Hi
thanks for bringing the discussions about the "uravenum pudiya raagam", "vaanengum " tunes, the tunes which were several years ahead of that particular time.
Yes, Raajaathi raaja had mostly average numbers, but I somehow ( don't know really how) always thought "vaa vaa vanji malarae" was something new and very experimental, some one with better music knowledge could explain.
" Singara velan" another "paavalar productions" again had couple of good compositions, although this was released more recently compared to the ones mentioned

"Ithazhil Kadhai Ezhudhum Neramidhu" - indha song-la edhum pudhumai illaiyaa? I used to think this song was very melodious and kinda different (adhudhaan ennannu theriyalai!) for the times when it came out.

hihi:) aka aruL, IR of the 80s did not have that disadvantage ofcourse.
True, 'kaNgaL iraNdum' has great violin interludes and that was in 'mannAthi mannan' (MSV-TKR) in '59. Gulebagavali ('57-'58) by MSV-TKR has 'Asayum en nEsamum' by Jamuna Rani that has a single violin counter melody, which was a novelty those days.
'vadivElum mayilum thuNai' by G.Ramanathan in 'Ambigapathi' (TMS) must have been certainly the first of the seemingly 'moochchu vidA' types and sounded so different inspite of the heavy classical base. Obviously, no track recording and one is overcome with deep reverence for TMS and GR.
The same movie had a duet by TMS-Bhanumathi ('vAdA malarE thamizh thEnE') in the sOga rAgam 'mugAri'. MSV-TKR followed this up 'kanavu kaNdEn nAn kanavu kaNdEn' in mugAri in Kannadasan produced movie 'sivagangai cheemai' ('59). If this is not trail blazing then what is ?

Prabhudas... Meenamma Meenamma (good trumpet score) and the Singaravelan songs have good WCM base in them.
I remember Raja saying that S.Velan songs have complicated orchestrations. Did it come around the symphony period?

'ithazh mottu virinthida' from 'bantha pAsam' sung by PBS & PS (MSV-TKR) had seconds and vocal counter melody for the first time in TFM. An innovation!!!

I think "Raasaathee" song from Thiruda Thiruda is the most innovative song of all times. The simple fact being that not even a single instrument was used in that song. Chorus & humming was put to maximum effect in that song. Great Work.

Karthi,
I have read some where that "Idhazhil kadhai" is based on Lalitha. The swara progressions and the build up of that song is very unique is what i read.
Prabhudas,
Singaravelan had two nice songs in my opinion."Innum ennai" and "Dhoodhu selvarathadai".
"Innum Ennai" had the same type of start as "Poongathavey thaazthiravai"..beautiful scream of violins..
I feel that "Chandirarum Sooriyarum" from Avadharam is a innovative song in the sense it has violin as rythm throughout the song..Any other song has this format??

HJ dared to copy ARR and surprised us at how gullible Tamil audiences are ;-)

Eden, Kiru...
Sorry for the late reply (these days am too lazy to substantiate through postings)
>>>I think the idea of IR not sticking to the `popular pop' sounds and structure of 80's could be that he wanted to have his `own identity'! His song should be known as his own and not similar to, say, George Michael, Phil collins, Stevie Wonder or Madonna...In fact, he would never have wanted himself to sound similar to BoneyM or Abba<<<
Maybe..but he was in the best position to incorporate or rather fuse new genres of music into his world of music...
but like Kiru has implied Folk, Carnatic and Western Classical itself has given IR an infinite world to explore and he preferred that.

'thAmtha theemtha Adum uLLam pAdum kAviyam' in pagalil Or iravu is certainly a daring effort by IR, with 30 chorus singers and only 3 instruments. Perfectly placed vocal harmony in the charanams decorate the already strong melody.

I thought the movie 'Soorasamharam' had some unique songs. They were nothing like IR's compositions before. They sounded completely different.
