Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Dear Y
I look at Rahman as the musician and not as the music director. from one musician to the other he is a genius what he does what he creates the technology he uses. hes working with andrew lloyd webber and that is no joke .... he is working with jackson and it takes someone of his calibre to do that.
ive heard stories of the way Ir composes background and how he composed the songs for ' hey ram ; after the songs were already picturised and kamal hassan had to drop l subramanium. he recorded the songs in sync with film and did such a good job . that takes something of a genius to do. lets not get too academic here.

DearMS
Loy and I were not involved with the music of Breathless. I played guitar on a couple of songs though. Breathless was created in the studio mind you the song is not sung in one breath. It has been recorded in 3 or 4 parts and carefuly created. The vocal track was joined in a couple of places.

Ehsaan,
Thanks for the reply. Though I am not satisfied with your answer, I can understand your brevity. What I was looking at was your exposition of particular skills of ARR and how something that he has done was mindblowing and completely original. Anyways, if you do find time at any point, please pick up one of ARR's songs that you particularly liked and explain to us what you found so very different and creative. Like, you were mentioning that AP song ' endrendrum punnagai'. In his yahoo groups, Pravin Mani mentionied that he kind of introduced ARR to that kind of sound / music ( am not sure what the geek word for that is) and ARR composed it. Actually, I wouild say PM was quite ambiguous about his contribution to that song. I mean, if it were completely ARR, he could have said so, but he did not, as far as I remember. Now that you liked that song, is it because of some genre that it falls in, or the way it has been built , something that struck you !!
Personally, it took me back into the 80's pop era and MJ style of composing and I really think it's way too cool!!! :)
Thanks dude and keep coming back ..
btw, I really dig that 'kadavul padhi' sung by Kamal in 'alav...'... especially, the point where he says ' nanda kumara' ..

"The song was not sung in one breath"..
Hmmm...and SM sighs (intentionally) at the end of the song :-))

>>>:) we never knew that "everything is tautly connected and written into the screenplay" until Ehsaan said so HERE did we? :)<<<
Maran...it doesnt take a genius to notice that in Kamal's serious films the songs are integrated into the screenplay - Hey Ram, Mahanadhi, Guna - we didnt get the usual commercial music - that's why I echoed what Ehsan had already stated.

I mean after hearing "Aalavanthaan"'s songs..u can make out that they are very situational...
even the "Africa kaatupuli" is not just an item song...the lyrics bring out the theme of the film as well as hint at things to happen...

Africa kaatupuli, the saranam reminds me of
a song from breathless, the chorus goes like this "oh thadhananana" i dont remember the start, I belive saranam was created by Shanker. I see both the songs have same style of music.
also I am begining to like this song.:)

Srikanth,
That's "Jaane kya hua". Yep it does sound like the same style. Still, it is a nice song. Simple and hummable.

In the Hindi version, the lyrics says it's Cheetah! "Cheeteh ke chhaal liye" (the gait of a Cheetah)...
The photographs of Manisha show her in a leopard/cheetah skin kind of costume.
Vairamuthu of course can get away with anything. Afterall, he is one step above kaviyarasu KaNNa DAsan.. He's the Kavi pEr arasu!!!
I want to know who came up with those silly jokes in the 'siri siri' song. Whether it was VM or Javed Akhtar. Usually bi-lingual films have the idea coming from one source and replicated in another language. The jokes just fall flat!

krish thanks for reminding it, it is a great song.
I think Shanker in the only tfm singer now who does not need anteris!:)..this man has got a gift to maintain such pitch control.
sukuwinder track that comes in 12B should have been given to Shanker, it would have rocked, wonderful tune wasted there by harris jayaraj.

The jokes were created by Javed Saab and Vairamuttu sir. Frankly I thought that that the ideas of jokes in a song sucked , at least in the cassette / cd version.

