Friends,
"FRIENDS' is really a super movie with excellent Camera Work and Fantastic songs/BGM from IR. Really an enjoyable movie in this new year begining. I wish this year be an IR year as 2000. Hey Ram, Bharathy, Kannukkul Nilavu, Karisal Kaatu Poovae, Kakkai Siraginilae, Friends - all are excellent in quality as well as in cassete sales.

cram :
I saw that in the 2nd page...but he has completely avoided spking about IR in the first page in his references to the 70s and 80s. That is gross injustice.

hei dignity;
it is surprising to see two totally conflicting opinions about Friends. Friends, as per me and as per most of others here is a wonderful album. People who say it be a crap or whatever, somehow don't like IR for some reason. 50:50, kumudam rating is not bad. They have also mentioned "Thendral Varum" Song is wonderful. Chennai online says "Poongatre Song" is excellent. As per Raga website the "Rukku Rukku' Song stands top. Many fans here like "Manjal Poosum' song. Collectively if you see, every song has attracted different sets of people. That is something great which we have not seen in many other movies. Kumudam is the odd one out in making that statement. Rest every other magazine says (chennai online, tamil cinema, indiainfo..etc) that friends songs are good. Majority wins. You guys by arguing friends songs are not good, that too with us, are not going to win a single heart..So take rest...
"We pray Almighty to save Dir. Siddiq &co for a better luck next time, as he has paid already for IR obsession"
Poor guy. Siddiq after seeing the IR's music in Friends has publicly announced that he is going to use IR for all his next movies. Take a big breathe....

The majority is always never right...say "by popular taste"...if songs by Deva, SA Rajkumar can become hits...it only means that majority of the people are not into sophisticated techno music yet and still like old sounding sounds and songs....

So this means that if IR can give some better fare...it is naturally liked by the majority but it doesn't mean they are excellent...the "Rukku Rukku" song has got poor lyrics..it is more malayalam sounding...

TV and MP are melodious...better than what Deva or SA Rajkumar can give but still very in the early-90 bracket of his style...nothing remarkable.

cosmician,
i read that crap article a long time back-i thought it was something not worth writing about-why work yourself into a state over others'"expert " views-it is a well known fact that when these northies write about "indian"music they mean hindi music-for them that is synonymous with the entire range of film music.ignore that link-it is not worth the wear and tear on your keyboard trying to act wounded and hurt.the world does not go dark if the cat closes its eyes.
another thing i have always wondered -this is actually a digression-will AR rehman be as popular if his nam had been something like, say ,ramanathan or rajkumar or deva?even maragadhamani changed his name to kreem (!) or something when he did music for a few hindi films.
again, ignore the tunnel vision of whoever wrote that silly article.

Cosmician,
Forgive me. Song become hit for its tune, not necessarily for lyrics. If your logic of 'majority of people liking does not mean excellent song' holds good, then ARR did not give good songs so for. Will you agree? I would also say majority of the people are fed up with the techno music (or atleast fed up with recycles!)

AR Rehman is popular right now...the majority look upto the trendsetters...AR has set the trend because of his innovations ..IR is not setting trends...that is my bone of contention...

Everybody
The stuff on Sysindia is not an article. It is a survey. It is what the fact is. I am happy, IR fants are happy that his album is in the top selling list. It is the fact that IR trend is continuing to rule.

Hey a real surprise. IR walks away with the screen videocon award for best background score for heyram(hindhi). Surprise is the fact that the fun loving guys in the north who always admire copy cats has first time rewarded an orginal genius. Well done genius.

Cosmician, You seem to apply different rules for different MDs. To me Thenaali follows the same pattern as Roja (Excessive sounds over voice). Do you see any other trend in ARR's music friend?

Dear cosmician,
I agree that ARR has set trends in sound engineering and selection of voices.
But the point to note is, he do not keep setting trends. He continues with the trend which he set in Roja.
Now coming to IR, you are saying that IR has not set any trend! I differ in that. When he took over the tamil field, he set the trend of folk songs in movies. It was welcome. Then he set the trend of hot songs with Janaki and that was also appreciated. He made fusion with all kinds of music. He set the trend that film MDs can also satisfy classical experts. It is from his time only that MDs got recognition of having photos in posters. It is from his time that movies start coming solly depending MDs(Otherwise who will see Ramarajan, Rajkiran movies). The list can go on and on.
What he is not doing is, he is not setting any new trend now. Also he is adamant with his ideology.(Look at the difference between IR and ARR. IR had problem with Vairamuthu and he maintains it even in the present situation. He refused Bharathi Raajas project because of this. But whereas ARR is ready to accept him back because his two movies Rhythm and Thenali did not do well than his earlier movies. Just for comparison no offense. I don't say which is right).
For setting trend, he should get the right platform. He had tussle with all good directors Balachander, Maniratnam, etc and hence was not getting good platform for experimentation and setting trends. Consider the fact that until his last movies with these directors, he was doing good and tried to innovate. Now he is getting good people like pentamedia, director Siddiq etc. We have to see how he is fairing in those movies. Kamalhaasan is one who knows what IR is capable of doing, but then he himself is in difficult situation after Hey Ram!

Good points, Prasad...Thanks..:-)
I meant that IR is not setting trends now...I still hope he will start doing something futuristic adding Ambient-techno sounds to his "Tamil Folk+Carnatic+Western Classical" fusion. YSR is doing that..."Dheena" songs - "Nee Illai Endral" and "Sollamal thatti.." were really good...
