HI,
One of the main cause of Raja going down is he began to mix is personal politics with music.
Singers like Arul mozi were given chances when there were better singers.
Also he had little problems with studios - sound engineers - which forced him to switch to studios which did not have much facilities.
This as affected his scoring ability a little.
He failed to concentrate and learn new techs around him.
I wish Raja changes his attitude and removes the too much ego he has and starts composing pretty good numbers.
Raja's downfall attributes only to his personal attitude not because of inablity to score music..
No one can deny the fact he is a great composer... (only composer in INDIA to write score without using any instruments like Beethoven)

Hello what is going on here?First of all do not compare that boy (ARR) with this great genius.
He is a successful music director. But I will say he has not achieved anything great in music.(Hey do not mind those awards given by idiots).Simply some good songs, more copies. In fact he is a good sound engineer. His music touches nerves and sometimes brain. But Raja's music enters brain and touches heart.100's of Raja's songs are everlasting. He has done almost all kind of music.
carnatic,Western,western classic
melody, folk, kajal, hindustani and possible combinations of all these.
In my opinion ARR doesn't deserve what he has got.and Raja deserves more than he has got.Nothing but time.

Who says arunmozhi is not a good singer ? That way,If personal reasons are being mentioned , why did GVPrakash sing so many songs for rahman? He's just his nephew . Shahul hameed & suresh peters are (were) his long time friends, nothing more .
Raja is the reason for so many singers for being what they are today- He has introduced &given us so many good singers including Chitra, Swarnalatha,Minmini ,Krishnachandran,Unnimenon,Mano,Jency,Uma ramanan.None of them were "one song wonders" like the types that ARR introduces these days .Many others like Yesudas,SPB,S Janaki , PJayachandran & scores of others have recorded their best tamil songs under the maestro Illayaraja.
Illayaraja is certainly not down . Stories of ego & politics are gossip. It's just that Illayaraja has reached a stage where he has outgown his music & feels constrained with the routine film themes .

Hi all,
Success/poularity of a MD in TFW is purely by:
i) Music listeners
ii) Equation with Producers,directors,
super heroes and media.
I believe Raaja lost(pl. note 'lost', not failed)
his stake from both of the above mentioned groups.
Nowadays the second point has a gross influence
on the first point, to a greater extend. Now that
we have to agree that IR does not have good
rapport with producers, directors and media. So
the good thing in his music are not projected by
the media, he is not given good/due chances by the
film makers. He is consistently pulled down by
the film world personnel. The reasons may be
anything, be it due to IRs ego or otherwise.
But ultimately he does not enjoy the support of
the film makers. So nowadays he seldom gets
chance.
Many people will agree with me that IR is one of
those elite film MDs who did fair justice to the
classical music especially carnatic. I can tell
this proudly because one of the renowned critique
P.V.Subramaniam alias 'Subbudu' has mentioned this.
'Subbudu' is one of the best critique of the
carnatic music world. He does not bother whomever
be the presenter. His criticism on 'carnatic
pitamaha' semmangudi srinivasa iyer is well know
in the carnatic world. When persons of subbudu's
calibre comment on IR's carnatic composition then
we should agree that IR is premier in music
composition. Also his fusion albums, his devotional
albums, his symphony, symphonic bgm for hey ram
stand as testimony that IR is,was, will be a versatile
MD and even now his music has not dried out.
But todays listeners' trend has changed. Due to
media and exposure present generation of music
listener(generation here not necessarily mean age
group). Their taste has changed, they slowly or
rapidly move from hard core classical touch music
to some beat type of songs (I'm not going to say
whether its good or bad). But IR has his own
limitation. He cannot do injustice to classical
form of music by distoring its form (as said by
subbudu in one interview). Hence he cannot
cater to the present music listening generation's
taste. ARR and other MDs dont have these kind of
limitations. I'm not blaming ARR for this. See
its something like this, some say language like
tamil, english etc have well laid grammar so if
one speaks those language they should follow the
grammar (IR is of this type). While some say
that language is just for communication so no
need to follow any hardcore rules as long as things
to be conveyed is conveyed(ARR and others mostly
fall in this category).
Hence the result is IR is no more a "POPULAR"
music director. But still IR's product are those
Agmark sealed pure songs which the present
mindset music listners may not appreciate.
please bear with me for this lengthy message.

siva:
MSV has composed music for many films in 80s. As far as I know he did last for one of the SAC film either 'neethiku thandanai' or 'Rajanadai' which came in 1989. It is not 2 or 3 years. 12 or 13 years. SO Let us wait and see till 2003/2004.

hallo siva,
MSV 1976-la kaaNama pOnaar-nu edhai vechu solreenga? It's true Raja was on the rise, but still MSV, even though slowly losing his hold of the fort(e?), gave a lot of good songs. In fact, his good songs after IR's arrival will EASILY OUTNUMER AND OUTLAST the good numbers IR gave after ARR's arrival! FYI, I can't think of a good composition by IR after 'Chinna Thambi' in the 90's. Simply there was no food for taste in IR's music in the 90's (and in my opinion most of 80's, but that's a different story) even though some of his songs became popular! Can you name a classic like "kanaa kaaNum kaNgaL mella" which MSV gave in 1982, that IR gave in the 90's? I don't see any!
I haven't heard 'Bharathi' yet, so will hold on to my opinion until then.
