Ilaiyaraaja's Rajaparvai

What an excellent effort by our Maestro! Songs and Re-recording are superb.

Especially violin concert by kamal in the blind school. It starts with violin and sitar combination in carnatic then mirudhangam and tabela got added, then it gets mixed up with Synth and Bass Guitar and goes to western classical, finally all ends up in carnatic music again.

This movie came 20 years back(1981). Now only I am realizing the truth of Raaja's pondicheri speech recently, stating that "I have wasted 25 years doing music in cinema". If he would have set his career in the right direction long time back, by this this time he would have desperate set of fans for his music all over the world.

  I know how was the scene in late 80s and early 90s, Raja featured in postered, jalra lobbies, few cover stories, articles in frontline, debonier etc etc.
  
  But did media and people find a genius in him? other than recognizing him as a gold egg laying duck?

  Those days,(If I remember right), the first movie to have a music director on a hoarding was for the movie Payanangal Mudivathilai. IR's picture was a watermark for every film poster from then on.
  
  When I went to record some songs on a cassette (no original cassettes those days, only LPs) with my list of IR songs, the shop owner offered me the option of listening to "Pattakathi Bhairavan" on his LP Player. After listening to "Engengo Sellum" for a few seconds I was stunned. The shop keeper said "Intha madhiri music kaetadhe illayai Sar"...
  
  Also, if you really want to know how much IR was appreciated, read the movie review for "Rosapoo Ravikaikaari". AV says 'Gramathu Isaiyai idhay vida sirapa panna ini oru allu TFM-la pirakanum"..

  I am the K.S. Ravichandan in Metallurgy 1983 batch. Hockey Sridhar and Elango were my class mates...You might recall that Amaresa Ghandhi (electrical) and I used to hang out together often building stereo amplifiers and recording IR songs at those shops and also doing some photographic club activities..
  
  Your apt chracterization of IR mania those dates struck a chord..Hey I know this guy... we used to talk about those songs...back in the 1980s..You were in Production Engg.. Am I correct?

  Those all those PSG alumini and others who were able to give us a walk-through of 'those days'. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your posts. I guess it was only during 70's, after the advent of cassettes, that music reached the masses in terms of affordability.
  
  During the times of LPs, not many could afford a LP disc player - so radio was the main source. I have heard how, in those days, jsut to listen songs in car stereos, people had to transfer the songs from LP to a cassette.
  
  Yaaro, very true about "Chinnathambi". The songs were such a rage - I remember how the songs were heard in every nook and corner and the songs were hummed on every lip.
