Song Interludes

I know, I know, there are people here in TFM who use their analytical knives to rip apart songs ... and lyrics... and interludes...and BGMs.
Now, I hope to make these same 'knowledgeable' folks discuss interludes in songs. Some songs I believe have interludes that dont reflect the 'mood' (like Eeramana Rojave...)and in some others the interludes takes the songs to great heights (Poove, Sempoove or veerapandi Kottayile)... also some MDs are very concerned about Interludes(ARR!) whether for some it is a matter of filling time till the next stanza.
I hope the interludes of various songs and their fluidity and their relevance to the picturisation on screen can be discussed here.

  Good observation!Poonthottam, IMO, is a much under-rated album. I felt that something was different about "iniya malargal" but couldnt fix what because of my ignorance about music ...thanks for explaining it.

  I can't do the same with yours :)). You may address me as MS (bb did it first). hope you heard the interludes of "vaanaththu tharagaiyo". They are highly incomprehensible. I adore "Y2K" and "Meettadha" because I have not heard something like them before. Especially the former one is has one percussion interlude (before the "mere pyaree muniyamma") which is something which comes from a creator only.

  I too felt 'oh baby baby' was very good. I couldn't understand the technicalities, but was sure something about this song was very special. Probably I liked it for the reason Murali explained.

  The interludes in the following songs are just awesome.
  1. kOvil mani Osai thanai kEttathArO , kizhakkE pOgum rayil. It is one of the best melody by IR which makes one listen to the song over and over and ...
  
  2. senthAzham poovil vanthAdum thendRal , muLLum malarum. Excellent flute, violin pieces
  
  3. sevvanthi poomudicha chinnakkA, 16 vayathinilE. The second interlude has mesmerizing piece of orchestration.
  Of course there are many ..

  kovil mani osai is set in the raaga sudha saaveri, perhaps the first song in that raga from IR. its a very pleasant raga and the other gems include 'kadhal mayakkam' from pudumai penn, 'manamagale' from devar magan, and 'sithagathi pookale' from raajakumaran.

  eeramana rojaave is supposed to be a song sung due to unrequited love, right?
  how come the interlude gets ore cheerful and excited?

  Hope many are aware of "maanguyiley poonguyiley". In the SPB solo version - the second interlude starts with Nadhaswaram "running" with thavil at an eerie pace just paving way to the guitar and flute. The flute piece, I think is coherent with the hero seeing the heroine. It is brilliant. I have not heard a similar one in any of the songs IR - I mean a pacy one.

  the interlude in two songs from 16 vayathinile are killingly awesome. they are: "manjakkuLichchu alli mudichchu" and "aattukutti muttai yittu". somehow these numbers are rarely talked about.

  dont know which ( 1st or 2nd), but 'yaar veettu roja...' from Idhayakoyil has some explosive violin bit.

  One amazing interlude by ARR: "Thoda thoda" song from Indira - its first interlude is very catchy, at the same time it is strangely tuneless.

  Of all the six songs in MVU, I'll rate the Koottukkuilai kattil vittu...(HH&chorus) song the last. Still, it has the best of the interludes - esp. the second one. It's a treat to WC lovers and another chance to appreciate the variety that IR possess.

  Since I play keyboards, I am always intrigued by interludes of any song (because I have some role to play). Most often than not, we can predict (esp in Ilaiyaraja songs) that a violin or flute or guitar piece will follow in sequence (may be because I am used to listening to many of his songs). I have figured 4 diff styles followed by him (I mean IR).
  
  1. The rhythm continues throughout the song (either the same format or with a different format); no stoppage whatsoever in one/more interludes: For example:
  1st interlude of Veetuku Veetuku Vaasapadi venum
  1st interlude of Inji Iduppazhagi
  
  2. The rhythm does not exist during most parts of one/more interludes (and mostly driven by melody/chords/bass). For example:
  both interludes of Poomaalaye ThOL Serava
  both interludes of Oh Butterfly Butterfly
  2nd interlude of Anjalin Anjali Anjali
  both interludes of Oh Priya Priya
  both interludes of Nilave Vaa Selladhey Vaa
  
  3. The rhythm temporarily stops at the start of one/more interludes (for a measure or two) and then starts (either the same or different format). For example:
  both interludes of Enna Satham Indha neram
  both interludes of Mannil Indha Kaadha Andri
  
  4. The rhythm is totally different during one/more interludes. For example:
  2nd interlude of ILaya Nila Pozhigiradhey
  2nd interlude of Sangeedha Megam Thensindhum Neram
  
  There are hundreds of songs which come into each of these above categories; I've just given 2 to 3 in each. Rest is left as an exercise of the reader :-)