Ehsaan,
Was the reason for using just 2 singers (Shankar and Nandhini) other than Kamal due to budgetary constraints ?
- From: nandini (@ 210.18.40.159) on: Thu Sep 6 09:34:10 EDT 2001
hi there everybody..this is nandini here..i had the pleasure of singing the africa kaattupuli song in tamil and cheete ki chaal liye in the hindi version of kamal's movie aalavandaan/abhay..i decided to check out this forum after ehsaan told me about it..having read what has been said so far, i find the varying inputs and opinions pretty interesting..i'm very happy to know that most of u have liked the song i've sung..thanks a billion for that..well this is my second tamil film song , the first one being i love u from uyirodu uyiraaga..in response to some of the things that have been said earlier in the forum..there was no budget constraint for recording the songs as far as i know..besides me, shanker and kamal the album also features sujatha and mahalakshmi and ofcourse the backing vocals are done by dominique, clinton and friends..all these definitely don't happen in low budget soundtracks..
somebody earlier mentioned ramanujam and richard feynman while referring to 'geniuses'..if somebody things maths and phy people are the only geniuses born on this planet "surely you're joking Mr. !!!!..@#$%"..well i have had the pleasure of majoring in abstract mathematics in my post grad and let me tell u there can be geniuses in music as well(actually i don't need to be an MSc (maths) to tell u this)..look at miles davis, chick corea or even the steely dan guys becker and fagen..maybe u should let us know what level of intelligence and output u r looking at before u accept somebody as a genius ..i'm not getting into the argument whether arr in particular is a musical genius or not..but even this can be pretty subjective don't u think?..the bottomline here is each person is entitled to have his opinion which may or may not coincide with urs or mine (why does it have to?)..
i'd love to hear more from all of you and we shall surely keep in touch
bye guys
nandini

Hi Nandini,
Welcome to this forum. First and foremost,
Thanks a million for rendering tamil as tamil. . Hope it is picturized perfectly.
Yes you are rigth "good music" is very subjective.
it is different from person to person.
cosmician , low budget!, :)
this is Shanker , top of the line singer in south.
kamal...he is also costly :)

About Nandini Srikar (Interesting background), I found:
PANAH (Magnasound): When American Black music is mixed with a Sufi feel, a strange amalgam develops. This album has that in good measure. In fact, it has a bit of everything from rock to pop to R&B, country, rap, gypsy, trance and Indian film music.
The singer is Nandini Srikar, who is basically a musician and has started her vocal career only recently. She is India’s first woman sessions guitar player having played the 12-string guitar on albums like Hariharan’s "Kaash" and Shaan’s "Tanha Dil". She has collaborated with Trilok Gurtu and Aally Badarou of Level 42 on a world music album.
Music is by Mahmood Khan who has spent 15 years working in the music studios of Los Angeles. His album, "Only One" featuring the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had become an instant hit and was played by over 250 radio stations across the USA.
The album is titled "Panah", which means sanctuary or refuge, but most of the songs reflect the concept of search and struggle. Mahmood is the writer, sound engineer and producer. The simple lyrics have the pretensions of being philosophical. Mahmood speaks of the emotions of a mother trying to fill in the spaces that a father’s absence causes in a child’s life (Is pyaar mein …) or of God’s existence.
What matters most is that both music and the vocals are so very different from the run-of-the-mill stuff.

Nandini,
How long did it take for you to rehearse and sing this(Africa..) song?Do you improvise a lot while singing?
I read somewhere people who learn abstract mathematics can see the world with a different set of eyes. They see patterns emerging around things which have been random.(Have you seen the film "PI"?)What do you think abt that?
BTW,this is not a serious question. But would like to hear a fun and/or serious reply?:-)
- From: kiru (@ 192.138.149.4) on: Thu Sep 6 11:04:09 EDT 2001
Nandini. let me reiterate what Srikanth said..good job with that tamil rendition. MSc Mathematics hey..and you have read that book too..okay now we are very comfortable talking to you :) :) (Note most of us here are math/engg/cs majors).
Just to let you know we might live in another country surrounded by music of different genres (and if you drive through Oakland, you cannot help listening to Rap :)) but we still love our language, culture and music..So go easy on that accent :) (BTW, did I hear that 'I love u' tune somewhere before ??)
Ehsaan said you could even write lyrics..can we get to read something you have written ? Especially if it is in tamil. I dont care if it is in English (I am not that 'cool' :) ). Lyric writing has been a male-dominated profession I am looking forward to women breaking that stronghold..same goes for composing..I think we will see a different perspective
Thanks for stopping by !!!
