  Anu Malik getting a NA is a joke, getting it for Refugee is a bigger joke (its an ok score, not a great one), and getting it when Hey Ram was there is probably the biggest joke.
  
  But I think he is a lucky fellow to share his name with both IR and ARR in the credits for Lajja and Fiza.

  i just found this page abt national awards. it say KV Mahadavan had got NA for music in 1980 for sankarabharanam. IR for sagara sangamam in 84 and SB in 86 (so that was my only mistake, saying that it was the very next year). then RV got the award in 89 (not 88 as you said). and in 98 MM Kheravani did get an NA for annamayya. you think there is a difference between devotional and carnatic, but i dont. thats ur opinion and this is mine. as far as i know most carnatic and devotional songs are pretty close to each other. any way, why r u concentrating on the part of my post abt the years and awards..., i am talking abt the fact that all 4 NA of ARR were for mostly non traditional albums.

  I stand corrected about the NA's. I had gone through a list some days ago and it was surprising not to find this info there. About classical and devotional it is more than an opinion for me. Not all classical songs can be devotional or not all devotional songs can be classical. Annammayya's songs were a mix of both.
  Anyway I don't really have a favorable opinion on NAs after they gave it to Minsara Kanavu, Hum Dil De chuke Sanam, Refugee and KM. ARR can also get it for Boys and make it more "non-traditional", much to the delight of his fans!

  Jag,
  I would like to tell you that Annamacharya was a very prominent composer for Carnatic Classical music. And devotion was the theme of his compositions. He is famous for his Krithis which is popularly known as "Annamacharya Krithis". In those days, music was blended with devotion and the main theme of classical music was God and the devotion the composers had. This is my simple opinion and I hope there would be more responses aligned with my word.

  Thanks. I was aware that most classical songs were devotional. My opinion was that Annamayya's krithis were more folk oriented, not requiring the singer to know much of carnatic music to be able to render them correctly, though I could be mistaken. The compositions in the movie itself were semi-classical I think, with even a duet thrown in!

  No Jag, Annamachaarya krithis are classical indeed(reuest you to hear M.S.Subbalakshmi's). But , not all songs from film Annamaiyya are classical.They are pucca film songs.
