Friends, I am just being swept away once again after a long gap of 6 years by the consummate and enhanting musical compositions of Ilaiyaraja. Here, I want to list 10 of the best instrumental pieces I have heard from across most genres of music. This way, I am sure many more new listeners can appreciate the absolute greatness of IR's compositions. I always felt that IR, who is perhaps the rarest of the rare and the most perfect creative artiste of all, needs some more spreading the gospel by people like me to enable many more people to be aware of, and enjoy this great man's creations. Hope this thread gets some input of any nature, but please focus only on interludes of IR and others as well.

more updates on the alternative top 10:
V.Narasimhan's terrific guitar interludes laced with middle Eastern rhythms and strings in "Poomedaiyoa Ponveenaiyoa Neeroadaiyoa Aruviyoa" from 1000 Pookkal Malarattum.
Great overall arrangement and orchestration by Deva in "Vanna Nilavae" from "Ninaiththaen Vandhaai" and "Nagumoa" from "Arunaachalam".
Excellent blend of various Western and Eastern instruments in the songs, "Nadodip Paattu" from "Harichandra" and "Tholaivinilae Vaanam" from "Koadeeswaran" by Agosh.
Pleasant keyboards throughout the song "Manamae Thottaachchinungithaanae" from "Thottaachchinungi" by Philip and Jerry.
Wonderful orchestral violins accompanied by subtle rhythms in "Chinnach Chinna Maegam" from "Kaatrukkenna Veli" by Sivaji Raja.
Exciting fast-paced mix of accordian, bongos, flute and strings in "Nee Poagum Idamellaam Naanum Varuvaen" by K.V. Mahadevan.
Classic 60s rock'n roll drum beats with flute and guitar leading the way in "Marandhae Poachchu Romba Naal Aachchu" by M.S.Viswanathan.
Another irresistable 60's dance music foray by M.S.Viswanathan came in the song "Raja Raja Srirajan" where bongos, accordion and violin blended beautifully.

I have been seeing this a lot in differnt threads.
Why the songs created by MSV-TKR, TKR is never credited. I may be wrong, but my understanding is, TKR was responsible for interlueds and arrangements for most of their songs together.
Just hoping that you agree with me here :-))

hari,
One only works from one's memory, as far as I remember it was an MSV song, if it did come out during the MSV-TR era, then I stand corrected. I'm fully aware of TR's mastery of violin compositions, for instance the background pieces in the song "Aththaan En Aththaan" were phenomenal.
After all, a public forum is for sharing information and checking for its accuracy.

udayha,
I have no problem, if it is not intentional. But I came across lot of intentional omission in 'creativity of MSV thread'?. It is sad that TKR never made big as MSV, after they seperated. But that should not be the reason to conclude that TKR contribution is very minimal in their success. My father used to say that TKR is very talented and his off-work habits pulled him down. I dont know, how much that is true, but I can say that I enjoyed the interludes in MSV-TKR songs more than later day MSV songs.
BTW, raja raja srirajan from the movie kadhalika neramillai. I think, Music is by MSV-TKR.

one of the best interludes (non-IR that is) i have heard is the first one in 'Indha punnagai enna vilai'. pure jazz. another classic one, this time rock'n'roll, is in 'ennai theriyumaaaaa'. oooohhhhhhh!!!!!killllllller, the way the elctric guitar goes.

Hari, Raja Raja Sriraajan is from 'Ooty varai uravu', scored by MSV. TKR is known as a great violinist and talented but the fact is the base melody and the interlude movements were always composed by MSV (with exceptions). That is the reason, the industry big-wigs could afford to separate the two. I am no blind personality worshipper, but this is a fact. But TKR is well known for for the immortal whistle piece in 'vantha NaaL muthal Intha NaaL varai' in paavamannippu and in general, is knowledge of carnatic music.

