Hi,
Sorry Mr.L.Pathamanathan,
I did not mean to offend you.
Because Usatad Zakir and his father Ustad Allha raka are considered the worlds best tabla player today!.
It is a pity, being the best tabla player yourself , you have not heard about Zakir and Allha Raka. It is like saying I know tamil film music ,but I dont know who is Ilayaraja!...
I was not able to digest to call him just a hindi artist...
he has performed many live shows with L.Shanker, L.Subramaniyam in many countries around the world.
He plays some of best complicated tabla pieces...
Try getting some L.Shanker album you will know what I mean.
Thanks

Srikanth:
Since when did morphing become a Director's job ? I thought there were always special effects guys who did stuff like this ! Maya Machindra is the SILLIEST song that I have seen (help ! I am not commenting about the music, only the picturization !:-)). In case your memory needs some jogging, morphing was first introduced to Indians courtesy the Kawasaki Bajaj Ad., which showed a KB Motorcyle being morphed into a Cheetah. Black & White was released well after this and there were even some claims that MJ had copied from the KB ad. ! But I think we are seriously digressing from the topic, to bring it back on track...does a Big Banner have much to do with the success of present MDs ? And will IR's sagging career be resurrected by scoring music for a couple of Big Banners ?

MSK,
I dont know what is wrong in morphing?. Anyday
it is better than seeing some poker faced -
white dressed angles circling hero and heroine or seeing ramarajan lip sync to some rustic recycled tune of IR.
Srinath,
>Then again, current public taste is not exactly >a true measure of IR's music :-)
Sure I agree with you. I said already that, I dont
have any problem in the quality of IR songs, but only in the way it sounds.
Again I wanted to point out this, people always
down grade ARR comparing his BGM with IR and when the comparison is with other MDS like MSV, no one bother to mention how
bad MSV and others sucked in BGM.
IMO, BGM in indian music was almost non-existant, until IR arrived. It is his
unique contribution to the film world, where no
one could ever come near to him. So why can we just compare the songs aspect only, with
out mentioning about BGM.

mr.easwaran hariharan,
iam just curious to know how many songs of raamaraajan are recycled as u have mentioned.
also what is wrong in a song having a rustic tune? it is only because of this type of attitude that u have that IR's music is not appreciated and we have been forced to listen to crap from ARR and deva. youngsters nowadays think that listening to ARR's western style of music is some sort of a fashion and listening to IR's music is something
very lowly and not fashionable. Iam a youngster myself and i would anyday prefer ramarajan's songs than shankar's.iam not talking about the picturisation just the songs.just using hi-tech graphics does not make picturisation great.look how balumahendra(en iniya pon nilaave) and mahendran ( paruvame puthiya paaadal) have picturised songs.how natural and beautiful it is to see a small baby running in the middle of the song 'paruvame puthiya paadal'.
the picturisation was CLASSIC and the song was a CLASSIC. that's how picturisation should be. maaya machindra is nothing compared to the above and the song itself is just noise .

There is an underlying assumption here that
IR's Career is sagging. What is the basis of
this suggestion? If it is just based on the
No. of Movies per year, then ARR had this right
from beginning(May be outta his volition ). Big Banners ditching IR infact is a boon in disguise, All these so called Big Banners have eaten dust in the recent past and I am glad IR did not have anything to do with them. The quality of his Music has not suffered because he did not work with these Big Shots. This whole whining about
Glorious Eighties and Miserable Nineties
is hardly worth any discussion. HE is doing what
HE always did and does. Making Music. He does not
care if it is Shankar or SanGili MuruGan.

