hmmm..... looks like KB fumbled again towards the end of the movie.... may be iam wrong, but i have seen this happening in many KB's recent (last 10 years) movies..... starting from Punnagai Mannan, Pudu Pudu vasantham, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, and worst of all Duet (well this is a junk movie through out)...... i will add one more word, all IMHO :-)

sabesan,
you were correct in your obs about duet-what a rubbish movie.things just seemed to slip out of his hands-senility seems to be catching up with him.thrughout his characters have always struck as being weird(the weirdest is ofcourse agnisatchi sarita-imagine the poor first day viewers who had to sit through the movie on a deepavali evening when it was released first!)

well, actually its more than 10 years - i think close to 15 years now....... Punagai Mannan came for 86 Deepvali i think......
guys sorry for the digression....

PP is unbelievably bad. Worse than Duet and Kalki. There is no logic, no cohesion between seems. Like someone said, KB has lost his charm. I did not say this after saying Duet or Kalki, but this movie is total junk, IMO. And the climax, my God ! Words fail me. Truly insufferable.

To me it sounds like ARR wanted try something out and sound different but his usual hummable tunes are missing. Some songs sound good in parts. Something is missing in the album. But there are lot of new addition to ARR "sounds". Nowadays he seems to at ease in HFM and develop cold feet in TFM. For KB's 100th movie it is disappointing.

Review of PP music in Music Magazine:
On this album he seems to be moving further towards music that is broken and non-linear. Question: is he moving towards creative abstraction or is he distracted? Your answer will depend on whether you are a die-hard fan or a less overwhelmed observer. Being musically inclined towards coherence than towards such distraction, I would rank Rahman's latest score lower than Bombay, Dil Se and Mudhalvan.

Here is what popular writer cum analyst Sujatha(Mr.Rangarajan)has to say about
Parthale Paravasam
Q:How is the PP music?
Ans:Ones doesnt fall in love with the first listen but you will fall in love after repeated hearing. Rahman has tried a different approach to tamil film music instead of the usual pallavi, saranam and a small instrumentation between them

The songs are all choppy, I havent had the cahnce to see teh videos yet, but how do you do dance numbers for such chopped up stuff. It does sort of grow on you but definetley the usual ARR passion was missing from the music. It just wasnt all there

I have seen some responses wheren my criticism of ARR's music for PP has not been well received. My justification is that this being KB's 100th film and ARR being the top composer in India, he could have done much better. It is ARR's own fault if the songs are not well received because he has set such a high standard for himself. Incidentally, in my own opinion, ARR is the best thing to happen to Indian music after R.D. Burman. I would also like to admit that I am an unabashed fan of ARR's music but not to the point of praising bad music. If PP's songs had been composed by Deva or some other newcomer, I would have probably given a pass rating. But from ARR? That is a strict no-no

Its is becoming clear day by day that our South India Whiz kid is losing interest in South Indian movies. Otherwise why should we get such poor music from him.. Look at Lagaan for instance.. how wonderful was the music.. I have a feeling that one of ARRs assistants might have composed music for PP.

chennaiweb reviewer.. the problem with the film press in India/TN is that the analysis of the movie or the music is very subjective. To put it bluntly the review is very 'amatuerish'. The only music review I take with any seriousness is from the Themusicmagazine.com website (especially the one by Suchitra Lata). Please take this as a suggestion, read the review in the link given a few posts above, do yourself a favor and model your reviews like that in future. Again a honest well meant suggestion.

PARTHALE PARAVASAM is good, pallavi of alage sugama and adhsaya thirumanam reminds few of old arr songs but the interlude of the first and the charanam of the latter are really good, manmadha masam is also a hit although it drags too much in the middle
overall rating 85%

For all those who complain abt KBs way of finishing line of his movies - all I can say is that they lack KBs distingushed differnt thinking. KB has been a class apart from the normal. So when u view KB, stop thinking of normal same 'old pullicha muvu' stuff. He is different and light years ahead of normal routine thinking directors of tamil film junk industry.

Neutral Fan:
Thanks for correcting my typo "Neu"tral Fan. I'll take care next time.
And needless to say, I accept defeat. ARR is fading into oblivion as its so very clear from the countdown available in TFM page. What better yardstick to judge the standing of a composer?
I also agree, as per the countdown, that YSR, IR, BW and VS are much more talented and are ruling the roost.

Being in Anti ARR camp, I should confess, He is very good in making people eat thier own words.
Caution before using words like fading, oblivion etc..It would be harder to swallow later!.
