VJ,
Now I understand why Thenaali songs are not good. Aalankati is a good song though especially the way Kamal beautifully rendered it.
As a MD, one should not get influenced by actor or any other factor. (If you accept an offer do justification). The same was said when Rajini fans were not happy with Padaiyappa songs.
"Aada theriyathavalukku theru konal" nnu Tamilla
solvanga. Athu pola irukku. A complete MD should cater to all.
In my opinion, it is time factor for "Thenaali". ARR did not have much time (compared to the time he takes to compose songs normally) as he was pre-occupied for Webster. If you ask me, why he accepted, it is money! VM factor is something ARR fans find some excuses for!

Not many may remember today the refrains of the classic bhajan Mann tadpat Hari darshan ko aaj from Baiju Bawra. And many more may be ignorant of the fact that the bhajan, considered one of the best ever rendered in films, was the teamwork of an all- Muslim group. Written by Shakeel Badayuni and composed by Naushad, it was sung by Mohd. Rafi. And gems like this are not rare in film music. Allah tero naam Ishwar tero naam written by Sahir Ludhianvi is yet another example of how secular-minded our film/music world is. Or so we believed till A R Rahman turned a mamma's boy and bowed to his mother's dogmatic dictates.
Born a Hindu (Dilip), Rahman was initiated into Islam at the behest of his mother Kareema Begum alias Kasthuri, who changed her religion in the face of financial difficulties after the death of her husband, small-time music director R Somashekar. Though purely a matter of personal belief, his religious leanings stand to be criticized because of his tolerance of the fanatical streak shown by his family.
A journalist who had interviewed Rahman during his salad days for a Tamil weekly recently approached him for a song-based programme for Sun channel. The journalist got the nod and Rahman gave him a solid two-hour time, keeping even Kamal Haasan and director Ravikumar, who had come to shoot publicity stills, waiting. The journo was thrilled, but not for long. Just before the programme's telecast, Rahman's mother called up seeking the deletion of the famous song Sankara nadasareerapara of the hit Telugu musical Sankarabharanam from the programme. Incidentally, the programme was about the favourite songs of Rahman scored by other music directors. Rahman's mother was apparently miffed that her son, a Muslim, could list a 'Hindu' song as one of his favourites.
As the song was not deleted from the programme, Rahman's mother has now stalled the telecast of its second episode. This has obviously put the journo in a financial fix for the sponsors will pay him only after the telecast of the second part.
What's surprising here is that there's not been even a murmur of protest from Rahman. He's the same person who had no qualms about doing the job work of converting Sankarabharanam's songs into DAT (Digital Audio Tape) format from the spool format way back in 1991 (DAT is the master for making CDs). Or is it that religion was not a criterion to be considered because he was only a struggling keyboard player at that time? And now that he's a name to reckon with in the music field he can probably let his religious bigotism show through. Even worse is his mother bulldozing him about his choice of songs as it sends a rather ominous signal.
To begin with, it casts an ugly shadow of doubt on his secular credentials. And religious fundamentalism or its tolerance is hardly expected from the maker of the record-breaking album Vandemataram, in which he eulogized the nation singing Ma tujhe salam. Or was the salam guided more by market compulsions than real patriotism?
When patriotism and secularism are the consistent themes of his music, one is inclined to question why duplication of any non-Islamic devotional music is banned at the duplication unit run by his sister Kanchana? Is it the 'converted' status which makes Rahman and family overzealous in reaffirming their religious identity like this?
For his own good, Rahman must learn, and teach his family too, to draw a line between religion and fanaticism. After all, can he really afford to wear religious blinkers? For what will the obedient mamma's boy do if she tomorrow prevents him from working for Hindu producers and directors?

Zubeida's teaser sound byte was good to begin with... until Lata PAtti started 'So Gaye..'
Hum bhi so gaye saare.
If it is a background kind of song, no problem. I am only hoping Karishma doesn't lip-sync for this song. It is a Shyam Benegal film, not a Yash Chopra candy floss romance drama.

I bought Tenaali from SaReGaMa and guess what!!
I got Rishi as a bonus!!
Though i started liking Rishi better, now Tenaali songs have started growing on me..
I cant beleive, even Injirango sounds awesome in my home-theatre!! I wasnt surprised, cause historically I have always found ARR songs take a couple of listenings before you really start liking it! I really like what i hear in Tenaaali. For sometime I thought i thought 10.99+Tax, went down the drain.. Its not!!
Hope the movie is good too.. I reserved a ticket for 9 bucks for the Oct 27th show with MuMu!!
Dallas-il kudi vazhum tamizh thiraipada rasiga perumakkale!! ungalai angu santhikiren.

I think the senior singer is SPB and the bombay import is Hariharan. Illaya nadigar(?!) is Vijay ... there was an interview somewhere where Vijay was asked about this and he came up with a "chappakattu" explanation.
