i'm india chennai kiru.
i am not officially researching,
just for my private 'thEdals'
i'll go about your doubt.
"kanavu kaanum vaazhkkai yaavum
kalaindhu poagum koalanggaL
thuduppu kooda baaram endru
karayai thEdum oadanggaL"
the song occurs as echo of a widow's thought soon after she became one. she has 2 kids and suddenly the family becomes a burden. family and relationships are essential but when they become a burden you have no other go. its compared with the 'thuduppu' becoming a burden for 'oadam' but yet it seeks the shore.
the much weighter part of the song is its first saranam
"piRakkinRa boathE
irakkinRa sEdhi
irukkiradhenbadhu meythaanE
aasaigaL enna
aaNavam enna
uRavugaL enbadhum poydhaanE
udambu enbadhu
unmayil enna
kanavugaL vaanggum paidhaanE"
so simply so many things in life is being defined here.
the tune was from a movie called 'upkar' i heard balu mahendra asked IR to use that tune for the movie.

i think i agree with kiru that VM can traverse the emotional dimension as good as any other. For example, I think the lyrics for the song 'Enge Enathu Kavithai' (especially the saranam) in the movie KKKK are brilliant in bringing out the emotions....

Both are great! It is like comparing Tendulkar and Don Bradman. KKD is a legend and VM is the Hero of TFM Lyrics today.

I think lyrics in those days were mostly pre-written (i.e., before the music). These days the lyricist has to fit his words to the tunes.

Nandhini,
While I appreciate your rasanai on VM's songs, I pity your ignorance on great K. Kannadasan has written innumerable songs on 'yadhaaratha' life applicable to all the times. Many poets today are using the same with different words, including VM.
'Meen seththaa karuvaadu
nee setthaa verunkoodu
kannadaasan sonnathammaa'
This is written by VM.
'kaalidhaasan kannadhaasan kavithai nee'
This is written by Vaali.
All lyricists have shown their due reverence and respect to the immortal poet great K many times.
Before you come to a conclusion that VM is better, go find some great K songs, understand them and come back.
I don't mean to be rude on you, and I apologize if I sounded so.
Regards,
LP

I just wanted to point out that VM and Vaali have shown their respect towards Kannadasan with the example songs I quoted. I didn't mean to say these songs were copied from Kannadasan.

Hi LP,
I agree each and every words of Nandini.
I have listened 75% of Kannadasan songs.
And also the Vairamuthu songs. The depth in the
meaning and the "vaarthai jaalam" is comparatively
good with Vairamuthu. "Viliyil vilunthu Idayam
nulainthu uyiril kalantha urave" No one can
describe the love like this. Just listen the song
"oora therinjikitten Ulagam purinjikitten". What
a great thought? Listen also the song "Anthi malai
poligirathu". Really great! The following words may make anger somebody. But this is the truth. Vairamuthu is equal to 10 Kannadasans.

Vairamuthu is kind of 'varnanani' kavinjar.
He likes to write lines like
"Vaana magal naanukiral
Veru udai poonukiral"
He describes about change of sky's color in the evening beautifully in the song.. Idhu oru ponmalai pozhudu.. But for sheer imagination...
take the following lines of KKD
"Oruvarin thudippinile vizaivadhu kavithaiyada
Iruvarin thudippinile vizaivadhu mazhalayiada"
from the song chinna chinna kannanukku is a testimony how he could conjure up impressive lyrics with simple words. In terms of expressing most complex feelings of human beings into songs, KKD stays way above VM. VM is more like varnanani kavinjar. He has given as many craps as he has given good ones. VM is not equal to Naa kamarasan, Muthulingam let alone KKD. Parthiban your knowledge about KKD's song looks very poor.
For each and every song of VM i can come up with a better song from KKD. MGR lived by his lines. MGR's success largely depended on KKD.

Vairamuthu is good. But none can match Kannadhasan.
I am yet to come across a song that can match "Maranaththai Enni kakangidum Vijaya" and "ullaththil Nalla Ullam" songs from Karnan.
Vaali is also equally great if not greater than VM. That being the case no need to compare VM with KD.
I like so many songs of Vairamuthu incuding the songs mentioned in the above postings. But Kanna dhasan is Kannadhasan.

Why don't you also compare their "lows"? I am sure nobody (especially KD) has written crap like
50 KG Tajmahaal, Flight il vandha nandhavanam...
neRuppai thinnaal inikka vEndum, adharkku pEr thaan kaadhal....
and other silly lyrics.

