Such controversies, if anything, only expose
our biases and prejuidices, not Begum's or
Swamy's.
There is no bias or prejudice involved here. Well, let me ask you this, if this had happened in an Islamic country where, say a Hindu or a Christian had demanded that Islamic songs not be shown in such and such a programme, would things have been the same ?
No one is asking ARR's mama (or ammi jaan) to pray to Lord Shiva or even listen to Sankarabharanam if she does'nt want to. But asking portions of the clippings to be cut off and calling it offensive are well, blasphemical enough !
And for those who refuse to take credence (for love of his music or for love of secularism), do not blame it on the journalist who did the story !

Basically I dont know what we want to achive here.
"ARR is secular or non-secular"
is arr a leader of a nation.
I wonder who told our "good natured" reporter about this incident. for a min assume we agree to this story,
1. She would not call everyone around and make a loud announcement.
2. she would put it directly to her son.
Was there a hidden mic somewhere which picked up this mother-son intitmate chat, come on give us a break.
When we are able to think so much on this,
Arr a very good PR person - who knows to promote himself much better than any t.d.h in the world - will think 10000 times ;for doing such an act.
How many of us belived when a reporter from Vin Nayagan told that symphony was not composed at all.
https://newtfmpage.com/forum/24703.15:38:06.html
go thru these reactions,we see similar things here.
There were "n" number of similar yellow articles like this on msv-tkr fight or ir-vm fight or KJY not being let into a temple etc...did we care.
I kindly request you all to stop, This is nothing to do with his music and not worth a discussion here.

VS,
I agree with much of your first post.
Regarding your second, things wouldn't be the same in an Islamic country since by virtue of being a conditionally Islamic country all bets of secularism are waived. That's not a fair comparison to this issue. And please don't even think of assuming that I condone religious rule.
As a lover of music in general and even more so as a lover of secularism, I insist on blaming the journalist for an irresponsible article that reeks of mischief.

fan,
I'm in total agreement with your wise statements. But, public perception is cultivated through articles such as this, I'm here, I happen to have the time to write against it and so I have.
Inaction maybe best with your frame of mind, well with your frame of mind, it would be hard to corrupt it. But the average reader doesn't scrutinize the stuff he/she reads. For a casual reader to digest this as truth is unfair to the subject. If this ends up an empty uproar, so be it, but slanderers shouldn't have the last say.

fan,
To dub ARR as secular or non-secular on the basis of this particular article is not the intent of the discussions here, and I'm pretty sure no one (in the DF atleast) would have jumped to a conclusion of that sort. The intent of the arguments is to put incidents like these in perspectives against the backdrop of related issues. As Udhaya has said, there are people who have the time to read the article and write what they have to say after giving it some thought. I see no harm there.
And no one is calling ARR a leader of a nation, either. An icon in the eyes of many, an epitome of success, a ray of hope to the starry-eyed hopefuls at Kodambakkam and Bollywood - yes. And importantly, someone who has captured the imagination of a lot of youngsters of today. That is why, I feel it becomes important for celebrities like him to keep a secular facade in public (atleast).
Was there a hidden mic somewhere which picked up this mother-son intitmate chat,
Now come on, do you expect every journalist who does a story to do a Manoj Prabhakar act on every subject ? And also do use some discretion on the credibility of the agency involved here, would you ? Well, if you choose to equate a Vin Nayagan to a site such as IndiaInfo, I have not much to say there.

Udhaya,
I see your point - the context of an Islamic country would'nt exactly fit in here, but the point I was trying to make there was that I did'nt see any hint of intolerance or bias towards the minority community in this issue. If only, it highlights the fact that some great devotional songs in HFM were given by an all-Muslim team of artistes.

Viswa's views are strongly supported.
ARR's family's despicable actions are strongly
deplored.
This action is an affront to the sensibilities of a certain section of the population who incidentally form the majority.
As an artiste of repute, who grew to his current stature with the support and encouragement of fans spanning religions and languages, such actions are unbecoming and nothing short of a public apology will heel the wound.
The article also brings to light certain other things (selective censorship of devotional songs at Kanchana's studios e.g.) and I feel Mr. Swamy
has done a public service by bringing to light these unsavory happenings. This is truly a remarkable work of journalism by him and he deserves to be commended. To all those who are prepared to shrug this matter off, I think it is stark escapism to do so. The sceptics are strongly encouraged to investigate and ascertain the facts themselves before dismissing what could be real facts.

Mr.Swamy, and one more friend
Accepted!
so what you want people to do. ?
"Stop hearing arr songs" ?. Please tell us,
how many so called "public" know about/use this "kanchana" studios, if they dont let you record devotional songs, you can always use x,y,z studios,
Like you have every right to write about anything in your website in the name of freedom of speech
they have some rules,
We are not here to decide it is right or wrong,
hey build a studio and put a rule that you will record only mono tracks, who stops you...
Simply tell me How does this affect a comman fan who only knows arr's music what is the so called public service here,.
being a journalist you have simply nullified the "Vin Nayagan" report, a comman music fan like me nullified your report.
IMHO:
Mr.Swamy has done a public service by bringing to light these unsavory happenings
It only a service to the affected parties.
also this is your side of the story....
As an oridnary fan I am bound to think like this.

Srikanth: I think you are reading more into VS's response (and similar responses echoing VS's opinion). This issue is just like the "role model" issues surrounding the sports players constanty debated in the U.S.
Assuming that the news item is a fact, Nobody is questioning the way ARR, his mom, or his dog's methods of practice of religion. However, with freedom comes responsibility and some liability. Just like One has the freedom of a certain action, others have the freedom of reaction to it (Yep! I copied it from Newton:-))
Cassette buying is your prerogative. Me getting copies of those songs from you (on pink cassettes) is my prerogative:-)
eden: I think all the views expressed here (so far on this issue) have been fairly objective. Nobody has said thet is "more right" or "more wrong" because it has been done by ARR.

ARR has also said in interviews that he loves Inji iduppazhagaa (IR), Annamalai Annamalai (Deva), and Edhoa Oru Paattu (SAR). He has also stated T.Rajendar as one of his influences so I'm sure he likes a few of that guy's tunes as well.

On a lighter note, was T.Rajendar an inspiration for ARR on his ex-hair style?? :-)
