STS,
This sort of comparison makes me really laughing.
The comparison of Alaipauthey with Tirunelvi, Kanukul nilavu also makes me LAUGHING.
Even now, you havent admitted that your remarks "Is IRs recent hits like Hey Ram, Kannukkul Nilavu, Tirunelveli make ARR nervous?!?" were in bad taste!! Can you admit these statements werent warranted? And as aruvi pointed out, you are trying to come up with lame excuses, and give advice to all saying "take it easy", "be sportive" etc. And you need to take these advice yourself before preaching others. People in glass houses cant throw stones.

If you are reading this, then my vedikkai time has begun! And I hope to God you are not biting on a kaaramaana molaga while reading this! :)
As for Alaipayuthey, I think its a decent album and with songs like Pachai Nirame and Snehidhane (The opening lines are a treat!), I guess the album will become a hit(duh!). I only wish Sadhana Sargam had doen some homework on her Tamil, so that Vairamuthu's weird lyrics became more intelligible, and we could crucify him for one more song! What is that crazy man thinking? Most of 'em songs sound like prose set to tune, rather than poetry! I guess you have to grant ARR a few more points for Alaipayuthey just because he 'tuned' such lyrics!

Sashi,
I read your review of "AlaiPayuthe" which was interesting but your scoring pattern seems to be paradoxical in the sense that you have rated "Alaipayuthe" as 8/10 ,which deserved no rating as its an adaptation of a classical song with absolutely nothing altered except a synth beat follows the song. Does the song deserves 8/10. "Uthukaadu" would have cried foul if he had seen your review.

Shashi,
Your reviews are making my musical eyes open wider (if I had one :)). One thing that I seem to be missing in ARR is the flow in the melody. Even the seemingly un-connected interludes seem to be nicely connected to the main melody.
Am I really missing it or is it that I have become a IR-fanatic without my knowledge :) ??
So I am suggesting that you rate the songs on the strength of the melody also. It seems to be a ambigous thing at first but probably with your musical knowledge you could come up with some parameter to rate it.
Thanks for your contribution to this forum.

I would render 7/10 for AP because of the musical arrangement. Melody is there but not up to what the trio-combination has supplied is in BOMBAY! Anyway, let us wish goodluck to Maniratnam and ARR for their latest effort!

alaipayuthe is a some what a disappointment.i expect something in the range of "bombay" or "dilse" but in this film except one or two songs others sounds like deva's.

Hi Anand & Kiru
Thanks for your comments. I will try to explain.
Regarding rating the song Alaipayuthey as 8/10. IMO this wonderful song of Uthukaadu has been used as such. There is no alteration to the melody.
Even in carnatic music, rhythm accompaniment is very subjective and within the same 'tala' cycle a mridangist/ghatam player chooses his own patterns so as to improve the 'total experience' of the song/composition. Sometimes, it does happen that the percussionist gets carried away and instead of accompanying, tries to lead or at least co-dominate. For example--Zakir Hussain, the excellent percussionist he is, at times tends to get carried away!
What ARR has used in Alaipayuthe song is a simple rhythm (pattern is actually quite indigenous) played on western sounding rhythm machine. Overall, the rhythm continues to remain in the background so as to accompany and not be intrusive to the melody.
My exact comments-"Otherwise the song has been quite aesthetically adorned by ARR without spoiling the innate beauty of this song." I have tried to say that this song has innate beauty (attributable to Uthukaadu) and that ARR has by keeping it simple bought out the sweetness of the composition.
How did I rate the song? Well, a songs' rating in my mind is the level of enjoyment you obtain when listening to it. In that sense, this song rates at a 8/10. Although I try to score the composers imagination in all original compositions, in this particular case, obviously I did not try to score ARR's imagination. Also, in the overall album rating, which is an average of the ratings of the songs, I dropped out this song. Interestingly, in this case the album rating is 8/10 as well, it does not matter if this song is included in the overall album rating (just a coincidence).
Regarding Kiru's comments-I did not understand your statements completely. Yes, I do give importance to the melodic content of a song, but interludes are also taken into account (with respect to imagination, instrument usage, correlation with the melody and mood of the song etc). If this does not answer your questions, could you please restate them

Correction
I should have said--ARR by keeping it simple brings out the sweetness of Uthukaadu's composition.

Alai Payuthey is bound to be a big hit for ARR.
Shashi,
Your review of the AP songs made for a good reading although I had my own doubts regarding your ratings. I think I'll buy your argument above on the way you have judged the various songs.
Keep up the good work.

The reviewer does not seem to obviously be vey knowledgeable about who composed the carnatic song. He has attributed it to Muthuswaami Dhikshithar.
