Probabaly, you might have heard only twenty of his songs. Try to hear more. You will still have just 5 to quote as bad ones.
Unfortunately, I have heard almost 95% of ARR's TFM output (which is better than even the percentage of IR's TFM output that I have listened to). I'm not impressed with his overall output even though I have to admit that he's brilliant at times. More is made out of him as a composer than what quantum he has really produced, IMHO. Those that appear flashy initially (arabikkadalOram, oorvashi, chikkubukku etc.) fade very quickly from my (& probably most people's) memory, unlike the `rasputin's & `beat it's which I can enjoy even after 1000 listenings. I think it's better to continue this in some other ARR thread.

Sorry for this digression. Let's focus on IR's new albums, if any.

Sorry Kiru..that was not directed at you...I should've mentioned I just used that as a point to ARR bashers (why am i doin it in this thread anyway ?)
"Those that appear flashy initially (arabikkadalOram, oorvashi, chikkubukku etc.) fade very quickly from my (& probably most people's)...."
Eden...all the three mentioned above had some really cool loops and grooves...can't help if your mindset is still in the 70s and 80s....
and any good film song for that matter can be listened to after a gap be it IR, ARR or Deva...try it with an open mind just to enjoy music...don't approach it as IR/ARR...it works !
"In the film Anjali, you have only put four songs, if I am right. It is one of my faveroit albums and all the songs are great and well ahead of ARR time..."
No...IMO "Thalapathi" forecasted the trend that would take place but which IR abandoned...Anjali songs had a chorus that was not sophisticated and spoilt otherwise good compositions...and the overuse of trumpets showed that IR was still behind in the 70s...I wondered when I listened to Agni Natchatiram in 1988? why IR didn't use synth bass rhythms and other electronic sounds...they would have added a real sophistication to his product...he could have as he was aware of the advancements in technology (he had used some software for mixing his violin pieces in Punnagai Mannan I had heard) but he was not prepared to change his mindset...anyway thank god his kids are there to take his legacy forward but an advertising exposure would have been good for them....

Eden...all the three mentioned above had some really cool loops and grooves...can't help if your mindset is still in the 70s and 80s.... Cosmician, what to say, if some has a habit of reading only part of others' messages...try comparing the ARR flashes with the likes of `careless whispers' and then probably you'll understand what `longevity' means...To me a song will get etched only if it's great from start till end. I have acknowledged a list of ARR's songs in some other thread, please go and read...
And about your opinion of me still in 70's, oh how much I long to go back to 70's you never know & I'm sure I don't look forward to the time when I'll be kudukudu kizhavan:-)) And if you think to appreciate what is the output of some MJ inspirations is the mindset needed for the future, I sure do not have one:-(

Then what do you think has been influencing TFM from the 60s onwards ? WCM, Rock, Pop and now the countless other genres that are being born everyday....

..and BTW Eden...what "ARR flashes" did u mean ?...the ones u had mentioned b4 ? If that is so then in no way u can compare "Careless Whispers" with those....its like comparing the countless other forgettable George Michael songs to "Kaadhal Rojave" and I can't recall any other memorable GM song other than Faith, CW ??!??...but the ARR flashes you had mentioned have hooks that I can stil pick on and remember...

Eden...and please stop comparing Western Pop musicians with our elite TFMD...we are way above in the richness of our music...we have done things which these guys can never even imagine nor have the imagination for...only now you can see experimentation entering the with hip-hop and countless other genres into mainstream pop...

one more thought....sorry guys and gals....
the 70s is like 11th standard...nothing serious...jus hanging around and wasting time....the 60s and 80s are like 10th and 12th standard - real serious stuff...if u see TFM in the 70s - u had real decadent stuff, nothing compared to the 60s...end 70s IR changed the trend...80s were his peak...and 90s is your 1st year college, more of fun and stuff...so people the best things are yet to come in TFM...once you settle down into 2nd and 3rd year of college, u bcom serious...the same thing will happen to TFM in the coming years...

Hi Fliflo....remember IR and ARR had to struggle...nothing comes without a bit of struggle and hardwork....well i can share my experience...but that should be in another forum not here in TFM..suffice to say that from Rs. 650/- per month after college...4 years of real hard work today earns me Rs.60,000 a month..konjum bandha ellam uttuttu sincere work panna success nichaiyam... :-)

Guys, I have a doubt. I'd appreciate if you could help me here:
I was watching 'Sawere Wali Gaadi' on TV. This was a remake of Bharati Raja's 'Kizhakke Pogum Rayil'. The Hindi version starred Sunny Deol and a very pretty Poonam Dhillon. Compared to the lead pair the Tamil original had ugly ducklings as hero and heroine!!! OK, I am digressing here...
I noticed that the songs had the typical Lakshmi Kant-Pyarelal touch, but the amazing BGM was IMO surefire the inimitable Ilayaraja.
It was so good, so good that I was bewitched. Particularly there's a scene with the hero and the heroine at a Mela, sitting on the 'Merry-Go-Round'... in slow motion. It had an impressive BGM piece that was Agmark IR. There were many many such instances.
Can anyone please confirm this? I had missed the beginning of the movie and thus couldn't see the credits.
Thanks

IMO...such comments are personal biases and so what if the lead pair are not good looking??? Are you aware that you are directing your comments against an entire population and audience for whom this film was intended and who can easily identify with this "ugly duckling" lead pair than your bimbo brainless bollywooden lead pairs ??!!!
Who said that a film should have a good looking lead pair...unnai solli kuttrumillai...manitha iyerkkai !
But I think you should change your opinion and refrain from making such "racist", "senseless" comments hereafter. An apology is in order !

hi people.. am a new addition to this foruma and a fanatic fan of IR..
and i totally agree with cosmician on the fact that "looks" are secondary for the lead pair
as long as they fit into the storyline... and not like the
cluseless anilkapoor in the hapless remake of devar magan...

I really wonder why you took that digression of Neels so seriously!! He was in fact digressing and thats got no relevance to this thread. I think we can leave him with his personal remarks moreso 'cos he has agreed that it was in the strict sense, merely a digression!
Others:
Who did the BGM for sawere wali gadi? I'm curious! Did IR do the BGM alone and let LP do the songs? That would be a very rare instance isnt it?

I think 'Sawere Wali Gadi' is by RDB and not LP..
No idea on the BGM.

cosmician..you were little hard on Neels. Also, even when you think somebody is in the wrong.please dont go into the disrespectful singulars. I agree with you though that Neels statement was a little 'racist'. I am sure this is a bias that many of us have. Neels is a valuable contributor to the forum and he will surely be polite enough to acknowledge the insensibilities in that comment.

cosmician..you have told me before about 'thalapathi' but to me IR comes up with something like that now and then. And that is why I think he is a great MD. Yesterday I was listening to mouna rAgam and chinna chinna vannak kuyil was a really fantastic POP song. And the list goes on. It is IR who can come up with drastically different songs often.
Also, I am not sure why you think trumpets are passe. For that matter, WCM itself is passe. But IR likes it. People should have opinions/philosophy/style. Only then new genres can be created and existing genres pushed to their extremes. You want IR to go in the POP direction but he wants to go in the classical direction, that is all.
