Ilayaraja's recycled hits

In a recent thread, discussion turned to the validity of recycling a tune from one language to another by the same composer. I believe it’s good to have a good tune in as many languages as possible since it may be new to someone who focuses in only one language. Many in the DF feel that a recycled tune shows the composer in a bad light. Anyway, during this discussion I realized that Ilayaraja has many Telugu to Thamizh and vice-versa recycled hits. Since we don’t have a list of all these remade movies and soundtracks, I would like to come up with a thorough list of all such movies by Ilayaraja along with details about singers who sang the original and the recycled tune.

  all the above songs get a perfect 10 from me.what music.so matured.hmmm..I think such serious and profound music is lost to us-nowadays no one seems to like them.
  eenadu vidiponi is a recycle-this was a BGM score
  foe swathi muthyam(another movie which deserved a National awrd but was not given)and vamsi liked this tune so much IR composed a full song for this tune

  Yes, I am very sure with my first posting. In the second, I was not so sure. That is why I said " might be right or wrong". Now, it is thrown up for discussion. You seem to have not listened to any of the song. Let others also, listen and say their opinion. I am not like others. If proved wrong, I will change my opinion. After all, we discuss here to share and form opinions. Why, only you are pitted against me.? When the title is about recycled songs, then what makes my postings illegitemate in this thread.?

  the olangal song 'thumbi vaa' became 'neerveezhchi' in a balumahendra's movie - a remake of the superb movie yaathra.
  
  recycling is not bad. otherwise we would not have got many wonderful songs. if 'star' songs are good, ARR should be appreciated.
  
  somehow, many people are not aware that it has been released. not much hype.

  One more interest news about:
  
  sangathil paadadha kavidha (or) thumbi vaa (or) neerveezchi
  
  The same tune is used in the film Moondraam Pirai for about a minute or so in BGM. The scene is - Kamal meeting Sridevi for the first time(i suppose) in the brothel house.
  
  I think the BGM was in voice mode, by IR himself.

  Thanks for the link. If finding this soundtrack is the only good thing to come out of this thread, the thread has already served its purpose.I'm thoroughly won over by the songs. Amazingly fresh sounding KJY and PS. How I wish these were available in Thamizh.

  I have listened to all the 4 songs that you have mentioned and I listened to them again
  this week. I didn't find any similarity between
  them as you have proclaimed.
  
  MS, my intention is not to fight with people but read what Common Friend has written (he says
  he has to give examples of IR recycling songs (examples he quoted were in no way similar to each other) because people say ARR recycles his songs). Did it make any sense?

  I saw the movie meghasandhesam in coimbatore.It ran as a morning show in thanam-the song picturisation was fantastic.all the songs were shot on the banks of godavari(what a mighty river!).do you know who was the director?Dasari Narayana Rao.this was a surprise movie -far different from his usual stuff.
  my favorites were radhika krishna and seetha vela.
  it was a well deserved award for ramesh naidu who is no more.

  I think that song has four versions totally, IR reused the tune again in Hindhi movie 'Aur Ek Prem Kahani' directed by Balu Mahendra., The song starts something like 'Sunday ko' ... sorry I forgot the lyrics., Sung By Mano and Preethi Uththam Singh ('Kaadhal Vaanilae' and 'Allah un aaNaippadi' fame)

  what about recycled songs from tamil to tamil.
  sakara kattikuku from mella thridandhu kadahu was a 100% recycled song (adi masam??) from the movie sittu kurivi.

  Interesting observation about Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu(MTK). But am confused, coz there is a news that all the tunes in MTK is by MSV and "Songs-BGM" by IR. If e.hari meant that the tune is recycled from sittu kuruvi song then does it mean MSV copied IR song (an almost certain impossible thing)? could someone clarify?

  There are several songs in Kannada also recycled from Tamil. Some are:
  
  1) Edho ninaivugal from Agal Vilakku
  2) Naguva Nayana (Pallavi Anu Pallavi)
  3) Jotheyalli jothe jotheyalli (Geetha) - Vizhiyile mani vizhiyil from 100th NaaL
  4) Keladhe nimageega (Geetha) - Devadai ilam devi from Ayiram Nilave vaa (this one had entirely different orch. which changed the whole feel of the song, with awesome WC chorus sections)

  Venkatesh, #1 in your list is actually recycled from the film 'Maathu Thappada Maga' which came out the year before 'Agal Vilakku.' The original song's title I think is 'Bhano Boomiyaa'.

  Yes, Most of Ilayaraja's songs who made in Kannada are all original songs who then recycled in any other languages.
  
  He himself has told in one of his interviews on Kannada Channel.

  I think you are talking about Ore ragam sung by KJ (I think there is a female version by SJ too). If it is so, it is from Amutha Ganam (vijayakanth starrer I think).

  They reminded me of the vintage Raaja, with a smooth tempo and the mood perfectly maintained in each of the songs.....

  Hmm... 'Amutha Gaanam'... didn't that film come out in 1985? Perhaps the soundtrack was released long before the film? That can happen. Well, I was just reading a review of 'Abhinandhana' at some Telugu website, and the reviewer stated that the tune for the song 'Ade Neevu Ade Nenu' was that of the song 'Ore Raagam..' That's all.

  There is also one more song in abhinandhana ' Prema ledhani ..'(SPB) which is a recycle of 'Nalum en manam '(KJY,SJ) from Nilavu suduvadhillai.The tamil version looks like a duet of happy couple, while telugu version is the anti kadhal song. Quite often the song for all the devadas in AP. Abinandhana was acted by Karthik and Shobana and came in Tamil as 'KADHAL GEETHAM' in the early 90's. But sank without a trace

  Did you guys know that there was a tele-hindi movie in which also 'Sangathil' song was used. I think it is AUR EK PREM KAHANI , which was directed by Balu Mahendra with Ramesh Aravind in the lead. I think it is meendum kokila's remake.
  Balu Mahendra seems to have used this tune in Tamil (Moondram pirai -BGM and Neerveezchi - Kanne Kalaimaane)
  Telugu -neerkhsana is the movie,( 'Aakasam')
  Malyalam -Olangal
  The worst mistake IR made was to give the song to the uncouth director of 'AUTORAJA', in which Vijayakanth and some useless heroine killed the song.

  Did any of you guys yet mention 'Melle Melle' in the Mallu film Apaaratha (1992)? The song's a total rehash of 'Valli Valli Enna Vanthaan' from Deiva Vaakku, only with KJY's voice and Malayalam lyrics. BTW, the film had an ultra melodious solo by KS Chitra called 'Puzhankooril...' with intense Christian flavor.
