Yesterday on Sun TV...they were playing Revathi hits...and that beautiful number from "Avatharam" was played..."Thenndral vandhu theendum..."..is that a folk song with Pop flavour ? I think "Nethu Oruthara Oruthara.." is also folk with pop flavour....
BTW I heard KR mention in an interview that IR had asked him to provide the synthesized instrumentation for "Thenndral vandhu theendum..."..

>>>You and me will keep appriciating K for an other decade also, but will hesitate to buy a cassette, if a new film with such music formula comes now.<<<
Very True !

I too agree with cosmician about the newer trend - I don't have original cassette of 'Villup Paattuk Kaaran'., But I do have 'Sangamam' :-)
But does that prove that Sangamam had a good folk-thanam in its songs ? I still believe 'kizakku semaiyiley' is the only folk album(I am not talking about 'folk songs' here) that ARR gave - in all other such attempts - karuththammaa, Sangamam, uzavan, Taj mahal etc., his expertise in POP and/or fusion music took over folk skills.,
All IMHO.,

i bought 'naattuppurappattu' and 'veerathalaattu'. simply because YOU won't buy them, why do you assume that others won't? go to rural areas and ask.

mahabs,
I agree with you and I too have that collection with me :-)
The intention here is not to hurt your feelings/taste., Just compare number of people who bought Karagaattak kaaran and number of people who bought this combo ... Thats what Common Friend is trying to convey.,

Actually, most of IRs folk songs are not purely folk. They can by played by any western musician. It is just that the instruments are authentic, but the playing follows the 12 note/octave system with chord backing. For eg. ooru vittu ooru vanthu kAthal kiithaal pannAthiinga in karakAttakkaran. Do you think any folk musician can play that ? No, Musicians have to know western way of playing to play that song. It is a very harmoniously rich song. POP songs cannot match this song in rhythm and harmony.

Kiru..
How do you define a POP song ?

Again, for God's sake don't compare these two films. Now-a-days generations change every year.

Cosmician,
'thendral vanthu theendum bothu' is not a 'folk song with a pop flavour'. It is a WCM-based song. It sounds folkish probably because of IR's voice.

cosmician..I did use the word POP. But can you take this up as an exercise and do a writeup on various categories. Simple HTML doc would do. POP is a 'genre' recognised by Grammy awards. Maybe their website says what is the criterion for this. Even though these definitions may not be related to TFM, it will help us understand the various kinds of songs we hear in TFM.

Agreed Kiru..but I want your understanding of POP music..
My understanding is it stems from the word "popular" and representing the term given by western sociologists for the consumerist culture that led to different kinds of art movements mostly represented by Andy Warhol and Rock music starting I think in the 50s
So then maybe all film music is POP music !

Ravi...the film's story was mostly rural..that's why I felt that

"thendral vandhu theendum podhu" is based on jonpuri raga (HCM)--IMHO. It is only because or IR it sounded like western/folk etc. IMHO this song is definitely one of the best 10 of IR and this album itself is 1 of the best 10 of IR. Even though I don't like his voice very much, his voice was very apt for this film. Pity that this film was not a commercial hit.

Nasser has good ideas - "Avatharam", "Devathai" but fails a bit in the execution...I think he has to become more tech savvy - a la Maniratnam
