An interesting tidbit from IR's new book Paal Nila Padhai:
IR talks about his association with John Scott and Michael Townend, during the recording of the Symphony.
He says he spoke to John Scott in 2000 again, asking whether he can come for the recording of HeyRam with Budapest Symphony. Though John Scott wished much so, he had to regret his not coming, bcos of other recording commitments.
But he told Raja 'I still listen to your Symphony, when I get a creative block. Even 2-3 days back also, I was humming your melodies while going for my walk'.

I read Raja's 'Paal Nilap Paadhai' this weekend and liked it a lot !
I wrote a review - in tamil for an eZine, So I can't publish it here as it is ... So If somebody can volunteer to translate in English ... that would be great !

Producer Nitin Manmohan has apparently 'acquired' the rights for Sethu and are roping in (don't be shoked) Salman Khan to do Vikram's role!!!
Again, like innumerable incidents in the past, the original creator or music director (Bala and IR, in this acse) are not going to be acknowledged.

Paal Nila Paadhai – Review By Nagas.
Documenting the feats of great achievers, their life experiences, and their struggles is something that will stand in good stead for generations to follow. And needless to say, apart from inspiring aspirants in the same field (as the achiever), such documentations spread the light of hope & encouragement for anyone with a mission and anyone taking determined steps towards realizing his mission. Such documentations help in sowing seeds of determination in young minds, teaching them valuable lessons like “perseverance is success” and “sincere efforts always pay rich dividends”.
As a musician, Ilaiyaraaja has achieved stunning feats. He has an enviable fan following that sways to his lullabies till date. He is a musician who has taken a deep plunge into the oceans of carnatic, western classics & folk and has been immensely successful in offering the gem he found in simplified form, a form that common man would understand. And when one considers the fact that the seeds of this gigantic & towering Banyan tree was actually planted in a small village called Pannaipuram, it multiplies your awe about the massiveness of the current manifestations. The life story of Ilaiyaraaja is a story about how a man born ordinary, reached the elite club of the extraordinary, and is must-read for youngsters who are raring to realize their dreams.
Sangeedha Kanavugal, Vetta velidhanil Kottikidakkudhu, Vazhithunai are some of the earlier literary works of ilaiyaraaja, the latest addition being Pal Nila Paadhai. This book is based on random notes that ilaiyaraaja made on what he learnt from life & music, which he has aggregated selectively and re-worked into this book.
Though giving an appearance of an auto biography, the book does not follow a time sequence and narration just moves on from one incident to another seamlessly. When one finishes reading the book, one gets the strong feeling that ilaiyaraaja has ample stuff in store to write more such books, as indicated by Bharathiraaja too in the preface.
The book talks about several interesting memories & issues, starting from ilaiyaraaja s childhood memories of yelamalai hill, his strong urge for music in his youth that made him make his own flute by making holes in bamboo with red hot iron rod, the way he used to try to grasp music by singing tunes of other MDs and correcting his own, the gratitude for people that helped his poverty stricken family, the way he passed the music exam with steely determination & humility etc. Ilaiyaraaja has also discussed critical issues like how cinema world is hell bent on focusing only on that artist who gets the most thunderous applause at that moment of time, and how he feels about having to work with directors who were repetitive & wanted music for run-of-the-mill situations.
Ilaiyaraaja has initiated philosophical debates too, like the question about the linkage between how glamorously famous a person is and his actual real talent. Ilaiyaraaja has also discussed about personalities that awe inspire him, friends that he had to let go, foreign musicians, stage drama days of his youth and other interesting incidents (like the day when he had to come to the recording studio with stitches in his stomach). While he has discussed about the accolades he has received under the title suyapuranam or self-history, he has also discussed the insults he has suffered without inhibitions. This only reveals this man to be a balanced personality.
The book mentions about folk songs collected by paavalar varadharasan, brother of ilaiyaraaja. Ilaiyaraaja recalls one line from one such folk songs, which describes a thick forest. The line says that the forest is so thick that if a fly were to pass by, its wings would be broken (yee pugundha iragu odiyumm). He mentions that he somehow lost possession of those folk song collections of his brother.
In the later portions of the book, Ilaiyaraaja mentions how during Sivaji funeral procession some one shrieked - oh the treasure of Tamilnadu is going (towards graveyard) [Thamizhnaatin pokkisham pogudhu]. His discussions on who will get what reputation and why (with respect to the film world) deserves a mention and is worth pondering further.
When ilaiyaraaja describes about two instances when he had to talk in opposition of MGR, two perspectives emerge about the two personalities involved. While ilaiyaraaja comes out as a strong personality who will bow down only to love, MGR comes out as a magnanimous personality who understood this quality of Ilaiyaraaja and accepted him as it is.
The way Ilaiyaraaja has given calculated information while describing incidents only reveals that he has the knack of a short story writer. Especially, the descriptions about elamalai hills, funeral procession of sivaji etc paint the experiences vividly as if you were virtually watching it yourself. And as if to make the readers stop and think occasionally, ilaiyaraaja has planted timely statements that are profound. For instance, he asks the readers - Did we pay any monetary price to Kamban, Bharathi, Valluvar for their songs that we learnt in our school days? Another good example of this writing technique of raja is the statement where he writes - If the worth of a person being praised is dependent on the worth of the one who praises, u better not call it self-worth in the first place. Similarily, the book has some rare photos too.
Though ilaiyaraaja has used good thamizh & narration style that sustains your interest, the usage of English in some chapters is excessive. The book has been designed beautifully. Good quality paper and good quality print that does not spoil even the black & white pictures. But the sore point is, there are umpteen spelling errors & typos, so much that u wish they appended an annexure on spelling/typo correction. Also, sufficient attention has not been paid in segregating chapters.
When one reads the lengthy write-ups on accolades he has got till date, it will make his fans happy, but it might bring a disapproving frown to a regular reader. But it sounds justifiable when ilaiyaraaja brings in the argument by thamizh thaatha, which says,“those with proficiency & knowledge are committing a sin when they themselves declare their talent. If they did not, then that knowledge might fade into the unknown oblivion.” Quite a valid point that.
In this book Raja points out that describing music is very simple. It is good, or it is not. If you want to describe this book using the same method - It sure is one good book from ilaiyaraaja.
