SNaga,
HMVs reduction in sale price is a discount for the fans of ARR. It is an honour to ARR by the company for the fans who appreciate ARR for the wide range of voices he uses (Name any singer, north or south, east or west - they will have atleast two hits with ARR) and that is the secret of his success. He has broken the monotony of the same old base voices and female voices and introduced singers and used all old singers. Hollywood and Britain will very soon see Tamil voices like Seerkazhi, Deepan & Suresh along with international voices. HMV is an international company which knows to make the profit and make the customers profitable too. They are intelligent and have made enough. Thenali cassete is "their pride and neighbours envy"! Ha , Ha.

It is a great pity that ARR has gone so cheap that poeple will buy his cassettes only if the price is reduced.
And what? Surprised that a song from 12ka4 resembles Inji Idudupazhaga? That suprises me..
Only get surprised when a song from ARR sounds original.

Enna 'dignified' answer! As for as I know, discount is given to boost the sale of the products if not selling otherwise. Puthu Puthu Arthangal. Keele vizhunthalum meesaiyil man ottalai.

Hi ab:
I think Rs. 55 for Indian standard is quite a big money. People will defintely think of spending so much for something worthless. MD's and cassette companies should not utilize the opportunity to suck consumers.
- From: ALI AHMED (@ 203.197.136.166)
on: Sat Jan 20 12:54:56 EST 2001
Most of the tamil cassettes are priced at Rs 35 only.Tenali, initially sold as premium cassette at 50 and after two months sold like other cassettes. This was done for Mudhalvan also..After three months Tenali along with another hit film of HMV will come to market for 35 rupees...Only it is sold for RS 20 people have to cry.....No need to shed crocodile tears now...
Now I got the answer that Khamoshiyan and Ingi...are same classical music Raagam...Ahmed

Ali Ahmed:
You are saying that they sell the cassettes for Rs. 50 only first 2-3 months. Let me explain you something.
I feel that the purchasing trend of people follows a certain trend . Cine people do all sorts of things to advertise about the release of cassettes and major part of cassete sales will be in the first few weeks. Then based on the music performance (hit, publicity etc..) either the trend continues for some more time or steeply falls down. This is the time where the price of the cassettes will be reduced. If the trend continues to go high then high cassette price will be there for a couple of months more and then falls. There is a reason for my crocodile tears. All the cassette companies seek high profit from every movie released. There is nothing wrong in that. My point is even with Rs. 35, they can make very good profit with more no. copies sold. The reason for high price in first few months is certainly to suck consumers, no doubt. Selling a cassette for Rs. 55 is 57% higher than normal price (ie Rs. 35).

One thing that should logically affect CD and cassette sales is Internet piracy through Napster and other sites. As of now, it has not hit the Indian scene that much because internet connection speeds are abysmally poor in India. As the connection speeds improve over time, the cassette and CD sales in my opinion will be affected. I am no fan of the record companies. And I am for prices being reduced drastically and song-wise sale available. But if the record companies don't do that soon, I am afraid at some point the artist is liable to lose. We all know how everyone would like to have things free. That is if Internet piracy rules are not revised. For example I know for a fact that a number of people I know will never buy 12Ka4 because they have the MP3 version. Nothing directly to do with this thread, but I guess it affects all of commercial music.

KSS:
Internet piracy percentage possible with only who is having a pc with internet connexion and CD R/W facility. I would say easily that atleast 70% of tamil population living in TN don't have that facility. This is more likely possible only people who live outside india. Moreover, most of the MP3 sites have either been shut or having restrictions in easy access. However, I don't think this is the reason for high cassette price. The casette companies should have an agreement within themselves and draw a price baseline among themselves.

FliFlo,
I don't know about India, I do know for a fact that sales in US would be more if internet piracy was checked and prices of CD are slashed from say $10 to about $4 to5. And, really. these "MP3 sites" are not really down. Prime example : "Napster". Again, I am not justifying the high prices of cassettes. Just concerned about the artists in the Industry. Again, for piracy, you dont exactly need a CD writer. You just need a PC.
