Ha ha, I'm 70 yrs wiser reading your (+rjay, kiru et al) splendid interactions in the other thread, so keep going.
Btw, i knew what vocal harmony was. Was always a pleasure shadowboxing with you; old habits die hard, you see. Otherwise, I won't measure upto the HCIRF tag... and you know what it means for me to lose that..

'smaiyai, magnet vizhiyay' and the lyrics is superb?!! - typical prejudiced rediff review.

The reviews in rediff for the most part are aimed at selling more CDs and cassettes. For them almost everything is good and a "must" buy.
Marketing ..... period.

vijay :
I personally dont think the quality of TFM lyrics these days is very good. But we have to accept that more and more foreign language words have come into the usage very frequently even in general conversaitons. This is reflected in lyrics too. I dont agree the usage of "jumbalakka", "humma" or "mukkala" - the words which make No sense..
Lets take the lyrics "Magnet vizhiyal manadhai thirudi vittai"... a close substitute for the word magnet is "kaandha vizhiyal manadhai thirudi vittai"... but "magnet" and "manadhai" have a "ma" start giving a slight rhyming there.
Similar is the case with the word olive oil in AP song - snehidane. "i viral idikuiil olive yennai poosi"... what is the tamil word for olive? even if there is a term, is it easily understood by everyone? If VM wanted to say "olive yennai", he communicated directly because most people understand the word "olive yennai", rather than the intricate tamil-word for the same. Some such words become necessary so that the intended meaning is exactly communicated more effectively with the usage of that word.

chandy,
cannot agree. look at the lyrics in mouna raagam.
'thaamarai mele neer thuli pol
thalaivanum thalaiviyum vaazhvathenna'
simple, no fancy tamil words, and any chap can understand this. in fact all mani rathnam's films in the past had decent lyrics. even roja had decent lyrics. its only in the last 3 or 4 years we have this disturbing trend. if we ourselves start justifying the use of english words then there would be no one around to criticize when the lyrics degenerate to an intolerable level.
if vairamuthu could not have thought any rhyming word for olive oil he could have come up with a totally different substance;) the same vairamuthu was able to give lyrics in pure tamil in the early 80s. And I cannot agree that songs with english words are the only ones that are appreciated these days.
eg. ennai thalaata varuvaalo - simple yet easily graspable lyrics and yet quiet sufficient for the situation.

this is English vairamuththu!

on: Thu Apr 13 17:21:52 EDT 2000
I have to agree with Vijay. Using English only creates a divide between the people urban/english educated and the tamil-reading rural folks. It is not a healthy sign. We dont want to give the impression that speaking/using English words is the only way to be cool. People should take pride in their creativity not necessarily in using a language. (I am not talking about vairamuthu here) . Unfortunately, in our country we have encouraged a mediocrity which knows english and loads of trivia but cannot contribute constructively to the economy.

While use of English words in thamizh poetry is by itself a debatable issue (I am mostly against it, except as a novelty occasionally), I wonder whether the lyricists even know the meaning or context for the normal usage of these 'English' words. Varamuththu's Srawberry kaNNEy, Vaali's "lightning kannangaL laser", "love phobia (when he wants to say mania)" are examples of the writer's ignorance.

Hi,
I got KK/AP CD on "BAR Digital Audio" (under licence from RAMIY). I was to get the SAREGAMA
version of this combination, but he said it doesn't have the last two songs of AP though it is list. The questions is about the quality of RAMIY/BAR audio CD's. Can a CD be of inferior quality (like audio tapes). I have almost always bought only Bhasky/PYRAMID and have a slight itch in buying RAMIY/KING/BAR/etc., CD's because my belief is that these CD's are of not good quality and also I beleive/know that these movies are not originally from RAMIY/KING/etc,. Can some please let me know will there by any difference in the CD qualities. Can I buy CD's from RAMIY/KING/BAR/etc., My Discman has a "Resume" feature where it resumes from where it stopped earlier (I think its provided you dont remove the CD from the Discman). This CD (KK/AP)
doesn't resume most of times and also sometimes all of a sudden stops playing. Hence the question.
Thanks in Advance for any help.
Enjoy your WEEKEND !!
Krishnan

CDs are made out of polycarbonate with a aluminum substrate. So the quality depends on the polycarbonate and substrate - sometimes the surace can get scratched easily and the substrate if made of impure metal could have errors , but usually the errors are taken care of by the CD player's error correction. So I dont think there should not be any difference in the CD if they are made from digital tapes (which is the case with all ARR and most of todays albums).
I suggest cleaning the CD with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth (like the one they sell for cleaning eye glasses/spectacles).
If it is a discman you can even clean the lens the same way. Be careful not to scratch it.
Very rarely, the pressing (or burning) itself causes errors.
