ippO mattum enna vaazuthu ?
already ARR is scoring for a very minimal number of songs, IR is scoring indifferently..

I saw Sridhar's (sound engineer in Panchattan Record Inn) name in the HR title list (in the end of the movie). May BB IR used ARR's facalities or someone do the sound engineering task using those..?

Time: `Good' (with one great song and three other good songs)
Kannukkul Nilavu: `Above average' (with at least three good songs out of which one is very melodious)
Hey Ram: `Good' (with some experiments and min. 3 good songs ; supposedly symphonistic BGM, I'm yet to hear)
Thirunelveli: `Average' (with one lovely song and a couple of not bad folk numbers)
Sethu: `great BGM as per reviews' and big commercial hit film... (I didn't have the chance to hear / see...)
MS: I just listed the recent performance of the 20+yr old IR (i.e. in the TFM field, where mediocrity is the rule and not exception) and IMHO, this can hardly be called `indifference'. What more can we expect from him for TFM, in its current state, with no good quality directors to work with him?

I HAVE A LOT TO SAY ABOUT THE RECORDING QUALITY OF IR'S HEY RAM. i feel a lot of us may not be able to do so and those with mini combos are definetly out. i have repeatedly said the bgm is fantastic but those having a good system should be able to listen to the songs and they will definetly know the recording was for mini combos - highish out put to cream over the flaws . virtualy the songs were screaming and if your hear it loud when you want to hear the nuances and dynamics your ears would start to bleed!! it is no where near any audiophile recording and at its best to be listened in the car. most indiaN MUSIC DIRECTORS CARE TWO HOODS FOR THE RECORDING QUALITY ANYWAY THEY ALWAYS MAKE FOR THE MASSES. was hey ram made for the masses!!?

Ariff,
I am waiting for the CD with the BGM. So I cannot corroborate your experience. But I beleive you. IRs recording has been very bad. When he uses electronic percussion the track is recorded directly I think. This is not the case with ARR, I suspect, he adds some kind of filters, to add space/soften before mixing it in. So I feel mixing is where ARR makes a difference even though other people (IR, Deva, Anu Malik) have similar, comparable equipment. I can believe you if you suspect that the treble has been boosted up. Do they do this for the CDs too ?
But I like Guru (malayalam) and INDIA 24hrs.

The 'ThirunelvEli siimaiyilE' song is absolutely lovely..oozing native flavor (if you ignore that many instruments are played over synth keyboards :)). And man IR's voice adds to the touch !! This is singing real tamil .. not some snobbish accented tamil.

While listning to `nee pArtha' this morning I was just reminded of the greater `inji induppazhagi' song and yearned to hear SJ again1 Oh what heights she would have taken `nee pArtha' (that too if Kamal sings in place of Hariharan with her)...sigh:-(

Hi Shashi,
Why dont u review "Hey Ram","Kannukul Nilavu" and "Thirunelveyli". We may get some good technical points about the songs.
Thanks.

Somebodies comparing ARR Alaipaayuthey with IR Hey Ram, Kandukkul Nilavu and Thirunelveli, it is ridiculous to compare ARR exordinary work with IR deficient quality.

Hei Mr.Mottai&Kottai,
(Pl. I Apologise Mr.Vijanth)
I could't digest u comparing IR with ARR.
IR has proved that he can give Folk,Carnatic,Hindustani,Western Classical and has
done lot of experimental Fusions over the period of 20+ years.Has done extradinarily in his BGM's.
To name a few, listen to the fusions of
1)How to name it? Western & Carnatic
2)Indranum Chandranum - Avadharam - Symphony type western classical with a theru Koothu folk.
3)Ninnukori varnam -thyagaraja krithy in western
style.
4)Kattril enthan geetham - Carnatic & Hindustani Mix.
5)Kamadev - Hei Ram - Northern Folk to Southern Folk then to Western classical
many many more....
while ARR is just struggling for tunes just after
some 25 films IR is still coming out with variety
of tunes even after 780 films, just b'cause he has
such a depth in music knowledge.
while ARR is just depending on rhythem based songs
to attract youngsters, IR is hunting for melodies
to give a satisfaction to real music lovers.
I agree ARR has made Tamil Film Industry proud with his innovative ideas but at the same time he has lot & lot to learn from IR.
ARR has a knack of creating a big hit out of an ordinary tune..For eg.'Thangapathakkathin melay'
as 'Enna Vilay Azagay'. and many more. But he has no veriety in tunes. Inface 'sutthy sutthy vandhenga' is just a replica of 'Pacchai kiligal tholodu'..and 'Kuchi Kuchi rakkamma' as a jodi film song. just think.
In one of the interview in Filmfare 3 yrs ago, ARR
himself has admitted that MD he liked the most in India is IRaja.
Then why to make comments on IR's calibre.
If Raja Aur Rahman come together as Anand Milind or Lakshmikanth Pyarelal, then it will be a real treat to hear IR's 1970-80 hits remixed in ARR's innovative sound style. Just assume that songs like 'Oru kili uruguthu Urimiyil Pazhaguthu ' remixed in ARR panchann inn with a melody beat of ARR .... & getting released in a hindi movie.. I am sure that it will be a great hit.
Be proud that we have got two great musicians of different styles and stop ugly comments.
Mr.Mottai & Mr.Kottai pl post yr comments after hearing to some lovely old hits of IR.
(thank u Vijanth for supporting me.)
