Guys, I thought of starting this thread for quite some time , it will be nice if everybody contributes a decent openion, without attacking any one particular MD over the other, particularly IR vs ARR. Please give your openions about the MDs who did good job with very few TFM yet reasonably OK job, ex.. Shivaji Raja, Hamsaleka, Mr. Kreem ...sorrryyyy Maragadamani, Raveendran from Kerala,.
You can avoid the ones like K Bagyaraj etc.. (God.. Isn't it pathetic tamil makkal have to put up with this kind of nonsense sometimes, rather most of the times).
We can restrict to probably 1970's onwards, unless a few really want to discuss about KVM, MSV-TKR, etc.
Personally I am a diehard HC IR fan ( Thanks to IR and his immortal music, which always helps me to be attached to my every memories which I had during most of my high school, college, and now professional life), however I listen to other good MD's music to be specific...ARR, KR, YSR and now HJ ( He is good .. believe me, after quite some time I heard little bit of good BGM in some places in MINNALE, the movie although is another crap anyway).
My personal top three debut albums are (with some bias from my addiction to IR music) Annakili, Roja and Oru thali raagam. I struggle to decide between Roja and Annakili to be number on edebut album ever in TFM. I am not writing the criteria why I think they are best, but we can start another thread on that.
Again, please no personal attacks, no individual attacks on any single MD, (I never mind if somebody attacks Deva.....just kidding, although I hate to be in a place where there is a Deva song playing, just my personal stuff.. don't tell me then I can never walk in Tamil Nadu, I am from Karnataka, so no much exposure to his crap...)
Have great discussion guys, it will be good if you write why on e particular album is best the other.
Prabhu Das

"Dhevendran is a highly talented Malayalam MD who is a thick pal of KJY"
You are referring to Devarajan, who composed lot of aiyappan songs. 'thiruppARkkadalil paLLi koNdAyE' is probably his most famous song.
This dude Devendran is IR's nephew. He did couple of movies after 'vEdham pudhidhu'. I can remember 'maNNukkuL vairam' and 'ganam kOrtaar avargaLE'. The latter had an awesome number, 'kAdhal kavidhai pAda'.
My peronal feeling is that he started with typical IR style orchestration and was slowly moving to different one. aanaal dhideernu abscond aagivittaar.

Kupps, was balabarathy's debut thalaivaasal, or was it amaravathy ? If amaravathy came 1st, then that should also qualify for discussion in this thread, just for the 'taj mahal thevai illai' song alone. That was a song that would have done even IR proud.
Talking of trend setting, it was Adityan's 'Amaran' that started the techno music revolution in tfm. ARR might have taken the technological aspects like recording, mixing and sound engineering to new heights, but the credit for pioneering the trend should go to adityan.
eden, the topic is 'BEST DEBUT movie by any MD', not 'debut movie by THE BEST MD' !
My vote is for YSR's Aravinthan, especially for the BGM. I couldnt believe it was done by a 15 yr old ! It was unfortunate for tfm that the child prodigy made his debut in such a disgusting movie.

Good point!! And Balabharathy's first movie was indeed thalaivaasal. He had couple of terrific songs in that movie too.

Thalaivaasal is the first movie of Balabharathy., Had two good songs - Janaki's 'Adhikaalaik kaatRe Nillu' and SPB, Chitra Duet 'Unnaith thotta thendRal indRu'., I think all others are gaana songs.

Somebody mentioned "Ganaam Courtaar Avargalle" above, I used to listen to the songs all the time when i was a kid. I loved the tittle song, so it was Dhevendran that did the music huh? and NagaS, sorry to inform you...I lost in the Gameshow I told you about :) The host of the game show insisted that MSV's first movie after the split up is "Anbe Vaa".
Can you confirm this?
p.s Don't worry, the question didn't come out. We were just discussing about it :)

yaaro,
oru siru thiruththam...
AO is not the *last* movie V-R tuned. It might be the last movie they tuned before the seperated for first time..
remember their re-union movie, a remake in tamizh of malayaaLam Chitram(i think), acted by Sathyaraaj and Roja (sorry i forgot the film name). i think this film came sometimes during early 90s.

