Hi!
I just want to know if any music directors have a fad for a particular Ragam. The one MD who comes to my mind is ARR who uses Kapi,Ananda Bhairavi,Shankarabharanam and the like in almost all his films.

RG,
You're right, IR's variery is amazing:
Each one of the following songs in Gowri Manohari sounds different:
1. Dhoorathil Naan Kanda Un Mukham (Nizhalgal)
2. Thaazhamboove Kannurangu (?)
3. Pon VAnam Panneer Thoovudu Inneram (Indru Nee NAlai NAn)... one of my most favorite SJ numbers!!!!!!
4. PAdum VAnambAdi (NAn PAdum PAdal)
5. Kanna VaruvAya (Manadhil Urudi Vendum)
6. SOlaip Poovil MAlai Thendral (Anbulla Rajnikant?)

There's another superb song 'AdhikAlai Kadhire AlangAra Chilaye' from the film 'Urudhi Mozhi' set to Gowri Manohari.
Sandhana Kaatre from 'Thanikkattu RAja' is also set to Gowri Manohari except for a small portion in the stanzas where it drifts for a while and returns to Gowri Manohari.

There is something amazing about the way ragas are handled in TFM. Pentatonic ragas like Mohanam, Sudhda dhanyasi and madhyamavathi are presented in different ways by various MDs. But as far as melakartha ragas are concerned (Gowri Manohari, Simhendra Madhyamam etc.) they seem to face some hurdle and are not able to show some variety (though mathematically this should be easier). Is there any reason for this? The exception to this rule is of course IR's handling of Keeravani. But even his charukesi, dharmavathy, panthuvarali could perhaps be a bit different each time.
Probably the MDs are trying to stick to the raga lakshanas of the melakartha ragas and so desist from playing around with the scales, but this seems a bit illogical in the TFM context :-)
Something off-tangent : no MD today seems to bring out the classical 'swarupa' of panthuvarali. All the songs set to this raga are basically erotic and sensuous (kamavardhini :-) ) which is, of course, NOT a wrong portrayal of the raga. But no song seems to bring out the 'gambeera' of the song as in classical compositions like 'rama namamu palkave', 'saara megani' and 'sundara tara dheham'. Apart from the song 'Ezhu swarangaLukkuL' and 'pattup pudavai kattip pArungO' (IR's music, SPB in some recent movie) I cannot think of any such 'classical' tunes in TFM. ARR's 'hai rAmA yE kyA huA', IR's 'enna varam vENdum', some song in 'swarnamukhi' etc. all fall into the sensuous category. Amy comments?

Sitaram,
IMHO the best Gowri Manohari in TFM is 'pAttum nAnE, bAvamum nAnE' in thiruviLaiyAdal. All other Gowri Manoharis (even IR's :-( ) sound somewhat similar to me, and only this song stands out - probably because it is more classical than others.

" IR has at least made each gowrimanohari of his sound different "
"All other Gowri Manoharis (even IR's :-( ) sound somewhat similar to me"
Kuzhapparaeengalae sir!!!
(NOM;-)) )
As a sidelight, could you enlighten me if Kuyilae kuyilae from Kathal oviyam has anything to do with
panthuvarali- because I once thought Hai rama suspiciously resembled this song.

Raj,
you are right, that did sound confusing :-) What I wanted to say was that most of IR's Gowrimanoharis are indeed different from each other. But at some point of the song you realise they are related to some other song of his in gowrimanohari. For ex., when I am listening to thangach changili, I suddenly drift to 'kaNNan nALai, mAlai vELai'. In other words, similarities in IR's Gowrimanoharis are not that easy to detect, though there are some :-)
The song semmInE semmInE by IR is a very good Gowrimanohari (might probably upload this onto my homepage in the near future)
Regards
G.Ramaswamy
P.S. I have not been able to classify kuyilE kuilE under any ragam. Was too confusing for me :-(

Ramaswamy,
I think Kuyile Kuyile from Kaadhal Oviyam is close to Hemavati. What's your observation?
