In the latest edition of Kumudam, there's an article on a movie by a young director (one Janaki Viswanathan) titled, 'Kutti'., It addresses the issue of child labour through the life of a young girl named 'Kutti' who works as a maid servant. To bring in the audiences who may ignore this as an 'art' film, the director has roped in some 'known' faces like Koushalya, Ramesh Arvind, Vivek and Nasser. The MD is IR.
The BGM is apparently very very good and IR himself got moved by a certain scene that he asked the director if she would like him to to 'bring it out' in his own way. Karumbu Thinna kooliya? She said 'yes' and he apparently did wonders to the scene.
IR has been regularly helping out these first-time directors (remember his earlier work for a film institute student project?) working on their passionate subjects, mostly with shoe-string budgets... it's laudable.
Unfortunately for us, we never get to watch these films (forget a theatre release, these don't even come out in DVDs). As a result, we are deprived of his much-acclaimed BGM scores for these songless films!!! What a pity! I wish the producers/directors release the soundtracks of these films commercially. If half-baked GAna song albums and the so-called pop albums (nursery rhymes masquerading as pop music) by the sons and daugters of rich Chennai parents can be commercially released and promoted why not such genuine MUSIC?

Neels.
What should be done is , either IR or a recording company should start a dot-com and offer pay per download MP3s and streaming BGMs and other songs of IR for membership...this is feasible and IR is still a hot name. But who'll bell the cat ? This may be profitable too. I would've got into this but this is not my core-competency.

`Kutty' - The scene is when the child (who works as a maid servant) stands outside a school...longing to be inside but unfortunately can't...Raja got reminded of his own childhood of poverty and was moved...(as reported in Kumudham)

From rediff
Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja was screened in Madras last week by music maestro Ilaiya Raja
Any idea what this means? Is Raja involved with the movie in any way ...

Surprised to note some active members listening to Aadaan Adimai this late.
Anyway, as it has always been, IR's music is based on how good or bad a movie is. This film seems to be rural based. And after listening to the songs makes me feel that Manivannan wanted folk based songs which would help Satyaraj attract the mass.
I too liked Ennenna paada (inspite of Bhava and Harini, after all they are not too bad) and Unthan Raajiyathil. The remaining songs, going by the lyrics and the mood of the song, seem to suit the situation. And as STS said, they are quiet good, in the class of songs they belong to.
Moreover, the songs give a feel of some decent picturisation (with due credit to the lyricists). For a person of IR's class, and inspite of fans like us, I admire him for his firm stance on sticking to composing more Indianised music. It really takes lots of courage to compose music like that of Andaan Adimai without really caring for all the criticism...probably he is trying to drive some sense into us!!!

Happened to listen to Andan Adimai recently, very disappointing indeed.
Anne Anne Karuppane - is just a reversal of song 'Ayiram Thamarai' song
including chord progression- such a old formula music.
I it where 80s may be people would have to listen to it ,at this juncture
its way out of league or is it a old movie kept in shelves for long time ?
I dont want to comment most of the songs is same old song that we have heard before.
Not only that one of the song is very sarcastic abt a particular community
ofcourse they are a passive ones so not worry of some controversy(thats the last thing we need now)
Only saving grace is the song 'Undhan Rajjiythil'
this too is also old song from valli reworked.
(chord progression,orchestration)
why IR sir ,must be not in mood i guess :(
We dont need IR for this kind of music there are many out there who can give the same music.
Final words - Thumbs down ,not worth buying,Wasted Effort.

Correction!!
Actually the song 'Undhan Rajjiythil' resembles more like the song 'Kadavul Ullame Karunai Illame' from the movie 'Anbulla Rajinikanth'

I go with UV when I listened to Andaan Adimai. Pretty bad effort. But I found one pattern when I listened to this album and Usire. IR has started using his old way of compositions with those lovely violins, flute arrangements. Though they are not the way it used to be, this trend is a welcome one from him, from his bad synth and e-instruments he was using previously.

Like Swami says, the good thing is IR is back to real instruments - violins, flute, tabla. I really like the switch. But it looks like he is not composing new songs . Not only in this movie, but also in Usire and even in Friends. In this movie and Usire, he seems to have 're-orchestrated' some old songs. Maybe he is working on developing a new style. And I think this may not be just for movie songs. It must be directed towards his ambitions on the WCM side.

i recently read (monday) in "mathrubhumi" about a grand award ceremony to honour malayalam film artistes. i'm not sure if it was an annual fete or something to honour overall contribution.. mohanlal was awarded best actor, IR's award was given away by suneeta rao.. of course, IR didnt collect his award; it was collected by someone else on his behalf..

poor thing is most of the ears are accustomed to
hearing usage of umteen instruments without dominion of 1 tune, which all M.D.s, including,YSR,KR,are trying today, probably people are dragged to understand only such is music unlike music of I.R where only tune dominates with little instruments.
ATLEAST LISTENERS TO MUSIC MUST UNDERSTAND ,
OR BE ABLE TO DIFFERNTIATE WHICH STYLE OF PERFORMANCE IS REAL MUSIC THAT LASTS FOR YEARS.

one good thing in the article: for the first time ever, i see someone use the word "kOkka" instead of the incorrect "kOrkka"!

badri..whats plaguing IR these days is bad recording and insufficient 'marketing' . The example movie I can think of is 'kannA unai thEdugirEn'. Very nice songs, new sandhams from IR..but the whole song was electronically orchestrated and suffered in the publicity.
These days MDs are more into catchy songs like 'poo pOtta thAvani.' rather than 'putham puthu poo pooththathO' kind of melody. And we all understand IR is an overkill for just a catchy song..We expect and I think he wants to deliver more than that to the listeners.

kiru: yes. kaNNA unnaith thEdukiREn is a very good album which got left out because of poor marketing. :-( same with kAkkaich chiraginlE.

I echo your opinion. I reckon kaakkaich chiraginilae as IR's best in the past, say, 5 years. Pleasent singers (no Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan...), not much of beats, electronic stuff... on the whole, a very soothing work.
