A curious question. It is commonly perceived that THE BEST of IR's hit songs came in the 78-82 period. Why is it so?
It does appear that IR songs of this period had lengthy pallavis with heavy orchestration(consider 'Ore naal unai naan, Kanmaniye kaathal enbathu, Poonthaliraada, songs from Alaigal oivathillai, Nizhalgal, etc). The post-85 songs had pallavis that were more or less toned down and gradually culminated with greater emphasis on melody in the charanams.

Point! Nowadays, probably the 'different kind of music' is the reverse of what it was in the late 70s-early 80s. Most likely if a new MD were to enter the field and give stress on instrumental EASTERN, he would become an overnight hit.
Yah right! I wish! Haven't you noticed that all albums containing classical Indian music as the backbone bomb due to the pathetic tastes of the Tamil audience?
Actually, youths cannot be blamed entirely for the degradation in TFM. There are youths like myself that would rather listen to music from IR and others of his caliber. It's the fault of the MDs! They ASSUME that youths are the ones that're going to make their music *hit*. Thus, they assume that they like fast-paced techno trash. I really don't believe that all youths, or even most youths will fall for that crap, especially considering that all different MDs will reuse the same techniques over and over again to no end. IF someone could give scientific data which CLEARLY SHOWS that youths want heavily technological songs with heavy Western influence, then I may change my opinion. Until then......

76 to 82, especially radio srilanka was one factor, i would say, when they played all kinds of IR songs not even heard on oour Ungal Viruppam. Plus, radio Srilanka used to bring up controversies about IR's copied songs - Darling, Darling, especially.
But, that period was the age of innocence and Chennai was just really very beautiful and simple, it became crowded a few years later. The point is, IR' folkish best was then, but his structurally best and more sound compositions came in the late 80s thru late 90s upto Desiya Geetham. From 85 to 89, IR was flirting around with cheaper orchestration and ordinary rhythms, was it when Rahman joined? I think so!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, 76 to say 85, IR' gave us folk Tamilnadu in a spontaneous fashion that which he did not repeat in the latter years and is a treasure for world music.

OISG,
What is it with Ramarajan, Rajkiran, P. Vasu, etc.? Why do you say working with them 'make your ideas shrink?' I don't understand. Could you please clarify? Thanks.

PVasu is very melodramic . That might be one constraint for IR. But with Rajkiran, I think IR has done wonderful in all his movies like AKili, ERaasathaan etc. The constraint with RK and RR is the songs got to be rustic .Only IR /MV has to sing. He can't have class singers like SPB
