All the recently hyped up albums of IR have ended up being very ordinary. Hope Hey Ram does'nt fall into the same category.

Some of the numbers in recent albums of IR have been good. But didn't get the attention that it deserved and that's why most of them are flop. I don't have any doubts about Hey ram since its under the banner of kamal. So its should be a problem in becoming a hit.

Yes, Kalapaani was made in Hindi.
Also, Raja scored for Balu Mahendra's Aur Ek Prem Kahani a few years ago....definitely less than 15.

Guys,
Other than 'Niram pirithu paarthen' there is nothing much to show that IR has regained his charm of the 80s. He is yet to give a complete album in the last 3 years as he did for manirathnam and others time and again in the 80s and in the early 90s.

Vijay
I dont think so. Cause "Naan Thanga Roja..." is a IR brand song, I enjoyed the rythem he set for this song.
"Kaadhal neethaana.." is really a catchy one. If it is picturized well, it will become a hit.
"Thavikkiren...." is a amazing song!!
Of course, "Niram pirithu paarpen..." is a classic!
Its a matter of publicity to make these songs to be HIT!

Visiri,
Though I agree that TIME is a welcome change, by no means u can compare with it say, mouna raagam or idhya kovil. I hope u see what i mean.

IMO
"Time" is a very average album, except for 'niram Pirithu '(reminds me of all the good days of IR)
Though I would be happy if IR really makes a comeback (sure he has not left in the minds of his zillon music fans); I don't think this is the album that could bring him back.
Bava & KR are atrocious. "Ninachapadi..' really sounds like a SG song (I have never seen IR create such a song in his hay days). Other songs are just ok
Vijai I agree with u; Time though not a disaster, has nothing much to rave about.

Vijay
What u say is correct, we can not compare with those albums!
But I feel most of IR songs have not been brought into the the limelight!! Im sure "Yennai Thaalatta Varuvaala.." would not have been a hit, if the movie had failed!!
"Thendralai Kandu Kolla..." from NILAVEY MUGAM KAATTU is an Excellent song... but it did not
reach the ppl.
KAAKAI CHIRAGINILEY/KAADHAL ROJAAVEY/KUMMI PAATTU are better albums when u compare to much exaggerated kuppai albums like MUDHALVAN/SANGAMAM/KAADHALAR THINAM/THAALAM.
As Thathuvavathi said VEERATHAALATTU also an amazing album which contains really good songs, I would recomend for those looking for IR brand good songs to listen to this album.
And its also true that IR is not putting more time/effort to make the songs hit, he works depending upon the Director/Producer.

Has anybody heard the Mugam BGMs in G Sureshs site ? The melody in one of the BGM (Found Identity) sounds familiar to me. It is some song which IR seems to have turned into a violin concerto. Also, it looks like he has mastered the art of overlaying an Indian melody over a WCM backdrop. Not to mention his contrapuntal arrangements of ICM-ICM and ICM-WCM.
Fantastic composing in Mugam BGM. Check it out folks. This is music untainted by any commercial urges.

Refiff's interview goes like this:
"...the one man they all turn to when all else fails -- Ilayaraja.
And the doyen of music composers has done a bang up job. Consider the task he had -- the music had been laid out, the songs tuned and picturised. So Raja had to come in, stay with the lyrics and score music that was different from what Subramaniam had done -- but which would yet fit with the lip sync.
Which is precisely what he achieved -- and no one asks Raja how he does what he does!..."
Rediff's interviewer may be wondering how is this possible! But any average admirer of IR will know that this is child's play for him!:-))

IR's job has one major difficulty:
The timing of the song is pre-fixed, so he cannot even add an extra gamagam anywhere. This also constrains the interludes since the picturization is complete.
- From: bb (@ ts001d38.cha-il.concentric.net)
on: Fri Nov 19 03:23:32 EST 1999
SRK, i don't think so.
i think composing will be simpler bcos,
1. the metre is fixed.
2. the mood is fixed.
3. he can do little tweaks, rather than giving the song a whole new look.
4. i would expect the songs to be centered around the lyrics rather than the tune.
5. he can play as much as he wants in the interlude.
6.thru clever editing, he can adjust places where lip sync is not possible with his tune.
picturization might be complete, but editing is still there:-) he can easily add words/remove words that don't suit the tune.

- From: SRK (@ icache-3.doit.wisc.edu)
on: Fri Nov 19 11:11:13 EST 1999
bb: Our interpretations are different. I mean more difficult in the sense it is more difficult to innovate since the timing is fixed. He is constrained to do something similar to what LSub has already done.
He can certainly not compose longer interludes since that would mean adding picturization or resorting to (cheap?) tricks like repeating shots.
- From: bb (@ ts001d42.cha-il.concentric.net)
on: Fri Nov 19 11:24:02 EST 1999
SRK, no.. do u think they will have just enough picturization only to fit lsubs' interludes?:-) there are always several buffer shots, which one can use. i am sure there are no dearth of them.

While filming a song, directors shoot atleast 25% more footage for the songs... many times, twice for the same charanam. In addition to this, they take extra still-rolling and tight-shots to fill the gaps during editing. So, there is always enough room during the final editing and to make changes even after the rush/first-cut.

thathuvavaathi, true..
has IR done this before? i vaguely remember daas daas chinnappa daas daas as done after the picturization..but don't remember any other scenario.
