Yesudas and Illayaraja

With so many topics opened, I have not seen one that discussed these two great musicians. Yesudas and IR have provided TFM some soothing melodies and wonderful songs. Let me start by opening the thread with "Edho Ninaivugal" ... This song has mesmerized me for a long time. Please bring out the best songs with these two and I would personally like to get a list of the songs and keep it safe for a million years.

PS :: Please for heaven sake do not drag ARR into this... This should be purely related to KJY and IR with comments related to the songs and their beauty.. Awaiting your responses....

  good topic. I have controversially always maintained that KJY was IR's fav. singer :-). anyway lets look for something recent as the old ones must have been covered already!

  One more song of KJY, where IR took a very simple tune and elevated it to a very pleasant melody. "Thenpandi thamizhe" from "Paasa Paravaigal".
  Another example of a simple tune rendered beautifully by KJY is "Pottu vaitha oru vatta nila" from Idhayam.
  
  We dont see such simple tunes becoming a hit these days, ( hmm.. tastes change..)

  There are two songs that have captivated my inner soul. The orchestration, tempo and the nauances of these two songs are soul stirring. I have been listening to these songs for the past 22 years and everytime I am haunted by it. I beleive it would be impossible for someone to come up with that kind of a composition. I am a ardent Mozart, Dvorak and Puccini (Tosca, La Boheme) fan and I fell that the these two songas are on par to some of the work of the abobe mentioned composers.

  What Bharat said about "KJY being IR's favorite singer" is 'controversially' true !!
  
  If you look at the list of songs that IR has given to KJY, you will hardly find (may be few) any bad ones. I always felt that IR picked his best and gave it to KJY and the results have been astounding.
  
  Listen to "Endhan Nenjil" .. evergreen melody.

  KJY has some discretion in the choice of songs. Usually composers in FM other than mallu dont thrust on him any song which is not melodious. One reason - his voice. The composers themselves did not give him a chance to sing rotten songs :-) Or to put it a diffrent fashion, his voice is something which every composer wanted for melody / classical. SPB was like water. He would fit in any vessel. But KJY was not deliberately given such numbers since composers/KJY/lay - all could rarely digest a number from him which is not melodious.
  
  But in MFM, he has done a lot of "spb like" numbers too. there is one song - "rajeshwari" which is an eve teaser. This song has a wonderful combo of carnatic/pop/folk all being sung by the one and only KJY. Why ? because the lay in MFM can hardly digest any song not sung by KJY :-)
  
  SPB and KJY were every composer's favorite. For every KJY song in tamil , I can site two SPB numbers ( from IR alone) which are as good. I am sure composers( not the present day) will have a tough time if asked to choose between these two.

  rahul, yes:
  SJ and SPB were used by IR for all types of songs; from dappanguththu to melody to classical to folk to pop, whereas KJY and UmaRamanan(UR) were used only(mostly) for Melodies, (semi-)classical songs. This is the formula adapted by IR to effectively use both KJY and SPB because these two would give tough time in choosing, as mentioned by MS.

  Going back to IR's early days,
  'poo vizhi vAsalil yAradi vanthathu' comes to mind immediately.
  chella piLLai saravaNan (with PS) (peN jenmam). I am sure the director conjured up a situation similar to that of 'kaNNan oru kaikkuzhanthai'. The song never quite touched the heights that it's predecessor did in terms of popularity, but to me, remains an all time favourite. This used to be my mid/late seventies favourite of KJY along with 'veeNai pEsum athai meettum viralgaLai kaNdu' (MSV), 'gangai nathi Oram' (Govardhan) and 'malaichchAralil' (SG).
  'uravugaL thodarkathai' from avaL appadiththAn. Good song for a good movie of those times.

  iam sure someone would have mentioned this song.... this is my all time favourite of IR, in fact.... "Poove Sempoooveee"..... what a class melody..... i was hearing this song for an year, and when the movie got released, saw it in a theatre on the first day, and man, i would rate that's the *worst* movie ever produced :-).... but the song really mesmerises me whenever i hear it.....

  i remember we used to have this "Iravin Madiyil" in Ceylon Radio.... oh man.... will we have something like that anytime now ? there are lots of KJY's song's which would make u sleep for sure - "Kanne Kalaai maane", "Poove Sempovee"
