  A R Rahman's two films had good songs, Bombay and Roja. But after that, which of his songs has been different? Nobody shouts Vande mataram like he did. And he got Rs 20 million for that! I had sung Vande Mataram which had music by Pannalal Ghosh. It was so soft and nice. After listening to Rahman's version, my wife said it proved that we are going back to the jungle days.

  Hi,
  
  Please don't be swayed by what Manna Dey says. these old time Hindi artists. Manna Dey, Lata and the rest of the crowd -- though were great in their days have always constantly critized the changing times. Sure HFM is dead after the Burman Days. But I am sure these people would lament that Indian music is down.
  
  Hardly they see the rise and excellence of music in Tamil films (atleast the pre-Deva days).
  
  I am no fan of ARR, but still once should discard these old timers, who cry loud to any music other than their own times.

  MDs and directors give money to Sun TV to telecast their movie songs among the top 10..
  
  ARR is a simple man,a man who knows for himself how nice his music is - and so do we...his fans!

  read with interest padaiyappa song reviews.though not typically ARR they synced with the movie.why the furore over nithyashree shrieking' it was just like ramya.for minsaara kanna ARR used only srinivas for the entire song with sriram doing only the jathi in the end.sriram is an accomplished carnatic musician in the cutchery scene too and is well- versed in mridangam too.can imagine srinivas or hariharan doing that jathi.or can u imagine sriram singing minsaara.what s more interesting is hariharan initially sang minsaara kanna but arr and rajni preferred srinivas rendition for its feel and also suited the movie.one shd give arr credit for introducing fresh talents and prefer them over established ones when they cant deliver.

  Listened to Arr's Sanagaman.
  
  What an outstanding album! The ablum has some lovely folk/classical numbers, fantastic interludes and to top it all a wide range of Indian percussions! A top contender for all awards of the year.

  Listened to two recent albums of ARR.
  Taal - Impressive. Two songs are wonderful.
  ishq bina & nahin tum saamne. good renditions.
  
  Kaadhalar Dinam - Not worth it.
  Also, start of "Roja Roja" by Unni
  sounds too much like
  kodutha sandhahiyil(?)
  en manadhai nee ariya
  nnan uraithaen
  from middle of chippi irukkudhu muthu irukkudhu
  song from Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu.
  Also, Unni lose the affected female voice
  sounds downright awful.

  Ishq Bina - very nice song.
  
  The Western Version of "Taal se Taal Mila" is also very complex and needs to be listened to more than one to fully comprehend it.
  
  Ramta Jogi - very well sung by Sukvindar singh....brings out the emotions very well.
  
  "Kariye Na" is an amazing folk tune....sounds like some fisherman song...ARR is ever so full of ideas.
  
  All the interludes are creative and melodious.

  sangamam songs are also available at mail-bag.com, tamilworld.com . The pick of the album(IMO) is mArgazhi thingaL by SJ and UK. All songs seem to have a strong base in rhythm which usually is a captivating element of ARR compositions. So what? the interludes dwindle in richness with percussion beat leading as forefront in the melody and the instruments intercalated. So is kadri gopal saxophone in the song SowkiyamA kaNNE sowkiyamA, but is quite invigorating! Shankar Mahadevan has displayed his 'qawwali ' nuances with modest classical hindusthani touches in varAga nathikkarai Oram. There is hardly room for synergy of instruments (instrumentalists) in these type of compositions, so the quest for harmonical music continues. (The last song with WC pieces i heared was thoonda thoonda maNi viLakkE from 'kaLLazhagar';-))))

  I was listening to Kaadhalar Dinam yesterday.
  Was very disappointed with the score. Most were Dandiya beats and sounded monotonous. I expected a lot from the Kaadhal Desam team...
  
  Roja Roja sounds so much like 2 numbers:
  One: Varumayin Niram Sigappu Song (Sippi Irukkudu, as you pointed out)
  Two: Ennai Vittaal Yaarumillai,
  KaNmaNiye Un Kaiyanaikka
  
  
  As for Taal, IMO, the best song is the folkish, "KARIYE NAA".
  A couple of numbers sounded like rehashes of 'Chaiyya Chaiyya'.
  Overall, a decent album. There are no WOW numbers, though I liked the sound. May be the songs would take some time to grow on you.
  
  IMO, he has yet to better Dil Se.
  
  Talking of Kaadhalar Dinam, the songs had Vairamuthu at his vintage best, repeating some of Alaigal Oyvathillai type lyrics:
  Vervai, Devi etc.

  neels, a song in kaadhalar dhinam goes like "kadalukku fishing nettu, kaadhalukku internetttu". i wouldn't say VM was at his vintage best:-)) (or was it vaali?)
