Maniratnam who revolutionized tamil movies with his best efforts like Mounaragam, Nayakan, Agninatchathram, Iruvar, Roja etc. recently come out with Kannathil Muthamittal.
Everybody Nayagan was a lift from God Father and he used some of the scenes from GF for his agninatchathram as well.
I thought Kannathil Muthamittal is his original thought alas its inspired from "Secrets and Lies"
British movie.

Another thing i noticed with kamal and mani is,
whenever they target a wider audience, though at times they may be commercially successful, they end up in making a junk movie.
mouna ragam/Iruvar wud NEVER appeal to these stupid hindi movie goers !! The actual blame shud go to the directors who moulded their taste.
So this guy tries a dilse.....BOMBs big-time !!
Kamal tries an ALavandhAn - bombs !!
salangai oli or rajapArvai wud never be successful with these guys. Neither wud movies like muLLum malarum or udhirippookkaL.

i really don't understand you. you like alaipayathae (an entertainment, nothing more) and agni natchathram (an overhyped movie, hit because of songs), but you do not like km, which is a heart-moving picture about a child's trauma. after anjali, he has again touched this topic.
it is true that amudha sometimes overact (not always, her eyes act more than anything else). that is because of the dialogues, mr gave her. i accept that it is at times irritating. but, i feel you can forgive and forget such things. well, there are many such instances which you notice of course. even the girl's name amudha! apparently madhavan wrote at the end of the story 'aval azhukai amutha mayamaka olithathu'. athenna azhukai amautha mayamak olikkirathu?:)
front benchers may not appreciate it, but sensible persons should appreciate it.

Exactly.
A week before , on sunday, I saw KM in Devi. It was a house full show and also the 7 PM show was also houseful. But, Since I went just before the films start , I got only the row very near to the front benchers. I bought Rs. 30/- ticket.
It is one of the excellent movie I have ever seen in my life and every thing was perfect about that movie. The whole hall was silent and enjoying the gripping movie, barring few in the front benches. They were such a pain in the A** that, I wished I could chop off their heads in one shot then and there.
If you don't like gripping, show moving , near to life movies , don't go to KM. Atleast let those who like such movies enjoy that in silence.
This is a Humble request.

I agree with Common Friend. The film probably won't find any attraction with those that favour the likes of Alai Payudhey but it is exceptional. Although I personally feel that Mani should have stayed within the boundaries of the adoption issue and focus on the relations of the mother-daughter, the film is appealing for its quality of production.
As far as acting, the child was more than natural. The children in Anjali were unbelievable. This one is not and those people that say a kid running away is unrealistic won't argue the same way had it been an english film.
He still holds his originality when picturizing songs. In these days of nonsensical shootings abroad, he has given simple poetic picturizations for the songs that stay in the mind longer than those songs made for crores of rupees.

Whats wrong if Mani tackles a problem affecting a lot of people. Why should he stick to just the protagonists alone? Does America have the sole rights to tackle all problems in this world? Are they the only ones who can "supposedly" infect an alien ship with a virus and destroy it?

Common Friend,
I understand your pain. KM seems to be an issue. I saw this in newjersey. In a stupi stupid theatre. And I had irritating idiots sitting behind me and passing stupid comments.
Those kind of peopl are outriht stupid and I wish some just stripped them and flogged them in the road and showed it live on TV.
in my case though I was unfortunate enugh to loose my temper and shout at him.. and therefore a galatta ensued.
the same thing happened to my frnd in Calif..

kaushik,
u don't seem to understand what i'm trying to say...I said, in mani's movies the protagonist wil l give the solution which acc to me is IDIOTIC...Hollywood does it...so what ? doesn't mean these guys can do it !! Hollywood makes movies like taxi driver, shawshank redemption and the likes...If these guys take the +ves from HW, i welcome it.

Mani Ratnam is only making a movie . He isnt donning the role of a provider of a commonly accepted solution, a la the UN secy general :). I think he is free to give whatever solution to the problems he portrays..one can take it( Success of Roja, Bombay ) or leave it (Dil se , KM??? ). In the name of criticism , i think we all the cross the border somewhere and dictate our own terms/solutions to a creator . Is he/she not free to create a story that he likes ?
//..And I had irritating idiots sitting behind me and passing stupid comments. //
It is unfortunate this happened in the USA..I thought the movie itself was appreciated better in the US/UK than in Tamilnadu.

yeah! tell me about it.. My opinion of the new jersey crowd has considerably changed..
50-60 years back some sugar cane labourers were brought from UP and Bihar to guyana. they were considered to be rude and boorish by the locals then..
I think those sugar cane people were much better....
" theatre'la ithellam ethirpakka vendiyaathu thaan" was the lame ansswer the idiots could give.. yentha ooru sattathula athu yezhuthirukko..
I think Devi, Sathyam, Woodlands, Albert, Udhayam are the best theatres I have seen in this world.
Trichy's MAris , Nellai's PerinbaVilas, Kovai's Archana and Tanjore's Kamala may probably fit into this category.

Hollywood made Shawshank Redemption?? It was an out and out adaption of a master-piece of a Stephen King novella. Its the total opp. of a normal Hollywood film. If the protagonist doesnt solve the problem, he ceases to be the protagonist!!
