Tamil film songs are, whether based on classical raagas, folk or contemporary tunes, melodious. That is to say, with some reservation, there is only melody in them. The other aspect - mood is largely absent. But some songs are exceptional. `Paar magale paar` is a great song with an ideal combination of mood and melody. But these types of songs are few and far between.
The arrival of ARRahman in Indian music scence is indeed epoch-making. Songs after songs he blends beautifully, mood and melody. By introducing new voices, he adds a new touch of vibrancy, youth, excitement and various other moods, while not loosing appropriateness to the lyrics. Listening becomes a new experience, easily identifying the nature of the songs and get abosrbed in the background.

Here is an excerpt from Merle Haggard interview- an ageing country music superstar, in the SanFrancisco Chronicle sunday edition.
-----------
With these musicians these days, theres a lot of catering to the bubblegum side of life rather than paying tribute to the older guys whose they used before they had any of their own. I dont see that happening, more from a lack of thought than a lack of desire. Mostly, I hear people want to know how much money does it generate and does the desired age bracket like it. We've got to give them their pablum. y'know.
It is going away and it is worthy of being passed down. But the quality of things we did compared with whats going on today ..His voice drifted off.
All the patterns have been laid and cut and all the trails blazed, I guess, he continued. They just take the beaten paths and make them ELECTRONICALLY perfect. (The last two words are spoken with utter comtempt)
Everybody's always wanting to know how to get into country music, Haggard said. I want to know how to get the f--- out of country music.

Does this apply to TFM ?

Saravanan,
Unakenathaane song is my favorite. more than tune, bavam (what is the english word) is very impotant. IR did very well. no one else could have sung that song with that bavam. And then is Jenncy. Really great work. In the same movie, Chamak Kozi is also very good song.
ARR too did something in simillar. "Vennilavin Theril Yeri Kaathal Theivam" is also good. KJY did very well.
Vaarthai Thavari vittai is also very good song. All the songs from that movie are good songs.

How about "Nitham Nitham Nellich Choru" song?

Excellent music of ARR always excellent. I believe only ARR can give the real beat so it is may choice always.

i do not mean that one would cry over paruvamae song. it is a simple melody without much orchestation. the kind nobody has tried after that, even IR.
it is so refreshing like a morning sunrise in markazhi.

"Paruvame" is a beautiful number...this was the IR we were looking for in the 90s....ARR has inherited this style and simplicity of music making...IMHO and not meant to start a comparison war !

Actually I now can visualize how an IR-ARR combo in a film can work out ! We can expect a beatiful treat..

your idea is great. i don't think it will be materialised. egos of IR (mainly) and ARR would not allow this to happen.
'paruvamae' and 'oh, butterfly' (to some extent 'oru jeevan thudikkuthu') they are so similar in structure.

mahabs,
what do you mean-without much orchestration?
listen to the song once again-there is a full scale orchestra for all the interludes.i have always thought that this song was one of IR's richly orchestrated song.

Yaaro...
Mahabs meant the main rhythms...it is just the sound of the joggers feet...beautiful....one more flash of the future from IR and of course you are right..the interludes were richly orchestrated..I only remembered this song when I'd seen the film as a kid in the theatre...the tune stuck to my mind even then..so after being reminded I downloaded the song today thru Napster and enjoyed every bit of it !

Kiru...that excerpt sounds like the ravings of any senile oldie...
of course...bubble gum culture..he is right..but don't you think that finally real music wil survive...electronic or not....? Sincerity and Creativity will live forever no matter it is natural or electronic..so if you are trying to hint something by putting the word ELECTRONICALLY in capitals......
