naaz: When SPB got the NA for door na jaa mujHsE (or was it thangaththaamarai magaLE?), it was the only song he sang in the entire movie.

I agree with GV - even I have seen/heard about the awards for singers given based on a particular song. I however do not favor that kind of a practice. For e.g., KJY was awarded the national award for his song "Aakasha deshana" in Meghasandesam in telugu. Any person who has listened to the songs in that movie would agree that it wasn't fair to give the award based on that song alone and then this was in the early 80s. Identifying the singer with the movie/composer is a healthier practice, IMO.

Kaumudi, rajaG -
Thanks for your responses. Things seem to have changed (as you suggest) since the time I was on film festival/award juries. Up until the mid-90s juries were instructed to view and evaluate a performance (acting / singing / original score/ direction) in "totality." However, that being said, there was great pressure from the "lobbyists" and many "gifts" offered to the members of the jury to "consider" such and such or so and so. I shall not name names, but these directives came from some heavyweights in the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and the Corporte/Music consortiums. There is a kernel of truth in what irfan alleges. It does - always does - happen. This is another reason why the National Awards in India have ceased to be a measure of quality/artistry exclusively. All sorts of other interests and agendas are involved. It would be naive to think otherwise.

I wish you could provide us some more "inside scoop" as to how the selection process for the awards goes, without naming names, of course:-)

Higher ups are just trying to keep ilaiyaraaja appeased..somehow the whole crowd is behind rahman but they know ilaiyaraaja is the Maestro
IRFAN:
without wanting to make a row, let me say that Ilayaraaja is hardly the person to be appeased by giving awards. he is far beyond these awards positively. He has achieved far more. I am sure we can all think a little bit about whom we are speaking, before making statements like these.

I am also not too sure about whether a NA is given for the performance in a FILM or for a single song. There are valid arguments both ways. I havent seen the trophy/certificate given to a singer for best singer award. But in many magazines I have read that a singer XYZ got an award for so and so SONG in this film. In almost all reviews I have read that Vani Jairam got NA for MANASA SANCHARARE in Shankarabharanam, for Ezhu Swarangalukkul in ABOORVA RAAGANGAL. But anyways...
1)Reasons why a singer should be given award for the performance in a film: Because one can judge his/her singing in totality and how it added to the film's value.
2)Reason why it should be given for an individual song:
A singer may not be lcuky enough to get to sing all the songs (or all the good songs) in a particular film. Such being the case, the singer's performance should be evaluated on the basis of an individual song itself. The basic unit of a singer's output is a song. In case of an actor/actress its a whole film.
Thirdly there have been instances when a singer has been given just one song in the whole film and has got a National Award. In such a case, one has to evaluate based on a song and not on the basis of how it affected the film. Eg: LM and Bhupinder got NA for Beeti Na bitayi Raina...LM's only song in the whole film Parichay. Even Chitra had just two songs in SB (am I right?) and she seems to have got it for PaadariyEn (I wouldnt call Naanoru sindhu a miraculous song). Another example is Suresh Waadkar getting it for his only song in Lekin (Surmayi Shaam).

Digression...
Now we have Sadhana sargam winning the award for the film 'UdhayaGeethavin Azhagi'! That's what every official government release has to say. :)
There's a trend started by BharatirAja I think, by adding his name to the movie's title (Eg. Bharatirajavin AlaigaL Oyvathillai, Bharatirajavin Mudhal MariyAthai, pArthipanin pudhiyapAdhai etc.). Perhaps to hog sole credit(!) And in most cases, it also usually connects to the name. Obviously one can't make much sense if the directors/producers of today's Tamil films decide to add their names as prefix to titles like Red, Citizen and Youth!

DInt Unnikrishnan win his NA for "Ennavale" from Kathalan and "Uyirum Neeye" from Pavithra?
I remember a particular Filmfare awards where all the 5 nominations for best Female Playback were Alka Yagnik.
funny thing was she had to share the award with Ila Arun(I think).
