Some more IR's great flute pieces :
1. manjal nilaavukku indru orE sugam - 1st interlude
2. puththam puthu kaalai - 1st & 2nd
3. aasaiyai kaaththula thoothu [is it really flute ?]
4. ninnukkOri varnam
5. chinna chinna vaNNakkuyil
BTW, IR violin use paNNatha pattukkaL romba kuraivu.... Is it already discussed in any of the thread?

maybe it's not strictly qualified as an 'interlude', but the starting instrumental piece before the song "poove sempoove" in "solla thudikkudhu manasu" is mindblowing..

I am also a fan of IRs flute pieces in TFM. Whenever I buy speakers I test them out to see the flute sound comes out well. Needless to say that I love 'Nothing But Wind'. I listen to track # 4 (Composers Breath) in repeat mode often times.
r.ravi - a very good observation about the clattering sound of flute in the 'nothing but wind' track. Actually, if you have a good system (mine is not that great) you could hear the flute falling down and rolling away from you. Also, in the beginning of the song you could hear a bird circling around. I think Ilayaraja has tried some good sound engineering here (ofcourse, within the limits of the equipment he has had).
People think ARR is the only good person in sound engineering. But 'Nothing but Wind' has some good instances of IRs sound engineering ideas. Actually, IRs is more musical whereas ARR is just technical (just my humble opinion).

Kriba you are right. I many times try to decipher Rajas songs and still am wondering as to what the notes were and what were the instruments.Wel, such subtelities would go un-noticed in the Tamil mass but then he did it, coz that was involuntary for him .. a genius and a born musician i say.

Ravi,
Its a pity that our country/land is in a situation where we are not in a position to appreciate good music. Our economic situation does not permit us to spend/time money on music. Ofcourse, the low literacy does not help either.
I only wish Ilayaraja is not under the impression that we dont 'really' enjoy his music and feels more appreciated than just the good amount of money he is making.
His music is a enigmatic and intriguing at times as it is entertaining. So there is a lot left to explore.

Yes, He is a fantastic musician in using the flute in a right way.. especially the back ground music he chooses the right tune with flute only.. I can challenge anybody in the world that nobody could use the flute as fine as Ilayaraja..
Hope The Great Raja will come soon with the Past fame into the music world..
Like u one of the fans of the Great Raja..

Hi everybody !
Has anyone of you heard the song "Aadhi sivan tholirukkum naaga mani naaga mani" from the controversial tamil moview "KADAVUL"...?
The song's first interlude is an absolutely heartthrobbing flute piece by the maestro.. Would like to hear the views of those of you who have listened to this song...
By the way, another song in the same movie.. "ENAKKU ORU RAASAA VENUM.." is a mind boggling manipulation of percussion instruments by the maestro.. But apparently, not many people would have got an opportunity to listen to this song..
thank you..

I loved all the songs in kadavuL. This is what I wrote about Adhi sivan in the reviews thread long time ago.
"Adhi Sivan ThoLil -- This is a surprise after the above two's
sophisticated feel. This starts with udukkai
and a karnatic twist in the pallavi's first
line. Then there is a slight pause and a
beautiful flute piece caresses the song.
Again a glorious flute piece in the second
interlude enhances the song's listenability."

The song "Maunamelanoyi" in Saagara Sangamam(Salngai Oli in Tamil - I'm talking about the sexy song where Jayaprada dreams about Kamal) has excellent flute pieces. I haven't heard such flute pieces for a long time. Its a pity that IR has stoppeed giving such great pieces nowadays; one of the bad things that ARR seems to have brought with him is the new kind of flute sound (I call it the "passionate flute") which is horrible to say the least.Of course, IR should know better than to be influenced by it. In general, his interludes nowadays are tending use the keyboard a lot and the flute and violin, less - that's very unfortunate.

IR's best BGM in Telugu was for Swarnakamalam. Director K Viswanath. ( Bhanupriya and Venkatesh) I dont know the dubbed movie name in Tamil. Whenever hero meets heroine the flute BGM is the best I have ever heard of IR.Excellent BGM for an excellent movie.
If you give just couple of violins,a tabla and a flute to IR he will create wonders out of them. I dont think he requires anything other than these things.

Check out for the flute piece in "thalattuthey vaanam'" from Kadal meengal eventhough it is small piece but the way raja has mixed it with the total orchestra is just great and you will notice it preceedes the music in the 1st interlude but it is played in the last part of the 2nd interlude.

The flute interludes of "Saaradendupaadi" from the movie "Kaliyoonjaalu" are deadly. They are very different kinds of pieces, a kind I've never heard before. I am very interested in knowing what the situation was, for that song. Anyone knows?

Hey TFMlovers,
How did you guys forget the flute interlude in "Povoma Urgolam" (chinnathambi)? That bit is supposed to be the flutist's (Arunmozhi) favourite. One more striking flute bit is in the song "kaadal kavithaigal padithhidum neram" from gopura vasalile.

yeah, shankar
i remember that scene. beautifully done, with terrific music. and that song, antha nilaavaththaan naan kaiyilee, man! what interludes! think BR did justice to raaja's music for once, by avoiding his usual "nandanamnandanamnandanam" with angels jumping up and down in slow motion!
once in a lifetime coming together of nadigar thilagam, Ir and BR. wish it would hapen again.

I don't disagree that IR uses the flute and violins THE BEST in TFM. However, I don't see any necessity to bad mouth ARR (in comparison) to state that IR uses the flute well. Actually ARR has used the flute very effectively and with a lot of variety. Please listen carefully to the BGMs of the following songs and you could see vast variety in the use of flute - variety I daresay that even the great IR has not shown us in tone quality.
1. Anbe anbe - Kadhal Desam
2. Anjali anjali - Duet (especially the concluding piece
3. Kangalil enna eeramaa - Uzhavan (2nd BGM)
4. Ennavaley - Kadhalan
Any comments guys ?

Oops I almost forgot. Also Puththam pudhu Boomi from Thiruda Thiruda (flute prelude). On a different topic, how about them violins in Veerapaandi kottayiley and Guitar (I think it is slap) in Thee Thee from the same movie. This guy ARR is gooood too!.
If anybody badmouths MSV, IR or ARR for their overall talent (instead of a particular composition),I think they are only casual listeners and not genuine connoisseurs of film music.