Music at its Most Sublime form -
The caressing prelude, the intoxicating pallavi, the most complex layering of violins in the interludes and the final whistle - can any song match this timeless beauty from IR ?
"Kanavil midhakkum, idhayam muzhudhum, oru raagam, uruvaagum, dhinandhorum yennathhin inbathhiley, yengengum vannangalae" - from Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal.

SL,
Do you know for the fact that TKR's contribution is just being arranger most of the time. That would be very awful. To me, I always found the
interludes in MSV-TKR is very settled than MSV solos. I have not heard any TKR solo songs for a long time, so I could not comment, how it was different.
I also think, MSV is very good in PR than TKR. He developed a good rapport with lyricists ( KD, since he was the one created the tunes most of time) and with actors and producers. That might be the main reason, why he excelled in getting lot of projects, after he seperated. But since you have talked to MSV before, you can shed some light on this. But still I can not believe that TKR was just the arranger most of time.

When I spoke to him, I did not encroach upon this topic at all! Actually, delving too much into this might be improper and I might end up sounding too harsh on the talented TKR. I have spoken to a some of their colleagues too and some famous singers and they say that MSV composed the tune ALL THE TIME and composed the BGM too. TKR might have played a role in polishing the BGM further. I have no doubts about TKR's talents however, he had some decent songs in Moondrezhuthu , thangachurangam and the ultimate marakka mudiyuma. MSV took off in a grand style after the separation scoring music for MGR's Nadodi, kalangarai viLakkam , no looking back since then. So, that's it. For further info, you could E-mail me and spare the rest of DF'ers from the details.

some how i think we think alike. 'intha punnagai enna vilai' from iruvar is my fav ARR song.( till i heard the recent 'sangamam'). we also think alike in mal'm movies. you're the maan, cram.
the instrumental bits in 'iyarkai ennum'(spb's early tamil), '1000 nilave vaa'(adimai penn), that vani jayaram song in 'ilamai oonjaladukirathu', 'raajavin parvai' from anbe vaa, that haunting 'aarirari aarirari aarariraro' from the song 'maanikka thottil engirukka, mannavan mattum angirukka'(mgr, kr vijaya film)......
agree cram...!

cram... just seen yr exhaustive list in 1000 IR hits and am very upset that you did not mention 'unakena thaane ennerama, naanum kaaththirunthen, rahasiyam pesa manamiruku, rathiri neram nilavinile'. how could you?
but you escape by including 'kaadellam pichchi poovu, karaiyellam shenpaka poo, naade malar...' and 'kanne kalai maane'. I usually switch the lights off and sing .....these songs.
you're mr.film man cram..you're the man.

yo maaan, ur the main maan, raaaajuuu! about "unakkena thaane", haven't heard it too many times, so it didn't come to mind readily. and about thinking alike, well.. on sangamam, yes. terrific album, glad to see a good ARR album after a long while, but. i'm not sure which song u are referring to iruvar, coz that's not what i had in mind. the song i was referring to is from an old MGR film, but hey.. i love all of iruvar's songs, especially asha bhosle's vennila vennila. ARR's best to date.
ciao for now, buddy
catch ya later. keep watching the IR-2000 thread.

The interludes - especially a small (Shenai?) bit in "Iravum Nilavum VaLarattumE" from KarNan has never failed to move me whenever I hear it!
I love the interludes in "NaaLaam NaaLaam" from Kadhalikka Neramillai for their unbelievable pace and continuity!
The interlude where it starts off like a KalyaaNa Nadhaswaram and beautifully blends with the main tune of the song in "Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen" from AvaLukkendru Oru Manam!
Of IR's the interludes I love are
"Germaniyin SendhEn MalarE" (for its tempO),
"SugamO Ayiram" (which has excellent playing by VeeNa) and
OndrOdu OndraanOm AnbOdu": I heard and admired it just recently!

hai
I would like to add my favourite songs.
1) Mandram Vantha Thendralukku manjam vara
point to be noted is the sacsophone that follows the song
2) Indirarum Chandirarum - Avatharam
pure western classic tune for a folk singer ( Naser ). Only the genius of IR can compose such a wonderful song
