  I took a close listen to Meetaathai oru veenai this morning, I must admit, it's fresh and we haven't had a good classical based song from IR in ages and ages. Hariharan and Mahalakshmi have done a great job together and, as Veera says, the oldies are still the goldies, but this song does leave an impression, it's catchy and has good music. The other Hariharan song based on Kalyani is also very nice....As long as he doesn't sing too many songs, it looks like he's coming back.....
  
  I hope that IR produces the Malayalam standard of music for us tamilians, as the pop-fusion in TFM will die, but look at the Classical based songs, everyone knows, cherishes and remembers them, e.g. Sindhubairavhi songs....always an indelible impression on one's mind.

  meetAdha oru veeNai takes time to grow on you; unlike vAnathil irundhu piRandhu & vAnathu thAragaiyO which captivate you instantly.
  Is this a debut song for Mahalakshmi ? Never heard of her.
  
  As far as chinna kaNNan azhaikkiRan goes, I prefer the SJ version to the BMK version. IR took a lot of risk in the SJ version than the BMK version and it plays of spectacularly.

  One word about this newcomer Mahalakshmi.I was informed by a friend that this must be the Mahalakshmi Iyer from the program "Mere Awaz Suno"

  Let me say something (un)related to the topic. IR mentioned in one of his live programmes(most of you might know this)that 'Veedu varai uravu,Veedhi varai manaivi...', 'Pesuvathu kiliya illai pennarasu mozhiya' and 'Oh oh oh..mambazhathil vandu vasa malar chendu' are based on same tunes.Try to put the lyrics of one song in the tune of other two songs.
  
  Also, IMO the following songs are based on same tunes:
  
  a) 'Idayam oru koil.adthil udayam ...' and 'Andha mann, aungu chenrRa mann...'
  
  b) 'NaAn thedum javvanthi poo idhu' and 'Pada vanthatho ganam pavai nenjilo nanam''.

  Ilayaraja has really copied one song
  "Kanavu Kanum Vazhkai Yavum"-"Neengal Kettavai" from the Hindi song "Kasme Vaade"-"Upkaar"
  and there is another song too.
  The Pallavi bit in "Enna Desamo"
  is from the old "Kati Patang" number "Na Koi Umang

  With due respect to your musical awareness and appreciation for the fact that you are one of the few pro-ARR listeners to contribute to this forum,I have to point out what I feel are minor factual inaccuracies in what you said-

  But so has ARR.One only need visit his official website at http://www.arrahman.com to confirm this.He also namechecks MSV,RDB etc on a frequent basis.On a related note I think it bothers a lot of people that ARR doesnt make the customary obeisances to His Lordship Raja,but is there a law saying you should?Many people dont appreciate that ARR might have personal reasons for his silence on the Raja-issue,maybe he was maltreated by Raja during his session-keyboardist days,who knows?

  I know I'm never going to be able to convince people about this but these sample/beat similarities that you point out are atleast partly a result of the same synthesizers/sampler CDs being used around the world,as any music-lover hip to the world of modern-music production can attest to.Why Thillana,any Rahman song with weird vocals,you can be sure they're from some sampler CD that he has then tweaked and used.Eg.the vocal that kicks off Akkadu nanaga.If this bothers people or seems like "copying" well I can only say welcome to music-making today.
  
  Having said this,I must admit to being in awe of your intricate discussions of ragas and derivations thereof.

  Sreeni: Thanks for that, I guess I hadn't seen that site and the only information I get about ARR is from the web, as me reading of Tamil isn't so good - it's would take me hours to read an article, hence I tend to read the English ones and rely on hearsay from people who read and give me the info from Kumudam, e.t.c.   I also agree with you about the samples.... at the time I was thrilled at his use of Deep Forest, as I loved that album very much - having been brought up in Africa, I guess....It's very true about sampling, as you say, it's just that I felt that he should have acknowledged the sources on the albums, he follows a Western style when presenting the album covers, e.g. Thiruda Thiruda, where he gave the names of the chorus singers and the band members and in any Western stuff, they always do this. I wish our people would do the same, not only ARR, but all others, so that us music lovers can get hold of the originals and compare. This would be a really international move, as the presentation of covers and also the amount of information on them is rather vital for promoting our wonderful music at an international level.
  
  When "Fantasy" came out, I was enthralled by the song 'Andhi maalai kovil vandhen', which has been extracted by Thyagarajar Swami's Endharoma. This was the first song I heard in Sri Ragam, in a filmy fashion and I was really impressed, as he(whoever composed the song) ingeniously used the muktha swaras of the original krithi as the interludes. Now, I must say that I didn't look upon that as copying, I looked at it as a modern touch to a fantastic krithi(the 'podhu makkal' and youngsters get a great version of the Pancharatna Krithi, pure in ragam and they will hum it, hence their awareness increases, I hope. IR populararised a lot of krithis, e.g. Pavanaguru(Hamsandhi), in Mella thiranthadhu kathavu, Brovabharama(Hamsanatham), e.t.c. Look at how popular Alai paayuthe(Kanada) is.....Isn't that the aim of music? Please comment....Thanks,

  BTW : The Andhi malai song is not done by AR, this was a false news...it was released by one person without the permission.

  Songs in SriRagam : There are many MSV numbers.
  Sri ramam sri devi from Manal Kaiyaru - I will give you a list soon. Msv has done more light music with ragas. Do you know the raga of Namuru singaari in Ninaithale Inikum... Hindolem
  (I think Brovabharama is set to Bhahudari - you have mentioned it as hamsanatham!)
  
  (If you guy have midi capabilities I have done a similar fusion for Yenna Thavam Seidanai for a fashion show.. done with western BG scores. I still have it on my hard disk I will put on RJ's midi site.)

  As I said, 'whoever composed the song' for Andhi maalai.....I heard that ARR sued for them claiming it was his composition, but he was in the band when it was composed.
  
  Please send me the list of Sri Ragam songs, I haven't heard any others....Please could you tell me if I can hear these on the web anywhere?
  
  I didn't understand the connatation of "Namuru singaari in Ninaithale Inikum... Hindolem " - Are you trying to clarify the Ragam of this song? If so, I don't know it, please try the Ragam thread. There are many experts like Hari who know practically all types of songs.
  
  By the way, MSV was way before my time, IR started off composing when I was born....I've not heard too amny MSV numbers, except for my Dad's collection.
  
  The Enna Thavam fusion sounds great. What instruments did you use? Do you like Kafi Ragam? Please give me the URL for the site. Thanks in advance.
