Sri:
Even I find it surprising to note from your review that the theme song is liked by you. For me it was the most unacceptable.

Srinath,
I guessed that by reading your stylish posts. But, not "Rajni" style, though:-)))) One thing I can't understand is - why should you stop watching Rajni movies? - avaroda baadhippu vandhuda koodaadhunna?:-))))
BTW, it is really interesting to know that ARR has used MSV to sing in "Sangamam". Did MSV sing for Bharathwaj in "Kaadhal Mannan"? I know he acted in that movie.

hi bulb
what a wonderful song!!
I think the singer is Suresh Wadkar--(incredibly talented but not well known singer; except in Maharashtra)
The raag was the same as 'Bhole re puppi..'
Since I saw it long time back, I do not recall the words exactly, but I can clearly recall how elated I felt when I heard that song.
I will stop here, before somebody reminds us that this is a tamil film music discussion forum (i.e., only IR Vs ARR discussions!!)

Srinath, Please dont compare Nityasri to Ila Arun! This would also render Shobha jobless. The way NS sang Minsaara Pove also fitted well with Ramya's character in padiappa.
"If NS had sung some purely classical song in TFM" "poor tune"... Whats purely classical? IMO, Minsaara kanna is also classical. And hows the tune poor? Whats the basis for comparison?
bb/bulb... Are saaz songs available on net? is it by ARR? give some info guys!

chandy: i don't know if saaz is available on net.. should be, at planet bollywood or so.. each song is by a different MD. zakir, bhupen hazarika and others have composed. the only connection with ARR is that bulb chose a wrong thread to post in:)))

Please add an "IMO" in front of all my statements and you'll have your answers ! But that takes the zing out of any review :-( You know what is purely classical, apparum yen enna indha thaaku thaakareenga ? :-) It's a poor tune in many ways, the first being poor in melodic content. The second being poor in expressive ability. Then comes paucity in innovativeness and so on. Is that tune comparable to say, "Pudhu Vellai Mazhai" ? Just an example !
If Ramya Krishnan was shouting on screen, maybe NS did sing it well. But without seeing the picturization, I can only say that NS was shouting. I think you are also reading too much into my review ! You probably think that just because NS does not belong to the IR clan or camp, I do not like her. But that is far from the truth. IMO, she did not sing this song very well. Even though the tune was not very good the first male singer has sung it well. IMO, NS was plain bad in this song. Isn't she the one who sung "Maargazhi Poove" from May Maadham ? That was pretty good ! (but even in that song the endless humming at the end is annoying :-( )

Srinath :
Back to Minsaara Kanna song -
>You know what is purely classical, apparum yen"
By my definition, Minsaara poove is classical and nitya sri was an appropriate choice. One of the earlier postings of Geetha says how "classical" the song is! ARR comes up with atleast one classical number in most of his albums, and MInsaara poove is the classical piece in Padaiappa!
>It's a poor tune in many ways, the first being poor in melodic content.
melodic content? Was the song supposed to be a melody? The situation of the song in the movie is something like a dance-music clash between Rajni and Ramya.. and it was supposed to be a song for classical dance (its debatable if whatever ramya did as dance was classical!! :-) ), and the song just fitted the situation.
>The second being poor in expressive ability.
Is expressiveness only manifested in "sinungals" (harini in suthi suthi) or "aas and oos"? Nitya Sri's voice - the high-pitch, the gambheeram exactly reflects the arrogance which Ramya was supposed to portray on screen. We all admire SJ's versatility in making her voice suit a child, silk smita-kinda actresses, and folk tunes (inji idupazhaga) etc. If NS tries to do the same, why call her as someone "SHOUTING", "did not sing well" etc..??? Isnt this a form of expression too?
> Then comes paucity in innovativeness and so on.
Innovativeness! Its customary for classical songs in TFM to end with swaras - right from Paadariyen padipariyen to Kannodu Kanbhadhellam. It was an INNOVATIVE effort by ARR to try just brigas and hummings as a substitue for Swaras. And the outcome is certainly applaudable!
As geetha and others pointed out, this song is based on vasatha raagam, which is not "that-much-popular" in TFM!
>If Ramya Krishnan was shouting on screen, maybe >NS did sing it well. But without seeing the >picturization, I can only say that NS was >shouting.
Even the lyrics stand testimony for the kind of situation on screen - "En koondalai yendhi kolla unakoru vaipu-allava, naan unda michha paalai nee undal... motchangal unakallava" (Srinath, i thot u pay attention to lyrics, given your memory about sun music songs!! :) ). Irrespective of the situation on screen, the song was rendered well - the fast pace, the high-pitch, and the brigas at the end!
>IMO, NS was plain bad in this song.
The high-pitch in this song isnt very different from her debut song "Kannodu Kanbadhellam" in Jeans and the voice is also not very different. The hi-pitch she touches and the rendering of brigas at the end of the song arent really easy! Since it was NS who was classically trained, she could do a good job of it!!

Chandy:
>By my definition, Minsaara poove is classical
Well, by my definition it is not ! The charanam is semi-classical at best. I'm not an expert in carnatic music, but I know that this song breaks quite a few basic rules, and not very nicely at that !
> melodic content?
Any song requires a basic melody. Please don't start off about how my favourite MD's songs are not melodious any more ! :-) We'll stick to ARR here ! MK was catchy in parts, that's all !
> it was supposed to be a song for classical dance
dance depends on the beats - talam whatever. Classical dance is typically danced to classical beats. A classical song is sung to classical beats. Minsara Kanna's only claim to good percussion starts and end with the prelude.
> Is expressiveness only manifested in "sinungals"...
I don't recall making such a statement ! But expressiveness is more than singing out loud and clear ! Same Rajnikanth in similar situation with that "Telugu Inspectrini" actress :-) - forgot her name - in Mannan ! "Mannar mannane enakku kappam kattu nee" ! I didn't want to being up a non-ARR song here, but that's the best example I can come up with at short notice ! Expression is a lot of things, least of all being singing out loud to portray arrogance ! Of course, the tune is more at fault than NS. I heard the song again just now and maybe, just maybe, NS stops short of shouting. Still pretty loud !
> Its customary for classical songs in TFM to end with swaras
Different does not always mean good ! The effort might be laudable, the output, however, IMO, is unbearable ! The brighas may be tough to sing - perhaps with a reason ! Can you sing in 5 different scales in the same song ? Tough, ain't it ? But good ? No ! The humming was horrid. Again, I don't want to keep quoting IR, so let me stick to ARR - remember Garden Vareli's humming, oops ! I'm sorry ;-) I meant Kadhal Rojave's humming ? Pretty simple stuff - but wasn't it attractive ?
Ok, so NS wasn't all that bad. But she wasn't very good either. I stick to my statement that the first male singer was the only one who sang a very mediocre tune, very well ! Compared to the other songs in Padayappa, MK might be a shade better. But it is still a mediocre song with some portions being outright bad.
Chandy, one more thing - I specifically mentioned that I wrote the review even as I was listening to the song (the first time ever), and I could point out only what I felt was very obvious. I am listening to the song a third time now and I see a few more good things about it - bad news is that I see about half-a-dozen other faults with it !
Hee, Hee...Sun Music-ellam edhukku inga... ;-))
