hmm..this is not necessarily a different thread !!! I should have known :) thanks for the information on Bombay Dreams ..I listened to Shakalaka baby on the website and it seems to be more 'indian' than the original version..!!
Coming back to 'fusion' AFAIK IR is not the first to do fusion..Indian film music was laid down on the foundations on fusion.. IR is just following it up (to understate it).
Granted poongkathavE thAzh thiravAi ..has a nice indian melody+wcm in the prelude and interlude. But, I would categorise most of IR's music and for that matter all film songs IR and pre-IR as a genre which can be classified as ICM+WCM fusion.IR has been doing various sorts of fusion in very many albums..depending on his mood and inspiration (from directors etc) !!
To give an example, listen to kodiyilE malligai poo in kadalOrak kavithaigal - it starts off with some keyboard like sound (?), bass guitar, electric guitar, tambourine, flute. The charanams start with bass guitar + tabla and later when the other singer joins, the string section plays in the background, by the time charanams end one can hear strings + bass + tabla along with the vocals. The overall feel of the song is 'folkish' and still if this is not fusion ? what is it ? Are songs like this a waste ?
