hi mux,
thanks for your reply. i too share your view that carnatic concert reviews tend to be stale and repetitive and needs to be more objective. NMN used to do it. subbudu's reviews are aimed at satisfying those who want to see artistes shred to pieces and hence also not objective.
leave carnatic music reviews and look at film reviews or cassette reviews. they are mundane without any reflection on the artiste's highlights or shortcomings. i feel it is a edhiroli of our nation's psyche.
can you point me to the location of krishna's reviews of darbar and nayaki? incidentally, i could not understand the reference to unnal mudiyum thambi in this context. are you referring to gemini's insistence of a particular mode or pani?
bye for now

ravi,
i am surprised! you allow a topic like "non-filmy albums of ilayaraja" to be discussed in the first place and then take a deep sigh when people discuss ragams and attitudes of carnatic musicians and reviewers (i presume that caused the resigned tone).
another interesting sidelight is that we have topics like maniratnam's dil se which is neither tamil nor music.

badri: edaththa koduththa madatha pidungippEnnu sonna enna seyyarathu. If I allow a little leeway in discussing TFM artists in other languages it doesn't mean that you should launch into a discussion on state of carnatic music and such.

Hi Badri,
I am right now replying to you from a library computer. (I just moved a job and yet to get a computer account set up). I have all the bookmarks in a floppy and once I get it I'll let you know.
As for unnal mudiyum thambi - it is just the Gemini's rigidity and difficulty in accepting the song in Suddha Dhanyasi openly, when he feels it is good in a private conversation.

hai.
two days before i got one cassette composed by IR- titled 'vedha gaanam' it consists of many sanskrit vedic songs sung by IR , an 8 year old girl & some others. Echo has released the cassette. don't miss it ! it is excellent & gives a lot of peace to mind when we are in a tensed mood.
thank u

ir had this collabaration with many artist and called it merai jaan hindustan
as far as i can recall among these people were his son kr babasegal hari haran.... etc
of course it was a mega flop
he was trying to use ARR vm as a base

junior:
I strongly believe that Ilaiyaraaja has nothing
to do with the success of the album 'merai jaan
hindustan'.It was someother person's idea to have different artist's songs in a single album
and Ilaiyaraaja composed only one song as a part
of it. he was trying to use ARR vm as a base - This is not at all true.

I have mentioned this in a separate thread - using IR as a Music Director for just Tamil Film Music is an overkill. The guy has too much creativity in him to be enjoyed only by the Tamil people.
I think he should switch to doing something like what Yanni does. Mostly instrumental - one or two with lyrics or voice.
Actually, I have some albums of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (from Pakistan) where he also does something like this. You could find his CDs in any store in US/Canada. I wish IR also could be in that category.

hi!!! i am new to this page.
i am an ardent fan of IR
and have bought with me
some 150 cassettes exclusively by him to US.
about his non film albums,
i think they carry the same
thread as his film albums do. for example, in "how to name it", the emotions perceptible in the album can mix with the BGM of any film. i think it was taken as the bgm of veedu or sandhya raagam. similarly, his nothing but wind has a chirpy nature and IR has been very careful not to let hindustani
come in between. if only he
had done it in the latest
orchestration, yanni ellam,
thundai kaanom thuniyai
kaanom than!

balaji,
HTNI was used in Veedu.
One of the pieces was used in Apoorva sagotharargal.

Balaji & Kiruba: i fully agree with you. Tamil film is not challenging enough for IR to show his full creativity. He has to free himself from the constraints imposed by TF and do more albums like HTNI and NBW.
Wish some one tells IR all the things we wish him to do.

Ramanan,
i think the perspective of IR is totally different.
as madhan told in AV some time back, each composer
has 3 stages. one stage when he starts and gives what
others ask for too. next one when he is in command
and delivers from his creativity keeping in mind
the audience' taste. the last stage is when he is
fully into music, and creates for no one but himself.
like a calm sea. IR is that stage while ARR is now
moving from 1st to 2nd. in many interviews with IR,
he says he does not categorise anything as good or
bad music. he does not seem to bother about his
popularity as well. he is a genius and that is enough.
that is why he is contented with TFM even though it
is not enough fodder for him.
is kaalapaani's BGM going to come as a non-film album?
does anyone have any ideas?

I mentioned this in another thread. I dont have any problems/do welcome foreign music (if done well) in TFM. But IR alone is capable of taking our music to the rest of the world. I wish he starts doing some album or something which will get marketed worldwide. I dont think he is contended with TFM. I think if somebody approaches him with this idea he will surely agree. I wish I had the resources to start a label.
(BTW, Ramanan - did you buy a good music system ??what happened to that thread I dont see it active. I want TFM listeners to move into quality audio equipment).
What is INDIA 24hrs - an instrumental album by IR ? If so I would love to lay hands (ears) on it.

In recent Kalki, it was mentioned that IR's music plays a significant role, in a 2 minute programme about the role of Indian Woman in the success of India. The title is "MariyAdhai Pookkal" it seems. This project was done by two ladies whose photo taken with IR is also printed in that page.
Anybody in TN has heard about that? Eager to listen to that.

This two minute piece sounds too good. I have heard it just twice! Got good transitions/layered violins and moves quite fast unlike India 24 hours! May be he is preparing the jantha for his symphony?