The picturisation of Maya Machindra was a total copy of Michael Jackson's 'Another Time' (the name I am not sure). The music video stars Eddie Murphy as the pharoah and also Magic Johnson.
And anyway, morphing was done way way back by vittalAchAryA in his stupid Jagan Mohini type movies. Shankar just upgraded the technology.

vijay,
My original intention was not any thing related
to picturaisation, and I was simply responding to
the some of the posts.
For me, I dont want to label any music IR, ARR and
others. I hear the songs, which I like.I am also IR fan and like his rustic songs too. Except karakattakaran and ponngi varum kaveri, how many
ramarajan films, We have good original songs. Most
of the songs, interludes sound same. It is the fact, and I dont want to conceal it, just bcos it
is IR. If you ask me, I will take maya machindra any day better than those songs.
It is my taste, I dont want to comment, whether your taste is better or mine. If you feel ARR, deva songs are crap, I have every right to feel that IR songs for ramarajan are even worse.
To me, Sankar is trying different things in the ongs. I accpet that 'paruvema','andhi malai' are good picturaised songs. Sankar is doing it in a different way. What is wrong, if he follows MTV style. If IR can be praised for following western classical style of music, why not ARR and sankar for going towards current pop culture. After all both IR and ARR are importing things from outside. Normally I resist saying some thing like this before, but frankly after seeing mindless IR
glorification, I felt, I wanted to jump in and say
few words. There are music, much better music outside IR, and if you are not seeing it, it is not our problem.

mr.hariharan,
IR is not praised for following western style of music.IR is praised for his creativity and ingenuity.he can do folk, carnatic, classical etc. and he can also do western. also regarding ramaraajan's songs other than the films that u have mentioned there are enga ooru paatukaran, his earliest hit, pudhupaatu with some foottapping songs like 'nethu orudhara' and ooru vittu orru vandhu.there are also several other lesser known movies with great songs.
'shenbhagamae' by asha bhonsle is a good example of how north indian singers should be used effectively.this should be a lesson to present day MD's who churn out a lot of crap with udit and hari.i challenge that ARR or deva or for that matter any one else cannot compose songs that could suit an actor like raamaraajan.ARR CANNOT COMPOSE RUSTIC TUNES WITH 'THAMIZH MANN' FLAVOUR.
a MD who asks his songers to imitate gloria estefan or mariah carrey cannot penetrate tamil hearts.
whether u agree or not it is a fact that IR composed some of his best for ramaraajan and the actor survived in the industry for this very reason.how else can u explain the success of a film like karagaatakaaran or enga ooru paatukaaran?

vijay,
What ever U said about IR may be true, but
to me his music is not only one. period.
I think U did not get my point. Here our taste
differs completely, there is no way we can
arrive at a common ground.
Senbegame is a good song, but still asha accent was not good. Have u got a chance to listen 'vennileve vennileve' from MK. It is also good song sung by sadna sargam, north indian singer.

my example of 'shenbhagame' was to just bring out the fact that IR had the guts to experiment with singers of asha's caliber in the middle eighties, that too in a ramaraajan's film.people go gaga over ARR introducing new singers from the north but IR had done all this much before.kavitha krishnamurthy was excellent in 'muthirai ippodhu' song in uzhaipaali.i agree that tastes differ . but still shenbhagame was a popularly liked song at that time.regarding the accent even sadhana sargama's accent was like that of a kid trying to learn tamil.lot of mazhalai accent.u can't help it.they cannot completely change the accent.IR used these singers only in selected songs, but now u see all these sargams and narayanans from the north singing every other song in a film, killing tamil completely.even i do not appreciate the fact that IR is using hariharan for his songs.
also i never said that following MTV style is wrong as u have mentioned.iam only saying that high tech graphics is not necessary for good picturisation which is very much true.shankar is the one who introduced this funda that only if crores and crores are spent and u make a big budget movie will the film run.he gave more importance to dance and songs than the story and in the end he ended up with the biggest flop of the summer.ditto for manirathnam.shankar brought down the standard of tamil films to that of telugu films ,giving importance to just dances and songs.
IMO the picturisation of 'ennulle ennulle' from valli or 'thendral vandhu theendum' from avathaaram is much better than any of shankar's songs.
