Can anybody tell me if Video CDs are good ? Technically the video/audio quality is no better than a VHS cassette but TFM video tapes are lousy to say the least. Do VCDs match a original VHS tape in quality ? A lot of oliyum oLiyum VCDs are available. How is the audio/video quality of these ? Any experiences ?

Basically I am planning on buying a DVD player and I cannot decide whether to buy one which plays VCD s also. (Only Panasonic and Sony manufacture them and they are about $150 costlier than ones which play only DVDs.) Yesterday I saw 3 Hindi DVDs - one chitrahaar DVD, Yes Boss and Virasat and the prints were very good. Sound is also supposed to be Dolby Digital. TF I hope will start releasing movies on DVD soon.
SathyaKeerthi :
If I remember right, you has mentioned in another thread that you saw Kadhalukku Mariyadhai on VCD. Any opinions ? (not on the movie but on VCD quality).

I have seen a few video prints from VCDs.
Videos made from copyrighted VCD's seem to be good. The print was very clear and the audio was also good. The focussing etc. were good.
Am not sure about the VCD's made from camera prints.
We are also wanting to buy DVD player.

Hi Guys
I just came back from INDIA. I have purchased around 10 VCD's. (Songs only), the picture and sound clarity is very good. You need a minimum of 256 color card.
VCD cannot be played on a DVD. It needs a VCD player or a computer. The data is stored in MPEG compression.
Though the VCDs say they are DVD compatable , they are not, I have tried on my DVD player....
it works only on the computer....
Thanks
Srikanth

Thanks Srikanth.
VCDs can only be played back on DVD players which are specifically designed for playback. VCDs and DVDs follow different MPEG standards and the decoding chips are different. As far as I know only Sony & Panasonic DVD players can play DVD/VCD/CDs. Since they have an extra chip they are costlier than other players. Is the picture and sound quality at least as good as a VHS cassette (Hollywood releases) ?

PG:
I have seen two movies on VCD: ulagam sutrum vaaliban,
Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai. The first one was
not very good. Especially, in places where the
camera moves fast, there is a digital effect:
the jump feeling. It was even irritating to the
eyes.
But KM was really excellent. Tremendous clarity
and colour! Seeing and listening to the ennai thaalaatta varuvaaLO
song on VCD was great!

I have seen some VCDs and also Video Cassetees made out of VCDs. The clarity is too good.

I've watched the following movies on VCDs:
veera pANdiyak kattabomman
mannAdhi mannan
kAdhalikka nEramillai
thEnilavu
nenjirukkum varai
salangai oli
sindhu bhairavi
punnagai mannan
kAdhalan
kAdhal dhEsam
dEvarAgam
minsArak kanavu
kAdhalukku mariyAdhai
assorted oliyum oLiyum
Very crisp visuals, true-to-original color (versus the converted NTSC videotapes). IMO, the audio effects come thru better in the 90 movies than the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s (obviously?).
Main consumer annoyance: since a movie consists of multiple CDs, having to get up and switch CDs in the middle. I wonder if they have VCD-players with automatic CD changers analogous to the audio CD players?

Yes. I have bought a system (Sony) in which I
can load 3 CDs (or VCDs) at a time, and it
switches automatically (takes about 10 seconds
for the switching).

How much does a movie on VCD cost in India ? It costs about $30 here (USA) which I feel is too high considering that new Hollywood movies on DVD cost about $30.

You need a (NTSC/PAL/SECAM) multi-system VCR with a NTSC output to play on a NTSC TV.
In some VCRs the output is selectable - PAL/NTSC.
Check out the Indian stores on Oak Tree Road. Almost every Indian electronics shop will have one. Hi-Fi (Stereo Audio) multi-system VCRs are harder to find and more expensive.

Ok, best will be to get a yamaha psr serious keyboard,
Looks for general midi, midi ports (in/out/optional thru), should have pitch bender
atlest 127 tones, with atleast 5 octaves.
should cost you somewhere from 250-300.
There is a new keyb (i think it is from Yamaha) (called as the DJ keyboard packed with lot of fun!), check it in www.Musiciansfriend.com

Again, sorry to bug you. I could'nt find anything in that price range from Yamaha with a pitch bender. (PSR240 and PSR270 are in that range but don't have a pitch bender). How important is a bender? Is it okay to go ahead and buy one of these models, or should I spend some extra money and try to get one with a bender?

Often Pitch bender is very handy, it is for you to decide.

Binu,
There is no such thing as 'All region DVD' ..Only all region DVD player. A disc is specifically encoded for a particular region. When you first booted up your laptop did it not prompt you to configure the region ? My Compaq PC did that. So PCs/laptop the region can be set only the very first time. Or maybe your Sony is already preconfigured for the region where it was sold. I guess you did not buy it in India, in which you may be out of luck.

Kiru, by region, are you talking about specific countries or states? If I bought a dvd player in Canada it should play in DVD's from say America shouldn't it?
- From: M (@ 24.64.158.52)
on: Sat Mar 24 15:43:11 EST 2001
Yes Aruvi. All DVD carries, say for example, all NTSC Region!!! USA is a NTSC region, so does Canada. In Asia/Europe, different system are used, either pal/secam. Even if it's digital, it needs to be converted to Analogue format, since many TVs are analogue.
- From: kiru (@ 64.166.86.152)
on: Sun Mar 25 20:22:35 EST 2001
aruvi,
Canada and USA and other US territories are in the same 'region'. Region in the DVD terminology spans countries. Check out the DVD FAQ http://dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html
Also, the region encoding is on top of the encoding for NTSC or PAL/SECAM. Usually, if you bought the player and DVD in the same place you should not have a problem. This is the intention of this copy protection mechanism.

guys
those who are planning to buy a vcd player , better buy a DVD player .
I just bought Alaipayuthey and ARR hits songs , both DVD's from Ayngharan videos .
Simply great , both video and audio quality were on par with ENglish DVD's .
and those who are planning to buy tamil dvd's , do not by any chance buy Pyramid DVD's . those are just VCD's transferred to DVD .
just my 2 cents ...
