Paadagarin Sangathi

After reading some exciting exchanges in threads comparing Hariharan and TMS to SPB, I was wondering if classically trained singers and musicians in our DF could shed more light on singers and their unique signature sangathis. For example, a singer friend of mine frowned that SJ gave the same sangathi 3 or 4 times consecutively without opting for variations when she winds down the song "Panneeril nanaindha pookkal mella sirikka". On the other extreme I've heard the charge that Hariharan gives more sangathi than is needed in a song. Can you guys give examples of your favorite/irritating use of sangathis by singers so ignorants like myself can identify what each singer brings to a song?

An easier way to do this might be to take the same song sung by two different singers, but the discussion need not be limited to just comparing different singers singing the same song. Please do take into account singers of different eras and both male and female singers.

  Thanks for the link I checked it out and enjoyed it. I believe Hari and Vijay have given a good explanation of what sangathis are. Let me try to add to that by giving some concrete examples from popular songs:
  Vaazhvil Sowbaakkiyam Vandhadhu--SPB must have been left unleashed for this song, almost in every repeated line in this song he shows a variation (that is instead of walking the line drawn by the tune, he weaves and dances about the line and accentuates the tune better)
  
  Listen to the first time he sings "Naan ariyaatha ragasiyam ondru noolidai paarthaen purindhadhu indru". He just covers the tune on the first line. The second time while singing the exact line he stretches the vowels beautifully in "ariyAAAAAtha" and stresses the consonants in "oNNNNNdru" and again stretches the vowels in "PAAAAAArthaen". This sets up a beautiful contrast for PS when she continues that saranam stanza by singing "thaalaattavaa mannavaa unnayum pillaipoal naan thaayaana poathum" really fast.
  
  Now, when and where SPB stretched and stressed the words in the song become his signature sangathis in that song.
  
  In the song, "Paarvai Ondrae Poadhumae" a TMS, LRE duet, LRE impressed me with the way she rounds out the line, "pen vaendumaa paarvai poAAAAAAAdhumAAAAAAAh"
  
  In the song, "Maalaippozhuthin Mayakkathilae" a PS classic for the ages, I especially like the way she lingers on the line ending word "thoazhIIIIIII" This not only enriches the sandham but goes way beyond it in understanding the underlying situation for the song and amplifies the beckoning mood. Also, the transition back to the pallavi with her vibrating aaaaaaaaaaaa, after "maravaen maravaen endraar udanae marandhuvittaar thoazhi, marandhuvittaar thoazhi" is priceless. PS' sangathis are very subtle, not overt like Hariharan's or SPB's. In transitions within the song, I still haven't heard any other singer male or female who can maintain the voice, clarity of pronunciation and pitch changes as smooth as PS.
  
  This is my understanding of sangathis. I'll let the experts say more on other singers.

  Udhaya, you should listen to the way PS sings, in the song "Andha Sivagaami Maganidam" - a duet by PS & TMS from the film "Pattanathil Boodham". This is a classic example of PS' sangathis being highly overt. (unlike being subtle at other times).
  
  In the past I used to think sangathis (like a line in a stanza being sung flat the first time and with twists and bends the second time) are merely part of the tune - not until someone highlighted that it's all the singer's imagination! Though I feel, the above song cannot be total imagination when it comes to sangathis!
  
  Also you should listen to "Thathai Nenjam" by PS in Sarvar Sundaram where never she sings the lines of the pallavi the same way again!
  
  Another beautiful improvisation can be seen in the song "Aadal Paadal Kaadhal enbadhu appOdhu" by S Janaki from Veettukku Veedu Vaasappadi - a cool song like a gentle breeze!
  
  One more, "Eriyile Oru Kashmir ROja" by KJY and PS - while KJY mostly sings the tune PS introduces her classic improvisations wherever possible...especially the lines "Maalaiyile Varum Mannanukkindru Manmadha Aaradhanai"!

  One of the songs of LR Eswari - thatcome to my mind is the song - Ammadi keloru seithi ....
  picturised on KR vijaya (riding in a parisal). I don't remember the name of the movie. Actually she mentionsed this in her malarum ninaivugal. This was a great song.
  Vani jayaram -too has sung some exceptionally well improvising some of the lines matching with the tune.
  eg. Yaaradhu sollamal nenjalli poovathu-she sings yaaradhu with a couple of varaiations.
  The other song in punnaiagai mannan - kelungal kavithai piranthathu raagam is also another beautiful rendition by Vani.
