Movies that were mega hit, only becuase of excellent songs and music..! And not because of anything else..!

There are lot movies which were blockbusters just because of great songs and good music.

I think 'Karakaatakaaran', 'Chinnathambi' fits in to this category.

  sabesan, your statement is correct to a degree...totally hopeless movies cannot run based on music alone (ninaivellAm nithya is the quintessential example)..However, since the thread talks about `mega hits', then we need to include karagAttakkAran kind of movies to have benefitted by the songs / music. IMHO, MD is capable of turning a 25 day movie into a 100 day stuff & a 100 day movie a SJ stuff...(for e.g. compare the fate of SKV & pAyum P, both equally dumb films according to me)

  //Yaaro I think I know what ur trying to say, but ur list kind of weakens ur stand tat the directors do not need the MD//- I have said elsewhere these movies had hit songs.I was trying to point out to kuja that how wrong his statement was with reg to shankar,If ARR can take credit for hots of shankar,then he should be the one to take credits for these flops as well-which is a silly thing for me to say.I never meant it that way.

  NagaS - that's what i meant precisely.... to make u sit in ur chair for 2 or more hours - we need a good screenplay, good photography, good direction and good music.....
  
  eden - agreed Payum Puli was a dumb movie, but SakalaKalaValavan (SKV), i think had a somewhat good screenplay..... and well, MD turning a 25 day into a 100 day old movie, hmmm.... as i said may be the BGM and songs - i would agree..... but not just songs alone....
  
  WhyNot, Bombay, i think fared well, in all areas.....

  I think Minsara Kanavu ran only for its music... It was a rubbish movie with a pathetic screenplay.. nothing short of a documentary...

  One more Oldie from IR -- "Thenrale Ennai thodu". Even though it was a Sridhar's movie. It was horrible except for the 6 great songs.

  thiruda thiruda was ofcourse a flop movie..
  there was nothing to watch in the movie except the songs & their picturisation..

  Some corrections.
  
  Karakaatakkaaran ran not because of screenplay, nor because of music but because of the banana joke:-)
  
  Kathalan is one film were nothing other than the music worked in favour. The songs were very good (totally different for that time) and the picturization of the songs was impressive. There was nothing else in that film.
  
  Besides that, I have also heard that the only reason Naatupura paatu ran was because of the Otha roopa thaarean song and that Chinathai ran b/c of Naan erikarai mEl irunthu song.
  
  I agree to some extent that a movie such as Bombay was elevated b/c of songs. But I am not sure if Indian is worthy of much applause. Except for the issue taken, nothing else was remarkable, be it music, acting etc.

  anna... adutha padathula oru paatu paadiye nammala konnuttaarennaa BR... (kaadu pottakkaadu from Karuthamma..) adhula marubadi pesa aarambichittaarnu nenaikkaren...
  
  But one thing... ARR used BR just 'coz somone (including ARR) wanted to stop BR's imsai.. or to understand the greatness of MV who follows with his superb commanding voice in that song.
