I am beginning to appreciate ARRs music recently. Formerly i was biased against him because of the contrived nature of the tunes, lack of meaningful preludes and interludes, lack of surprise elements in the songs 'n lack of melody. now with mudhalvan, rhtym, etc. this guy has matured dramatically. i am beginning to appreciate ARRs music over IRs for just one reason only. ARR is a genius in creating 'Musicals', just amazes me. (no wonder Weber has taken on rahman.) Plus, it is a music you can listen with any pretentious sophisticate around you. IRs you have to have folksy people with you. Sophisticates and city breds generally shy away. IR has not ventured into 'Musicals' arena at all. Or, am I wrong? But, the flavor does not last long, whereas IR captivates me forever just for the sheer variety and character of the tunes.
bottomline, my prejudice to rahman's music is fading as i see him give very powerful tunes (without being melodious, which is not palatable to today's mod audience) his 'musicals' though not lasting music has gone to prove that interludes and preludes are distractions and songs can be made without those and find a massive audience. Not to say that we must have IR stop preludes and interludes, man there is only one god of music and that is still IR. But, ARR is getting closer to the heavens.
Anyone changed from IR/Kr to ARR and begun to accept after having a bias for a long time? Vice versa?

Now that I know what people mean by 'sophisticated music' :) Now I want some discussion on 'fresh music' (Whenever you are busy, nAradar job is the easiest thing to do :))

Yet_another..etc:
Your first analogy with Java and C is brilliant, to say the least. Being (at least so-called) platform independent implies that some local flavour is lost. And what is TFM if all it does it make it sound totally unlike TFM? And we all know how Java-based front-ends look, right?
comment has quitely sneaked in Sivamani, who was already in vogue before ARR 'discovered' him. yaaro's list of sixteen names and comment's list of 12 + 'many many more', lead to an interesting question. Does ARR get it right only half the time?
Finally, if ARR made MDs a little bit more than 'mere score-writers' what do you think IR was doing? Get a life man!!

I did not convert but have included ARR as one of the most amazing.
And above all, ARR is the only person, practically, had broken the IR tradition -1976 - 1992 to capture new souls. Respect him too!!!

"what is up with you".... who has got it right half the time tell me, none.
Arr is still here on the top all over india...which means - as of today he has got it right more than anyone else. (even be it 0.5% right, others could not do that...)
secondly,
'mere score-writers' ...show me a md before arr who sits and record himself on the consle. mix balance sound, make his own sounds, tries various new things using technology..., who involves himself in making sure the tape comes out well etc ec..
by far msv or ir were mere score writers, calling them mere score writers was not to insult them,
arr changed the trend. thats all, this topic has discounted arr just for the sake of it.
now tell me who has to get a life , I already have a 'good' one espeically some good wishes above from yet_another_musician... -:)
Imho, ...I see music differently I try to hear new things in every score I hear...I do find them in arr score till date.

btw; i did not say arr intro'ed sivamani, he uses him pretty well, he is the top of the line drummer today. I think IR used purshothaman, msv has used more sivamani.

I too try to look out for different things in music and I listen to quite a varied fare. It is my personal belief that ARR quite often is not different and when he is, he is trying to be different for the sake of being different. That does not imply that his music is bad. It, again in my opinion, does not have the smoothness or the polish of, say, MSV or IR.
comment : What do you think about the 'unakkenna mele nindrai' song?

wiuwug...(can you please something small as title, suggestion, - truth, fighter, musicfan :)
this song has 2 raga's,
first part is sindhu bhiravi - pallavi,in the saranam there is kalyanavasantham.
great tune, well rendered by SPB, but 2nd bgm music is some what confusing, but matches the movie well.(during my collage culturals day in early 88-90's a singer called ramanan from V.Collage i think, use to sing it well on stage. :)..I can talk more , but this is not the place. you can email me.
arr's tunes are pretty good in variations. something like msv...:)

There will be no converts from ARR to any other MD.
Though the convert of hindu Rasiah to Christian Ilayaraja and reconvert to hindu IR, Convert Dilip to muslim ARR, I think the KR and YSR guys etc are no where before them.
They can try for something else.

The way IR used TMS in his early films for about his first eight years tenure, when Sivaji was THE hero and MGR switching over as CM, and degraded him in public later makes us think whether TMS may be right.
It was the same TMS who buttered IR on a stage performance, quitting MSV abruptly saying "Naangallam Madurai, meenatchi pillainga"! Both showed their 'Characteristic Budhdhi' and because of their likeminded crookedness the same poles went apart.
Mr.X should not be unparlimentary in this thread, for, tfm is scr**ing up IR now for what he did antegrade for tamil voices like TMS in tamil films. IR should atleast be fair now! It can be a "Kann ketta piragu suriya namaskaram"-worth some salvation.

First I was covered by IR's music in my childhood days (below 11th std). After ARR visit I just changed to listen ARRs music (in 12th, college first year). But From mid of 2nd year of college, I was convered to a die-hard fan of IR because of his true music which touch my soul anytime

anyway i guess this will be something fundametal to ya'll...
during IR's peak .... we had less of suntv .. all we had was friday night oliyum oliyum where they showd 0.04 songs between ads... now our exposure to music is more..even radio then didnt air songs as frequently as it does now..
the upshot is we get to hear arr's each song many more times then we ever heard IR songs... this sort of saturates us with arr songs and IR since it has been rare is evergreen... well thats my opinion..
i now like ARR more than IR but the truth is when it comes to a new album by ARR i get all exited and buy it and listen to it and appreciate it a million times... but when it comes to older songs ninaivellam nithya...rajaparvai fascinates me more than... puthiya mannargal, gentleman, kadhalan etc...
it doesnt mean that arr's songs did not stand the test of time... it just has been heard a million times and so.. its not all that rare... the moment u think u have not heard an arr song for a long time.... pop!!! comes that song in the TV/radio...
plus IR's good songs arent complimented by good movies/picturization hence.... bharathy, devadhai et. all are totally wasted... something ARR has been savvy to take care of the fact that he works with sucessful people... success breeds more success and failiure attaches with more failiure... well thats being proved right here...
call it coincidence or simple fact..... but after 1991/92 ARR has been giving 5-6 movies a year and sometimes 7-8 and believe it or not 80% are big hits and sales reciords turn out very well! cant say the same abt IR. he gives 20-25 movies a year and 1-2 is upto the mark.. hits havent been every year also offlate....

I liked some of the recent songs only after seeing the song...that was never the case with raja songs...In fact watching the song wud spoil ur mood..one good example is "edhO ninaivugaL" from agal viLakku

One aspect of popular music is that 'novelty' in terms of sound plays an important role in endearing the song to the user. ARR came with his synths to TFM and people really fell in love with the 'new sound'. NOte I am not putting down ARR's compositional skills. I am just saying IR was doing quality work as well. This is what prompts people like YSR to use synths/rhythm boxes etc and people immediately perceives that to be the 'coolest' kind of music. IR also did some synth stuff in Kadhalukku mariyAdhai successfully without having to change his compositional style. BTW, I have been listening to a variety of music in the 90s and I still think IR has done equally wonderful works in the 90s (comparable to the 70s, 80s). I think if there is any implication that we perceived IR's music to be great because we did not hear other kinds of music, it is utterly laughable.
