I didn't notice 5 part vocal harmony because I just don't know what it is. Am I to hang my head in shame that I was indifferent to "Smiyai" from the time I first heard it, not knowing that it contained several such innovations?
What's funny... Can anyone buy a burger after eating it? Or, would you go to a movie after liking it?
Sometimes, when I read your comments, I feel that it's better off letting you musical genius'es discuss things in this thread and 'paamarans' like me get on with their pettiness seperately in an ignoramus-thread. Am I fooling myself by thinking there is a subtle racism running underneath this forum that presupposes classical (esp.carnatic) knowledge as the core when it comes to discussing music, and anyone outside this circle obviously doesn't count?
Well, maybe getting paranoid with age, aren't I??
:)

basically, suresh, I DONT get you, I did not post it for you. Did I have a name in my posting,
-- i am sure I will not buy a HAM burger knowing that is not a veggie stuff, that too after making this mistake in my previous experience.,an ordinary human will do this - learning by experience.
buying a burger knowing it is HAM Burger then why write a huge para trashing about the burger and its maker--- it was funny to me.
-- secondly as far as I know there is no racism here., carnatic knowlege etc -- what do mean by this, i dont know.
This is just an outpour from you for just telling what I liked in the song., my posting is just similar to you saying nothing in the song, i say there is something in the song.
ends there.
you have every right to say that there is no 5part vocal harmony in the song, but you did not do that, endedup in taking things personally.
as mentioned
maybe getting paranoid with age - you might be 70yrs old, not me. :)

the biggest joke in this forum is people wasting their energy in singing eulogies for a copy cat called arr. cmon man, this guy is lifting tunes right left and center, present and past and you guys type reference notes for the musical origin, idea which was someone else's. guys a composer who lifts tunes from such third grade originals like dr. alban, paul young, michel the wacko jacko-can never be a whiz kid, if you feel like appreciating the audio quality toast a drink for the sound engineers-siva kumar and shridhar. good bye and good riddance to the pilferer, and plagiarizing fake called arr.

Swami :
Smiyai ---> I just can't figure out what that word means and added the singer has done whatever he could do to kill Tamizh. ARR give us SPB please.
Suttum Vizhi ---> sorry no comments
Kannamoochi ---> Lovely song, and very well rendered by KJY and Chitra.
Yenge Enathu Kavithai --> The thavil percussion bit at the start is good.
Kandukonden ----> no comments
Konjum Mainakal --> very ordinary song.
I didn't find anything other than this to mention. Overall very ordinary rythm arrangement.
May be, the word "smayi yaayi" doesnt make sense.. it's one of those words that have been contributed by people like VM (humma-humma, jumbalakkas, mukkala, kachoom-kachoom etc etc)... From music point of view, the score is certainly brilliant. The male vocal harmony in that song is one of the best in recent TFM. If you are an unbiased reviewer, you should point out both the +ves and -ves of the album and of the MD. When you could point out a negative aspect of "poor rhythm arrangement", there was not a single positive aspect about the contribution of ARR to the album that was told by you.
In your, you were highly critical of the KKKK album, finding almost nothing positive to say about the contribution of ARR. According to you, the credit for KKKK album's +ve points, if any, goes to Chitra and KJY.
Isnt this indicative of a distinct bias??? I could sense a tone of sarcasm in your posting, and hence asked you to elaborate about your "no comments" etc... It would make room for a healthier discussion if we could approach an album with an open mind!!

as long as arr has an open mind in lifting tunes, healthy discussions of his fake products is not possible. i feel its high time you stopped these nonsensical analysis-do you reside at kilpauk or any where nearby???-and postings which would take u and your composer any where
"vocal harmony
rhythm arrangement"
ubayam arr's cassette cover??? do you know the actual meaning of the above mentioned??? or just firing in the dark thinking youre a musical analyst or something, if yes please stop it, a wee bit annoying and dont jump on others throat like a dracula

vocal harmony,
how many voices did you hear when the first line is sung in the maiiii song. (5 part, based on the chord, singer sings the each note of the chord, all together, most of arr songs have rich vocal harmonies
(btw:most of us here know what is vocal harmony is.)

the beginnings of followins songs have very good vocal harmonies:
ragavane ramana ragunatha -ilamaikalangal
amudhe tamizhle-kovilpura
vedham anuvilum varum nadham-salangai oli
om namachivaya, interlude from thakita thathimi-salangai oli
natarajan padhathil-from the telugu movie sitara
only after typing all this did I notice-all of them are carnatic based songs.to attempt a western concept in carnatic songs i think is quite extraordinary!

Prakash,
Where exactly is vocal harmony in "ragavane ramana ragunatha -ilamaikalangal"?
It will help listeners like me understand.

stopit,
Most "anonymous" postings like yours dont warrant any reply. You dont even have the guts to provide your name or a sensible nick.. Its below my dignity to provide a rebuttal to someone like you. period.
Prakash,
I am not sure if your examples are appropriate for vocal harmony. As srikanth mentions, in vocal harmony - its the a number of voices, singing the same line, each singing it in different note of the chord.
Some examples of vocal harmony: Jumbalakka (En swasa Katre), Humma humma (bombay), Ooo la laa laa (misaara kanavu)
Your examples of "Om namachivaaya", "ragavne ramana" etc have multiple variations of same line. Its a norm in carnatic music or even hindustani to start singing the first line with a simple note, and slowly elborate, variate and improvise the same line subsequently. This is NOT vocal harmony... But in vocal harmony, there are many voices singing the same line, but in different notes, simulatenously.
You could listen to smaayiyaayi, or jumbalakka, and see how multiple voices blend together in perfect harmony.

IMO,
one of the best examples of vocal harmony is Raaja, Raajaadhi Raaja from Agni Natchathiram. Now, have u guys listened to the second interlude of Muthu Nilave from Time? i dont like the song too much at all, but the vocal chords are mind-blowing..
what do u guys think?

hari,
yes rajathi rajan in Agni* is has harmonies,
(Raja concentrates more on arragments which have perfect harmonies.)
As far as arr goes, he has vocal harmonies for almost every song, similar to western music.
, in columbus columbus, the second saranam
(harmony for lines: thalai muraiyai alli) listen to the harmony part, simply wonderful, and arr renders it perfectly.

raves these two albums(AP & KK). I am not a