Vairamuthu's capabilities are very limited. All he can do is write love songs with repeated 'varnanigaL'. His songs would never reach the illiterates. He never has messages for the society in his songs. As a matter of fact he doesn't bother to spoil society by writing songs like the one below where he teaches violence.
'thirupaachi aruvaaLa theettikittu vaadaa vaada' (Movie: Kadal pookkaL)
He doesn't mind to write meaningless and cheap songs like the one below just for the sake of money.
'figaru figaru thaan nee sooppar figaru thaan' (Movie: Baatsha)
I just can't digest his wild imagination where hero proudly tells that he will drink the dirty water falling from her loved one, thinking that as 'theertham'. What a crap!!! (Movie: Jeans)
Listen to the 'KaalangaLil avaL vasantham' song of Kannadhasan where the hero describes the heroine. What a wonderful comparison of nature with a woman. (Movie: Paava mannippu)
Where as Kannadhasan is a versatile poet reached by all sections of the people. Even an illiterate person like a rickshaw puller can understand every line of his songs. He never goes vulgar in his love songs. He has written hundreds of love songs, philosophical songs that will help us how to live, devotional songs for all religions and what not..

LP,
Good that you brought about these. We dont even have to get into morality issues like how much is vulgar etc.. Even if you discuss from the lirerary stand point many of his songs are crap. (lot of his old songs when he came to TFM are good though) The one you mentioned in jeans song I got very irritated hearing it
"Davadhai ...theerthan endre nan kudippen". The lyrics are stupid, lousy and low taste.
I know he has given lots of beautiful songs. I would expect person of his stature who is established, earned well and have a reputation would try to give better songs than writing pharmacy, dippu dippu....

Hi unmai,
Can u compare any of the kannadasan song
with the following vairamuthu song? "Poomalai
vaangi vanthan pookal illaye". In the saranam,
"Kayil kinnam pidithuvitaan"
"Inikkinra vishathirkul irangivitaan"
"Raagam thaalam maranthuvitaan"
"Rasigarin kadidathai kilithuvitaan"
"kadarkarai engum manalveliyil kathali kaaladi
thedinan"
"Moganam paadum velaiyilum sinduvin raagam
paadinaan" (In sindbairavi, heroin's name was sindu)
"vidiyenum oonjalil aadinaan"
"than mugame thaan maranthan".........like this.
how beutifully he shows the position of the drunken hero!
listen the next saranam,
"netru sabathangal eduthuvitaan"
"kudikkinra koppayai udaithuvitaan"
"indru aval mugam ninaithuvitaan"
"sabathathai avan indru udaithuvitaan"
"esaikoru kuyilenru peraduthaan"
"irumalaithaan indru suram pirithaan"
"manithargal iruppathai maranthuvitaan"
"maanathin maanathai vaangivitaan"
"bothayin paathaiyil pogiraan"........
Now tell me friend, any comparision is there for
this song? This is just a single example. I can
point out so many nice songs of vairamuthu. Are u
ready?
Happy Independence day!
JAI HIND!
Parthi.

Hi Parthiban,
I appreciate you on analyzing VM's songs line by line. Assuming that this is a 'kaadhal pirvin sOgam+yEkkam+iyalaamai', following song of our immortal kavignar Kannadhasan's song came to my mind. (Movie: Vasantha MaaLigai, Year 1972)
kudippadharku oru manam irundhaal
avaLai marandhu vidalaam - avaLai
marappadharku oru manam irundhaal
kudiththu vidalam - aanaal
iruppadhoa oru manam...naan enna seyvaen?
irandu manam vaendum
iraivanidam kaettaen
ninaiththu vaada onru
marandhu vaazha onru
(irandu)
iravum pagalum irandaanaal
inbam thunbam irandaanaal
uravum pirivum irandaanaal
ullam onru poadhaadhae!
(irandu)
kangaLin dhandanai kaatchi vazhi
kaatchiyin dhandanai kaadhal vazhi
kaadhalin dhandanai kadavuL vazhi
kadavuLaith thandikka enna vazhi?
(irandu)
Look at the kavithai nayam with simplicity and the punch in the meaning!! Thousands of people still remember the whole song even after 30 years. There are lots of other songs for this kind of situation available if you want...

Parthi:
In the song you have mentioned the lines "....maanaththin maanaththai vaangi vittaan" is a standard Vairamuththu algorithm. Just like "kaadhal ennai kaadhalikka villai" (in thakita thadhimi thakita thadhimi).
Vairamuththu tries to shock the listeners with non-traditional ubamaana ubamEyangaL. Some times one says, "umm! interesting" on other occasions one says,"What the heck was he thinking?".
