will sure become hit. There had been murmours that he was neglecting Tamil music etc. I wud not know abt. that but possibly Tenali's music was compounding problems. But of course the films previous to that Kandukondein & Alaipaythe were major major hits. So also Rhythm (w.r.t the music). people must note that Tenali was done in such a short time due to some cash problems for kamal, and Rehman obviously generally does not do such stuff. becos' of kamal's request he had . Obviously the Rahman brand name will suffice, kamal thinks. And even though the fil's music was not a big hit..it had its numbers hogging the limelight for sometime.
Now coming to PP, it is yet another offering we will not associate with normal MDs, but will associ. with ARR. As with all ARR films, the music will take some time to sink in. I have cursed ARR's music on first few hearings, as have millions but then when the songs sink in, they prove to be major hit. And since he got the time for PP to churn out 8 songs (this was not under some 3 month period like Tenali), I guess he is back to his musical best. In every ARR film, one or two songs stay out in first hearing. Azhage Sugama and Nee thaan en are probably the ones to impress in first hearing in this film. And of course there is the experimentation in naaathir thinna, and manmatha maasa. And as u start hearing more of the rest of the tracks they will also start to sink in. I guess it will bring back ARR to tamil. I only pray this musical he is doing in English does not take him away from Tamil. And he shud maintain the same head, and not be too carried away with his overseas ventures. And start taking Tamil films serioulsy with competition from harris and vidyasagar.
One big complaint I have against ARR. Why the damn he is not using the great SPB. I accept giving new chances to youngsters etc. But then SPB is like ...just can't describe the GOD. Kaathal rojave & Duet were masterpieces amongst ARR's music hits.I just hope he uses this ggreat. And if he combines with vairauthu too, then this trio can beat all and produce music in the quality of roja, duet etc....

PP is ok compared to ARR's standards.. But 'Nee dhane en desiya geedham' is the best of rahman in recent times... i hope he delivers more songs like that... Azhage sugama ofcourse reminds us of some old tunes... as vinayak had mentioned Manmatha maasam is good as well... but other songs are really below par.... lets wait for good tunes in 'udaya' or 'kudai' (manjal kudai or kanathil muthamittal or whatever it is'
