irfan,
I am on vacation now and not browsing net frequently, I will try to write a review in one or two days anyway,
For people who listened to the songs, 'Paattu solli, paadach cholli' tune looks similar to 'Kuyiluk kuppam' song from En uyirth thozhan, Isn't it ?

Dear Deepak,
That was nice of you to point out the few negative things on IR which were in the article and condemning them strongly. In fact, I myself supporting your view fully. You have given wonderful explanations with appraopriate examples.
But for the fact that PAAMARAN, the author is acknowledging Raaja for many good's, I would have really been angry on Him. Anyway, we all must be happy that Raaja is the only person to have got such a praise from PAAMARAN, who could not be satisfied by MR, KB, BR, VM, etc, etc whom many consider to be superior to IR!
This itself proves that "Katraarai Katraare Kaamuruvar"!

What is the feeling that runs through you, if you hear a song the way you wanted it to be. That's exactly the feeling I get whe I heard 'paatu solli" from Azhagi for the first time. Those roaring violins in the first interlude, man hear it for yourself. Will write in detail once I finish listening to all the songs. A reminiscent of the early 90's.....true to every word indeed.

I really think, "Oliyile Therivadu" and "Paatu Solli", stand in mind. Others, we have to wait, to see it in movie.

Kiru,
:)). Kutti had only three songs, crisp and sweet. I think here it is a all together different film. I liked 3 songs very much in my first listening. I feel that IR's music cannot be judged or reviewed in one hearing. He does lots of complicated stuff in one song, which gets noticed by fans(like me) not immdly. Wud like to know ur detailed review/opinion about the songs.

Hope you got what I am trying to say here...Like many did not like Aandaan Adimai. But IMHO it is a good album, I like all the songs, and feel that it is a genius work.

Azhagi is yet another ordinary album from IR
nothing much to talk about.
But one can feel some old spark of great IR we knew in 80s in the song Pattu Solli. I guess
IR has reached his saturation may be he already experimented with music that is there to be experimented.
I know some of you may not like this statement but i am just trying to be honest.
Will we able to get that IR of 80s?
Well I dont think he can reach that peek again but I do yearn for those great songs from movies like 'Kovil Pura' or Rajaparvai or Ninavellam Nithya where each and every song is a novelty and path breaking.(Great chords,rthym,jazz,blues you name it.. he has done it all) :(
inverted 'U' curve is the natural path of every muscian i guess they reach their peak and then down

I was little bit disappointed when I listened to the album first time but second time seemed good. Definitely the Raaja I expected is not in this album. I was expecting something similar in the line of 'dEvar magan'. May be the songs will go well in the movie. I hate to say this even for IR's music. Hmmm :(

After listening to all the songs of Azhagi, 2 songs stand out,
* Paattu Solli Paada Solli
* Oru Sundari Vandhalam
The rest are just OK. IR has tried to trace back in time to the 90's and provide the songs with that chronological style. "Paattu Solli Paada Solli" esp., had splendid violin interludes. But my personal favorite of the album is "Oru Sundari Vandhalam". The rest are just OK ones.
This album might not impress the "mass" today because,
* It has no stealthy bass sounds
* It has no abrupt Tamizh kolais (sans Sadhanan Sargams few mispronunciations)
* No mukaal munangal
* No heavy beat patterns
Also I have seen people saying they wish to hear the IR of the 80's, he has run out of ideas blah blah. But these ones I believe are under a false pretense of attacking him and just to prove a stupid point, "I hate IR and he's nothing". Well the irony of the situation is, I sometimes feel the present day's Tamizh film music has literally gone to the dogs and some radical change is needed. I don't know who is going to do that. But one thing is sure. The composers of today CANNOT do it and will instigate more blind followers to the current day style.

Lovely album Azhagi. Has IR's touch all over it. However, I am disappointed with the IR's choice of singers as I always am. PAttu colli would have sounded a lot better with Swarnalatha/Uma Ramanan/Sunantha. damakku damakku would have been better with Harini/Sujatha. As usual Sadhana, Bhava and Subha have done their part in killing nice tunes.

So, is this the intelligent perception of musical "connossieurs" of how the "Mass" is today?
I think of things this way, b'cos this gives me a assurance that my music taste and music buying habits cannot be matched by retarded "mass".
Since we are talking about taste, when it comes to movies my fav. genre(kind of movie) is feel-good retarded movies.
All IMO.
