very interesting. Bhupen Hazarika's on Ilayaraaja!
Do you think any of today’s composers have it in them to carry forward the tradition of film music initiated by people like you and Hemant Kumar?
Well there’s AR Rahman. People become immediately entranced by whatever he composes. Rahman is a phenomenon. He’s young and talented. And he has his fingers on the pulse of the young generation. Illayaraja too is a great composer. Like Salil Chowdhury he knows both Western and Indian musical styles. Rahman too belonged to that group until he was reduced to a consumer product. I remember once I went to Hyderabad after Rudaali was released. The South Indian press wanted my opinion on Rahman. I told them he should take it easy. He has even composed a song Take it easy policy (laughs). He’s a great talent but his talent shouldn’t be over-utilised. I’m glad he’s expanding his creativity, incorporating North Indian folk, and so on. Recently nine of us including Lataji, Ashaji and Jagjit Singh sang Jana gana mana under Rahman’s supervision. It’ll be released on August 15. The project has been produced by the Vande Mataram producer Raja Bala. I was like a chorus singer singing for Rahman. He told me to sing in my own way. He also joined us in the singing. He got so excited that he picked up the guitar and started playing impromptu during the recording. I could make out Rahman loves me.
Such as?
Ah there you have got me! Yehin mushqil ho jata hai na. I find that spark in Hariharan. I also have great respect for Illayaraja. I have a feeling he’ll come back with some great music.

yet one more of the so many titbits about IR that we have not talked about in the myriad discussion pages here ;-)
Kiran Bedi acts
For the first time, ace police officer Kiran Bedi has acted in a short film titled The Real Salute. Kiran Bedi enacts a patriotic woman who finds the national flag lying in a public place. She picks it up, mends it and gives its true salutations.
This 30-minute film will be telecast on Doordarshan’s national network and the Metro channel and will also be dubbed in other languages for the regional channels. Illayaraja has scored the music for the film produced by RR Gopal of Malar Network and is directed by Gunashakthi.

There is no way IR will be MD for rajini.
It will be either Deva or ARR. IR music doesnt carry any commerical power behind it whatsoever.
The goldend days are gone :(
He is more like TR.PAPA of the Doorshan days
sorry buts thats the fact

>>>very interesting. Bhupen Hazarika's on Ilayaraaja!
Bhupen is a verteran MD. One of the most talented persons of India. He was awarded Dada saheb some 7-8 years ago. I have listened to many of his bengali and assame songs. I have a bangali cassette of his. Words from his mind are worth noticing. As an universal phenomenon, he has acknowledged IR. What has surprised me is his opinion about ARR. Great people see distant star so close.

What surprised me is, ...
The interviewer didnt prompt him about raja.
Nor Raja is a nationly defacto MD like ARR to be acknowledged.
And no mention about anyothers!.
Also the interview is not for vikatan or kumudam, In which case, Hazarika has to acknowledge local talents.

New flash...
Rumor spreads that ARR fans put a filter on IR's
new albums threads... and prevent it from appearing on the main page....
On hearing this, all IR fans walk towards
panchanathan recording studio to protest against
this 'ilivu' of their thalivar... ARR fans block
the way and police commisioner 'bb' has been
noted of the situation... everyone hopes he
will be able to pacify the situation..
Will it get solved peacefully..? or will there be
bloodshed.. ? the world waits with bated breath...

I listened to "Chinna Maharani" song on Sun TV - very nice song - passionate folkish song, well sung by Ilaiyaraja, very pleasant, fresh music.
I also saw a scene played on Sun TV, it was excellent - I'm pretty sure this movie will make most viewers cry..

Director from Kerala set to direct film in the US
By SANU GEORGE
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM -- Malayalam director Rajiv Anchal is all set to direct 'Beyond the Soul,' an English-language film that is set in the United States.
The movie, a musical, is scheduled for release this fall, and Anchal says it will make him the first Kerala-based Malayalee to direct a film in the US.
Anchal, a veteran of seven films, has roped in Malayalam superstar Mammootty to play a key role in the film and is also hoping to involve Hindi film actress Madhuri Dixit in the project.
"I am sure that that the role he (Mammootty) is going to play in my film is going to take him to newer heights and he is going to make waves through his performance," Anchal told Indo-Asian News Service.
"I have also spoken to Madhuri Dixit, who is now based in the U.S., to play a vital role in the English film. A last-round discussion with her is expected to take place once I reach there in the coming week," the director said.
The film revolves around three Indian children -- aged 9, 7 and 5 -- who are musical geniuses, tracing the spiritual roots of their music. "Mammootty and Madhuri would play the role of the parents of these three children," said Anchal, who has signed up veteran South Indian music director Illayaraja to direct the score.
'Beyond the Soul' is being produced by Screen Systems, a New York-based independent film support group comprising mostly students of the theater department of Columbia College of Chicago.
The script and the subject of the film are Anchal's, while eminent novelist O.V. Vijayan is doing the English translation.
Modest about his achievement of becoming the first Kerala-based director to make a film in the US, Anchal pointed out that there have been other Indians who have made a mark in the U.S. He cited the example of Manoj Shyamalan, an Indian American whose 'The Sixth Sense' was nominated in several categories at the Academy Awards.
"But I think I am the first Malayalee who is based in Kerala to direct a film in Hollywood," said Anchal.
"I decided to go to Hollywood because it is a worldwide subject," he said. "Malayalam has got serious limitations because of its narrow audience."
'Beyond the Soul' will be Anchal's eighth film, the first seven having been Malayalam movies. In 1997, his film 'Guru,' starring well-known star Mohanlal, was selected as the official entry from India for the Academy Awards.

thanks a lot for this great news - whenever there is experimentation - ppl invariably come to the genius. no doubt that IR will come up with a great score. One thing I noticed is that kannukkul nilavu was never included as recent IR hits. KN is a great album and is veryyy melodious to listen to......