Hmm, I have to take defensive mode now.,
Let me check with some video shops here in Bangalore for the movie's video cassette, If I get it, I will confirm who is the MD for 1000-il oruvan., OKya ?
Kupps,
I think the movie you are talking about is 'Engirunthoo vanthaan'., I think that was the only movie the duo did after their re-union., (They did a couple of TV Serials).,
I would say it was a pretty ordinary album - except for one 'Engirunthoo vanthaan' sung well by SPB., It also had a song 'Sriraman seethaikkuththaan' which looked like a copy of IR's 'Rakkammaa kaiyath thattu ;-)

AO MD is MSV-TKR thaan. I heard, TKR left in the middle and MSV finished. The next movie for MSV was "Petralthaan Pillaiya". This is the first movie after MSV-TKR seperation. But this was not the first movie for MSV. MSV's first movie was "Jenova" somewhere in early 50s. Then he did some more movies. In the movie PANAM, MSV and TKR started working together.

Hope you guys come to a FINAL conclusion. Man, this stuff sure is confusing! I have another nomination for best debut album. Phil & Jerry's "Thotta Chinunggi". First time I heard Hariharan's rendition of "Maname...Thotta" I was completely TAKEN!
Then there was that song "Ilenthendraal Veesum" that was sung seperately by Jesudass, Mano, and another person (I can't seem to identify who the singer is though I listened repeteadly - sounds like TL Maharajan but can't be positively hundred percent sure)
Other songs from the movie were mediocre (like Ramya Ramya, Pep Pepsi Cola & the tribute song to Rajni - Namma Rajni Varaar.
I would give my vote to Phil & Jerry any day, for their effor in this movie if only for the "Maname Thotta" song. Whatever happened to them?

What happened to Phil and Jerry? Well, quite simply, they entered into a contract in 1998 for the world-wide release of two/three albums, financed by Global-Innovative Consulting Pty Ltd and they absconded with the funds. To this date (May 2005), they have not released the albums. And they remain in default of their obligations under their contract.
In addition, as at the present time, Jerry is in default of a personal loan to the value of over AUD$31,000. He took off with the loan funds, not repaying a single dollar. They both refuse to return correspondence. They changed their phone numbers to make it more difficult to contact them. And they left their investors in the red for the amount of AUD$38,200.00 in total between them.
In terms of personal and professional credibility and integrity, I would rate them a zero. If you don't want to reward people who want to rip other people off for their own gain, I recommend you do NOT buy any of Phil and Jerry's music. Phil & Jerry are frauds and racketeers.

What about Bobby? The Music Director who scored for "Sollamalae". He also won the TN State Award for that film. Wonder why he never really took off anywhere from there. The 2 songs - "Solladhe" (Hariharan & Chithra) and "Sollu sollu" (Chithra) are very nice. I heard the "Sollu Sollu" song is the first of its kind for its set to Pancha kandam (sorry if I am using the wrong term. Its 5 swarams in one beat against the usual 4 swarams in a beat).
There was one more MD by name Soundaryan. He was appreciated for his "originality". The MD(s) of "Thotta Chinungi". Maran, as you said, the music of "Manamae... thotta chinungi..." was awesome. I like the rendition by Chithra more.
Even S.A.Rajkumar (Chinna poovae mella paesu? or is it Mansukkul mathaappu?), Adithyan (Amaran), Sirpi (I think its a Vikraman movie starring Mohini and Anand Babu - Naan pesa ninaipathellaam??) all made good starts. Later Sirpi began lifting Arabic tunes - outright without even bothering to alter them slightly!
V.S.Narasimhan is another impressive MD who never made it to the limelight. His music in KB's teleserial "Rail Sneham" was amazing esp. the song "Andha veenaikku theriyaadhu..." (separately by Chithra and Jesudas).
