makkaLs, Listened to 'andhap puram' (tamil). Sounds good. moththam anju paattu. mooNu song thEruthu! [1) azhagE un mugam paaramal, 2) thai thaga thai, 3) B side'la first song (its a good one)]
. Very les synth
. No bhava ;))
. Unusually decent recording for a dubbed IR movie!
. pazhani bharathi's lyrics arent cheap, but neither sounds like a kavithai, nor fits in the tune! [esp.ly azhagE un mugam kaaNaamal]
. B-side-first song [naalu vaatti kEttum gyabagaththula nikkaatha lyrics ;(] has good humming, but percussion'Oda Odi varum andha keyboard could be Karthik Raja [The technique reminded of 'sandhanam thEchchaachchu, maamaa' frm manickam]
If you are a moderate IR fan, better buy it.

I happened to listen to Kaakai Chiraginile. I liked 2 songs - "Kolakiliye" and "Oranjaaram". Both had very good tunes. However, esp. in the latter, the so-called "folk" style of singing and the lyrics lessened the impact. I don't know why there is this trend of singing in pseudo(?) folk style. This seems to have started after Inji idupazhagi of Devar Magan. I feel that the properly sung folk songs of the 80s had as much(if not more) "man vasanai" as these.
Kolakiliye also had muslim sounding keyboards - another thing I did not like.

Recently I bought Friends CD. It did not have the song Managalam kunnil Ganapathy by MGS. Would somebody know why that is? (Shibu has that song in his site though!)
Also, is Anthapuram in Tamil different from the recent Anthapuram in Telugu?

Oh my God! those three songs are building in me! They are just too good, esp.ly "azahgE un mugam paaramaal" and "ammamma kaadhal vandhadhum pOthum"! Dont miss them!
And "thai-thaga-thai" is in par with Guru (malayalam)'s narapali song (thaththaaram)!
Dont miss andhappuram (tamil) and make sure that u listen it in a walkman for better building effects ;))

Raja fan!
Mangalam kunnil is neither a song from `Friends' nor it is by IR. It is included in the cassette with a note `from Sargam's music bank' (music by some X)! If Shibu lists that under IR, it's got to be a mistake!

Vijay and ShibuTN,
Thanks a bunch for the links.
some quick reviews of recent IR albums:
Rajasthaan
Jinchilaara - The main tune has fluid jazz keyboards, but in the middle the song delves into Karthik Raajaism--an asynchronous insertion of irrelevant folk instruments. And someone should remind Mano that he doesn't sound cool when he sings in a cocky manner.
Sorgaththil Nikka - Shankar Mahadevan is a real find for TFM. His voice is a throwback to TFM's early years. The tune itself is spirited in the vein of "Aattamaa Theroattamaa".
Pennendraal - My favorite song in the album. Though I was also irked by the hollow sounds of keyboards, the music is still unique and the sandham is one of the better ones from IR since Poonthoattam. The transition in the middle to folk instruments is very nicely done (as opposed to this being a problem in "jinchilaara")
Jai Javan Jai - The now-routine patriotic number. The music serves the song's purpose, I guess, nothing new. I could swear I heard Malaysia Vaasudevan in the background vocals, is it true or is Hariharan also doing voice modulation.
Machan Machan - Speaking of voice modulation, Janagi shouldn't try it. But, alas, she does here and sounds so outlandish. Easily the worst in the album.
Overall, IR shows a pulse of enthusiasm here that I haven't noticed in his work in the past few months. If only he had found a lyricist with pride this album would have soared above the ordinary. I found inane lyrics to be a blaring, overwhelming drawback in this album.
Kaakkaich Chiraginilae
Kolak Kuyilae - a curious song with folksy lyrics, fast techno interludes, and relaxed singing by SPB (does this man ever age?) A truly enjoyable return by IR to subtle arrangements that accentuate the singing.
Paadith Thirindha - IR sang this, which means the usual, the tune is catchy and easy to sing, whether he should've sung it, well I won't go there. The flute, strings (guitar, violin, and mandolin?), gadam and other percussion instruments give this song a great mood of deep devotional longing. This one has the best music of all the tracks.
Gaayathiri Kaetkum - My favorite song in the soundtrack. Very low-key, subdued music. Sounds like IR has come to a certain peace with keyboard music. And Unni is on a roll this year, he launches another winner here. Is tabla a purposeful omission from this soundtrack?
Oranjaaram - SPB, with his colloquial grace, nails this vacillating sandham like it's a simple song. I would've enjoyed it so much more if the silly English-laden lyrics were replaced. This song reminded me of "Jaathi Mallip Poocharamae" for the surprising shifts in the sandham (disclaimer: no I don't mean this is a copy)
A majority of the songs are well written which add so much to the enjoyment of these songs. Who's the lyricist?
All in all, this shows IR at a certain crossroad in his career. After many experiments that were joyful (Poonthoattam) and otherwise (Kaadhal Kavidhai), this one shows him coming to terms with his future direction. It warms the heart to see a complacent master return to his true form with renewed faith. Good for him. Good for us. Good for music.

Udhaya,
How did you miss "oor oora pogum" sung by Sandhya? Also, "Paadith thirintha" has a SPB version also. This will be real feat as the same SPB, who had sung other 2 happy/jolly songs would have sung this with a real pathos note! Really, this man is incomparable!!!
And, I heard Bharani also. There are 5 songs in the album. One solo number by Raaja - Thaenaa Odum Odakkarayil..." is "OUTSTANDING". The same song will be repeated by Sujatha. Then there is one Solo KSC song...Good. Other 2 songs are dappankuththu type. I liked "Nadu raathiriyil suthudhadi..." sung by AM,SNS,Devi.

Ramesh.S,
I couldn't find the two songs you've mentioned in the site where I listened to "Kaakkaich Chiraginilae". I only reviewed what I heard and assumed was the entire soundtrack. I wish I had heard the other two, especially "Paadith Thirindha" by SPB must be great.
